Arsenal are sweating over the fitness of Jack Wilshere after the midfielder picked up yet another ankle injury while playing for England against Germany on Tuesday night, according to the Mirror.

The 21-year-old has been plagued by a series of ankle problems over the past two years and he’s been used carefully by boss Arsene Wenger this season with his ankles frequently flaring up after games.

Wilshere went into the international break still nursing an inflamed right ankle injury that had seen him fail to start any of Arsenal’s previous three games, and Wenger had asked Roy Hodgson to only play him in one of England’s two friendlies.

The youngster was expected to be completely rested for the Germany game having started against Chile on Friday so it would have come as something of a surprise for Wenger to see Wilshere brought on as a second-half substitute.

The bosses fears appear to have been realised with the Mirror one of several newspapers who are claiming that the midfielder has suffered yet another injury after taking a nasty kick to his ankle from German substitute Sidney Sam.

Arsenal medical staff will assess the injury over the next couple of days but Wilshere is now considered a doubt to face Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
