Manchester United retain hopes of luring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford at the end of the 2014 World Cup Finals after failing to land the Real Madrid superstar in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Ronaldo made his name at United between 2003 and 2009 before sealing a world record move to Real Madrid, where he’s established himself as one of the best players on the planet scoring a sensational 226 goals in just 217 games. However, his long-term future at the Bernabeu has been called into question on numerous occasions and predictably, a move back to Old Trafford has been suggested by the media.

The Mail claim that United chiefs were genuinely confident they could pull off the stunning coup last summer and even put funds aside to seal the deal after meeting the player and his representatives at a London casino, with Ronaldo understood to be the ‘big gift’ that Sir Alex Ferguson alluded to just before his departure.

But the pursuit ultimately failed for a number of reason – not least because of how long it took Madrid to tie up a deal to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham – and the 28-year-old ended up signing a new contract at Real.

However, despite the set back, it seems United still feel there is a chance they can re-sign the Portuguese attacker with the newspaper suggesting that Ronaldo only signed his new improved contract to ensure he was still regarded as the number one star at the club and setting up a deal to take him back to Manchester after next summers World Cup finals is understood to be firmly on the champions agenda.

United boss David Moyes fuelled speculation that the club may make a move for Ronaldo after admitting there is still hope he might one day play for the club again.

‘Everyone at Manchester United would tell you he (Ronaldo) is the best in the business. I have not been fortunate enough to work with him but there is still a hope some day it might be possible.’

Obviously the United fans would welcome Ronaldo back with open arms and he would be a sensational signing if the champions could somehow pull it off. He’s always spoken well of the club since he left and never seems to completely shut the door on a possible return, so you just never know. The big question would be how much United would have to pay, because it’s hard to make a case for saying his value hasn’t increased since he left in 2009.
