Man Utd target Edinson Cavani has opened the door to a potential switch to England this summer and confirmed Chelsea tried to sign him when he left Napoli for PSG in 2013, according to ESPN.

The Uruguayan hitman was one of the most sought-after players in the world when he decided to end his three-year stay in Naples last summer and the striker has confirmed that Chelsea were interested in bring him to London before he was convinced to make a £53m move to Paris Saint-Germain.

“Yes, Chelsea were interested but PSG showed a real confidence and a real determination to include me in their project,” Cavani is quoted as saying on Tuesday by the Mirror.

The 27-year-old has continued his excellent form in France, scoring 21 goals in 33 appearances so far to help guide Laurent Blanc’s men to the top of the Ligue 1 table as well as book a date with Chelsea in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

However, there have been rumours that Cavani is not entirely content with life at PSG with the player understood to be unhappy at having to play out of position to accommodate for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while he’s also believed to be disappointed with the standard of Ligue 1 football.

It’s led to speculation suggesting Chelsea will renew their interest at the end of the season while Manchester United are also keeping a check on the players situation ahead of a huge summer of rebuilding at Old Trafford, and Cavani has now opened the door to a potential move after confirming he plans to sit down with PSG officials in the summer to discuss his concerns at being played out of position.

When asked if would still be at PSG next season, Cavani told reporters:

“I have to give the best, regardless of the position. But no, it is not always easy, I’m good in Paris, but there are some things that I’ll have to talk to the club about.

“Certain things should be done differently. Today I defend a lot, I have another idea of what my role in the team should be.

“As an attacker I am used to finishing attacks and scoring and today I must perform other tasks. No, it is not easy, it’s true.

“I do not want to talk about sacrifice, because I am happy putting the effort in. But today I hold a more defensive role than before.

“I am more like a defender and it is more difficult because, when I arrived, I had other ideas.” Cavani is quoted as saying on Tuesday by ESPN.

The former Palermo striker then admitted his admiration for the Premier League but refused to be drawn on speculation suggesting his agent was in the UK last month to hold talks with interested parties. He continued:

“The Premier League? I like it,” he added. “Was my my agent in London in February? I do not know, honestly.”

Blues boss Jose Mourinho has already confirmed he’ll be in the market for a world class striker at the end of the season after publicly criticising his current crop of front-men on more than one occasion.

Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba have all failed to find the back of the net on a consistent basis this season and a player of Cavani’s quality would certainly improve their threat up front. The thought of the South American spearheading an attack ahead of Eden Hazard, Willian and Oscar is a mouth-watering prospect for Blues fans.

United have endured a difficult season and David Moyes will no doubt be looking to bring in some quality additions this summer to get the club back challenging for the title. However, it looks likely they will be finishing outside the top four this season so unless they can go on to win the competition this campaign, it looks as though they’ll be unable to offer Champions League football which could pose a problem for Cavani.

PSG would no doubt be reluctant sellers so it may need the player himself to push for a move for any deal to take place, but Chelsea and United will have to dig deep to persuade the big-spending French outfit to sell as Cavani wont come cheap.
