Sneijder, Man United target?

Chelsea and Manchester United are ready to go head-to-head over the signing of Holland playmaker Wesley Sneijder but could face competition from AC Milan, according to the Daily Star.

The 29-year-old is currently on the books at Galatasaray but has failed to reproduce the kind of form that saw him previously regarded as one of the best playmakers in the world.

Boss Roberto Mancini has been instructed by club officials to reduce the number of foreign players in the squad and to give more Turkish players a chance, and it seems Sneijder is being put forward as one of the high-earners that could be on the way out.

The Star claim that Chelsea and United are both keen on bringing the Dutchman to the Premier League this winter but they will now face stiff competition from AC Milan, who are also understood to be interested.

Sneijder spent a hugely successful four years with Milan’s rivals Inter – winning the treble in 2010 under Blues boss Jose Mourinho – and it seems Massimiliano Allegri is plotting to take the playmaker back to Italy and may be willing to use the out-of-favour Stephan El Shaarawy as bait.

However, the newspaper suggests that David Moyes is ready to renew his interest having failed to sign Sneijder in the summer while Mourinho is also ready to use his close relationship with the player to try and lure him to Stamford Bridge, so two of England’s biggest clubs are on course to battle it out for the playmakers signature this winter.
