Luke Shaw: Promising left-back

Although the summer transfer window is officially closed that doesn’t stop clubs working hard behind the scenes to prepare for future signings, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest gossip. Today, Luke Shaw is open to a move to Chelsea and Manchester United while Tottenham are linked with a move for Yann Sommer.

Chelsea & United keen on Shaw

First up and the Express are claiming that Southampton full-back Luke Shaw is open to a move to Chelsea or Manchester United but they may be made to wait for his signature.

The defender has emerged as one of the most exciting youngsters in the country after breaking in to the Saints first team last season, with his impressive form seeing him earn his first caps for the England under-21’s.

Chelsea and Man Utd were strongly linked with the 18-year-old in the summer with Jose Mourinho and David Moyes looking for long-term replacements for Ashley Cole and Patrice Evra, but Shaw elected to stay on the South Coast and signed a new contract tying him to the club for another five years.

However, that doesn’t appear to have put off the Premier League big guns from pursuing his signature and the Express carry quotes from an apparent source who claims that while Shaw would love to play for his boyhood Chelsea team and is also flattered by United’s interest, he is in no hurry to switch clubs just yet.

“Luke’s a huge Chelsea fan and he’d be delighted to play for them.”

“United’s interest is flattering but he knows he doesn’t have to rush anywhere just yet.” the source told the Express.

There’s little doubt Shaw is a huge talent and deserves to be playing at the top level, but with Southampton flying high after a stunning start to the season it’s no wonder the youngster isn’t in a hurry to leave any time soon.

Spurs eye Sommer

Next up and the Daily Star are reporting that Tottenham have joined Newcastle United in showing an interest in FC Basel goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

The Swiss international is in the final year of his contract with the Swiss champions and has so far refused to sign an extension leading to suggestions he could be set for a move when the window re-opens in January with the Star suggesting he could be available for just £3.5m.

The newspaper claims Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has had Sommer scouted extensively this season after identifying him as a potential replacement for 42-year-old Brad Friedel, and may make a move this winter.

Sommer has already been capped by Switzerland four times and has attracted interest from the likes of Newcastle, but it appears AVB could now provide serious competition for the 24-year-old’s signature.

It amazes me that so called football ‘journalists’ and blog writers continue to peddle this nonsense about Luke Shaw. Its a combination of ignorance and pure laziness that keeps rubbish stories like this appearing every couple of weeks. Southampton are NOT a selling club and if you bother to take note of their current form and league position (where are Utd by the way?) it’s clear that the days of the so called ‘big’ clubs (small font deliberate) are numbered. Shaw bought into a long term plan and a football philosophy at Southampton underlined by the signing of a five year deal a few months ago. And in closing, you want us to believe something has any truth to it because you read it from a ‘source’ in the Daily Express? Really? I laughed so hard a bit of wee came out.

I have it from a reliable “source” that Mourinho is so keen on Shaw that he is willing to offer Juan Mata plus £12m just to be offered first refusal next summer. Not to be outdone, the rather desperate Moyes has spoken to the board about an offer of £18m plus Van Persie, whilst allowing the player to be loaned back until Evra has a final hissy fit and departs Old Trafford for good.

See, I can post unsubstantiated rubbish as well.

And by the way, it is one thing saying that Chelsea and Man Utd are keen on Shaw, but did you notice that your headline has that flipped round, which is very poor journalism designed to get clicks. Shaw has stated that he wants to remain at Southampton to continue his development, and given the growing reputation of the academy and the first team coaching, and the ambition of the club and chairman, then who could blame him.

Agreed Sean, absolute rubbish journalism. The collective weakness of large sections of the press means that thinks are taken out of context and Chinese whispers are allowed to build. Someone should be sued so this causes real commercial harm to club sand players, to say nothing of unwarranted concern amongst spectators.

Luke signed a five year contract with Saints this summer, a team that is giving him regular first team football, is playing fantastic football and is enabling him to have plenty of exposure to help his England prospects. Why on earth would he want a move to Chelsea or Man Utd.
