Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing Chelsea target Edinson Cavani, who is understood to be unsettled at Paris Saint-Germain just six months after joining the club, according to reports.

The Uruguayan hitman snubbed interest from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City to join to PSG from Napoli in the summer in a whopping £55m deal.

However, the Express claim the 26-year-old is already unhappy in France after being forced to play second fiddle to Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic and has asked his agents to find out what his options would be should he decide leave the Parc des Princes.

The newspaper states that Arsenal were the first club to respond and express their interest in signing the striker and are now ready to battle it out with the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid to land him in January.

While Cavani would no doubt be another stunning coup for the north Londoners following on from their summer signing of Mesut Ozil, could the Gunners realistically afford to sign him?

The report suggests that while Cavani is keen to move on, he is not prepared to drop his wages demands which currently stand at £7m-a-year AFTER TAX (approximately £135,000-a-week), and this could prove to be a huge stumbling block over any potential deal to take him to the Emirates.

The Arsenal hierarchy loosened the purse strings in the summer and money is available for Arsene Wenger to buy a big-money striker, but it’s unlikely they will be able to stretch their wage structure, and come up with a mammoth transfer fee, to land a player like Cavani.

If the former Napoli man demands a move this winter, it could therefore be left to Chelsea and Madrid to battle it out if Wenger decides he needs to look for a cheaper alternative as he tries to find a striker who can lighten the load on Olivier Giroud during the second half of the season.
