Wenger Plans To ‘Spend Heavily’ On 3 World Class Players – Here Are His Targets

Arsene Wenger is gearing up for a summer transfer splurge with the Frenchman planning to spend heavily on three world class players at the end of the season.

The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Gooner Mac brings us news of Arsene Wenger’s big plans this summer.

It was a disappointing January transfer window for Arsenal with the club only managing to bring in an injured 31-year-old midfielder on loan who’s unlikely to play for at least a month.

However, it seems Arsene Wenger may have been saving his money for a summer splurge with the Daily Mail reporting today that the Frenchman is planning to spend heavily on three world class players at the end of the season.

The newspaper claims that with Wenger eyeing a new era of dominance, he wants to add a right-back, centre-midfielder and striker to his squad and has already got his vast network of scouts working over-time to draw-up a list of potential targets.

As well as making another concerted effort to land long-term target Julian Draxler, the Mail suggests that Wenger’s hit-list includes the likes of Jackson Martinez, Edin Dzeko, Mario Mandzukic, Diego Costa and Lukasz Piszczek, while he’ll also identify a new midfield target after seeing Yohan Cabaye join PSG last month.

Despite splashing out a record £42m on Mesut Ozil last summer, the clubs coffers are still looking extremely healthy and will be boosted further when the money from the new PUMA kit deal kicks in this summer, so there are certainly funds available for the manager to make substantial investments.

Draxler has largely been deployed on the left-wing by Schalke but if we do manage to sign him this summer it will be interesting to see where Wenger plays him, particularly if he also brings in a big name striker.

Of the four front-men mentioned by the Mail, my personal choice would be Diego Costa. He has a £32m buy-out clause in his contract – which is a bargain considering his form this season – but the problem will be the huge competition we’ll face for his signature.

Mandzukic is likely to leave Bayern Munich with Robert Lewandowski arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer so he could be an interesting option, while Jackson Martinez has been scoring goals for fun with Porto. Whether he’ll be able to transfer that form to the Premier League is another question though.

Dzeko obviously has the experience in England but I’m not convinced Manchester City would want to sell to us, especially if we push them all the way in the title race and even more so if we win it.

Piszczek is a name that’s been linked with a move to the Emirates in recent months as doubts continue to grow over the future of Bacary Sagna, and the Borussia Dortmund man would be an excellent replacement. I still hope that Sagna ends up signing an extension as he’s been superb this season, but it makes sense for Wenger to be looking at potential targets and Piszczek is one of the best full-backs around.

It looks like it’s going to be an exciting summer but we have a title-race to concentrate on for now, and it worth remembering that it will be far easier attracting players like Costa if we’re the defending Premier League champions!
