Liverpool have been dealt an injury blow ahead of this weekend’s Merseyside derby against Everton with the news that Jose Enrique is set to go under the knife to cure a long standing knee problem, according to reports.

The Spaniard has been suffering with the injury for much of the season and has been restricted to making just one start in Liverpool’s previous five games before the international break.

It seems he’s suffered another set back as ITV claim that the injury has now ruled Enrique out of Saturday’s crucial derby against Everton and the 27-year-old is set for a spell on the sidelines as he’s likely to need surgery to cure the problem once and for all.

On-loan French full-back Aly Cissokho has been filling in for the defender in recent games but has been anything but convincing so far during his time at Anfield, so Enrique’s absence will be a huge blow to Brendan Rodgers.

The Reds boss is set to take his squad to Goodison Park this weekend looking for a win that would send them top of the league ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Southampton later in the day.
