Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been dealt a double injury blow ahead of the clubs clash against Tottenham with Jordan Henderson set to join captain Steven Gerrard on the sidelines, according to the Mirror.

Skipper Gerrard was forced off early in the second half during Saturday’s 4-1 win over West Ham with a hamstring strain and scans have shown he’ll be out for up to six weeks.

If losing their influential talisman wasn’t bad enough, Gerrard’s potential replacement – Jordan Henderson – is also set for a spell on the sidelines after taking a nasty kick to his ankle from Hammers captain Kevin Nolan at the weekend.

The Mirror claim Henderson was wearing a protective boot at the clubs Melwood training base on Monday and is now set to miss Sunday’s huge clash with Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

The midfielder will have a scan to assess the full extent of the damage but more injury problems are the last thing Rodgers needs as Liverpool enter a crucial phase of the season that sees them take on Spurs, Chelsea and Manchester City over the next fortnight.

Henderson and Gerrard’s absence leaves Rodgers with just two senior fit central midfielders in Joe Allen and Lucas Leiva, and the Reds boss says it’s time for some of his players to step up.

“Lucas has been excellent for us and he has forced his way into the Brazil side, so he has that quality and experience to step up and take the responsibility.

“Joe looks like he did when he first came here with his movement, his body work and fluency on the ball and that’s what we need right now.

“We have a number of small players on the field but if we have the ball and the other team hasn’t, I think they struggle with it.

“We need that mobility and constant movement in the midfield to get on the ball and knit the game together.

“Steven is such an important player for us, but we have other players and dynamics in the team and they have to step up.” Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

Liverpool head to the Lane sitting in second position in the Premier League table but with sixth-place Tottenham just three points behind, things could look very different for the Merseysiders if they fail to cope without the likes of Gerrard and Henderson over the next few games.
