Chelsea have made their third major signing of the January transfer window after confirming on Chelseafc.com they have signed Kurt Zouma from Saint Etienne.

The French defender has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this month after admitting that he had held talks with Jose Moutinho about a potential switch to west London.

Reports on Thursday claimed a deal was on the verge of being completed after a fee had been agreed with Saint Etienne and now Chelsea have confirmed the signing on there official website on Friday afternoon.

The club revealed that the 19-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract and will remain on loan with the French club for the rest of the season before linking up with his new team mates in the summer. The Blues didn’t announce the exact fee, but widespread reports suggest they have paid €15m (£12.5m) for the powerful centre-back.

With John Terry out of contract at the end of the season it looks as though Mourinho has bought Zouma to be his long-term replacement. Even if the skipper does sign an extension, at 33 he’s coming to the end of his illustrious career and Chelsea will have to plan ahead for the future and Zouma is going to be an exciting addition.

The 6ft 2in centre-back has been hugely impressive at the back for both Saint Etienne and the French under-21 side and has been tipped to be a future star for the senior national team. However, his season has been disrupted after being hit with a 10-match ban for breaking an opponents leg with an x-rated tackle. He’s recently returned to the side after serving his ban and will now continue with Saint Etienne until the end of the season before moving to London on a permanent basis.

Zouma is Chelsea’s third signing following the arrivals of Nemanja Matic from Benfica and Mohamed Salah from FC Basel, but the club aren’t expected to do any further business during the closing hours of the window.
