Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has drawn-up a four-man striker short-list of potential targets ahead of the January transfer window with Karim Benzema, Edin Dzeko, Fernando Llorente and Javier Hernández all under consideration, according to the Telegraph.

The Gunners are in desperate need of striking reinforcements with Olivier Giroud the only viable option up front. The Frenchman has been forced to start every single game so far this season due to the lack of alternatives, with only Nicklas Bendtner offering any sort of competition.

Giroud has become so indispensable, it’s being reported that the Arsenal coaching staff have devised a special training programme just for him to protect the 27-year-old from possible injury or burn-out.

This over-reliance on Giroud has lead to boss Arsene Wenger looking at potential targets for the up-coming January transfer window and the Telegraph claim that Benzema, Dzeko, Hernandez and Llorente will all be monitored over the coming weeks with the Frenchman looking to make a ‘major signing’.

The main problem Wenger faces is the availability of quality players mid-season is likely to be limited, with none of the quartets’ current clubs likely to welcome interest this winter.

Dzeko and Hernandez are both struggling to get first team football at United and City and may be open to the idea of moving to the Emirates, but it’s highly unlikely either Manchester club would agree to sell one of their players to Arsenal and strengthen a title rival.

Llorente got off to a difficult start in Italy but seems to have found his feet in recent weeks and has stated recently that he’s settled at Juve, so that just leaves Benzema. The Frenchman is possibly the highest profile name on the list but is also potentially the most viable option.

He’s found life difficult at Real Madrid this season and has been targetted for abuse by his own fans, and with just 18 months left to run on his contract, the Telegraph suggest that Madrid might be willing to sell if Arsenal are prepared to pay £30m….but only if they can secure a replacement first.

So while Arsenal might have ambitious plans about signing a ‘major’ striker in January, the likelihood is Wenger might end up being reliant on Real Madrid buying a new striker in order for him to get his hands on Benzema. Otherwise, he may be forced to look at less attractive targets or short term loan options to fill the void during the second half of the season.
