[Player Ratings] West Ham 1-3 Arsenal: Cazorla Magical But Walcott The Match-Winner

By on December 26, 2013

Theo Walcott

Arsenal came from behind to beat West Ham 3-1 at Upton Park thanks to goals from Theo Walcott (2) and Lukas Podolski. Here are Gooner Mac’s ratings from the game:

Szczesny 6/10

Was badly at fault for the Hammers goal as he spilled Noble’s shot straight to Cole. A rare mistake in what’s been a consistent season for him.

Sagna 6.5/10

Got forward regularly but delivery wasn’t always up to scratch. Kept hold of Jarvis after a difficult opening 20 minutes.

Mertesacker 7/10

Another steady performance from the big German. Kept Cole quiet, apart from his goal, and was an assured head at the back.

Vermaelen 7/10

Encouraging performance from the captain. Will be interesting to see if he’s dropped when Koscielny returns, which could be on Sunday against Newcastle.

Gibbs 7.5/10

Very good from the England left-back, particularly in the second half when he was bombing forward to help out in attack.

Arteta 7/10

Was partly at fault for the opener as his weak clearance fell to Noble, but otherwise was very good. Controlled the centre of the park.

Ramsey 6.5/10

Not at his best before going off with a thigh problem. The Gunners will hope it’s nothing serious but Wenger has already ruled him out of the next couple of games.

Cazorla 8/10

Excellent. A real attacking threat and was constantly finding space to cause havoc. His through-ball for Podolski was superb but the German saw his shot saved.

Walcott 8/10

Turned the game with a well taken brace. Arsenal really missed his goal threat while he was out. However, he will have been disappointed to lose possession in the build-up to West Ham’s goal and should also have scored in the first half but he sliced wide.

Ozil 7/10

Drifted in and out the game but when he saw the ball, he was excellent. Created countless chances for his team. He does look like he could do with a breather though.

Giroud 5/10

Very poor in front of goal. Missed three excellent chances to put Arsenal ahead in the first half but failed to even hit the target with any of them. He did set up the third goal but really needs to get back to his best in front of goal.

Subs:

Podolski 8/10 – What an impact. Set up Walcott’s second with a lovely cross and secured the three points with a superb strike.

Flamini 6/10 – Did little of note in his 10 minutes.

Bendtner 6/10 –  Almost grabbed a fourth goal but fired wide.

Look how good Cazorla is again when played as the central play maker. That is not wide left (or on the bench !)

I totally agree with you. I don’t know why Arsene keep playing him wide while playing Ramsey in the middle. Ramsey give the ball away to many times and is not as creative as carzola in midfield. I believe Ramsey’s injury could be a blessing in disguise for Arsenal as it forces Arsene to play carzola through the middle and Podolski wide. The team that played the last 30 minutes of yesterday’s match is our best 11 and should always start every match. Ramsey, Wilshere and the rest should se used as sub to come in when the rest are tired. It was a different game yesterday once Podolski came on the left and Cazorlas played through the middle. Let’s just hope Arsene have the gut to stick with that line up. He tend to favour some players too much. It is beyond me why Ramsey get the nod in the middle ahead of Cazorla. Cazorla is our best creative midfield player and should always start every match in that position.

your comment on ramsey ia very wrong ,his impact in most of our game has been effective and calculated. if not for age i prefee rosciky to both, his far creative with the ball than both jux lack playing accurate ahot but nis passes can’t be compare. This seaaon ramsey has been great

`Deadly’ Podolski should take up striker role ahead of the misfiring Giroud…

Good Judgement. But we still need a striker. Giroud is a supporting striker. I think he plays 8 for montepeler in france. Please help us appeal to Wenger to buy us a striker in the class of suarez, arguero diego coastal etc to help us win laurel.
