Arsenal and Manchester United will have to fend off competition from Barcelona if they want to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, according to the Express.

The German international has less than 18 months left to run on his current contract and is yet to reach an agreement over an extension leading to speculation he could be on the move.

Arsenal and United were both heavily linked with the 23-year-old in the summer and are understood to be keeping a close eye on his situation. However, the Premier League duo now face stiff competition from Spain with the Express claiming that Barcelona have entered the chase for the players signature.

The newspaper suggests that Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta travelled to Germany earlier this week to hold initial talks over a potential move for Gundogan, with the La Liga champions viewing him as a direct replacement for the ageing Xavi.

Dortmund are understandably keen to hold on to the midfielder but may be forced to cash in if he doesn’t sign a new deal before the summer and the report says the German’s value him at around £25m.

Gundogan has emerged as one of the most complete midfielders in Europe over the last couple of years with his impressive displays helping guide Dortmund to the Champions League final last year.

It would certainly be a coup if either Arsenal or United could lure him to England but it seems they’ll have to see-off competition from the Catalans in order to do so.
