[Video Goals] Chelsea 1-2 Sunderland: Blues Title Hopes Rocked By Shock Loss

By on April 19, 2014

Chelsea handed Liverpool a huge title boost after slumping to a shock 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at Stamford Bridge this evening.

The Blues looked to be heading for a routine win when Samuel Eto’o poked home from close range in the 12th minute. However, Sunderland equalised soon after through Conner Wickham as he was on hand to score after Mark Schwarzer had spilled a long-range effort.

Chelsea pushed for the winner but were caught out when Cesar Azpilicueta’s slip allowed Jose Altidore to burst into the box before the defender was adjudged to have fouled him as he tried to make up for his mistake.

Fabio Borini scored the resulting spot kick to give the visitors the lead and they held off late pressure to secure a vital win and deal Chelsea’s title hopes a major blow. The west Londoners remain two points adrift of leaders Liverpool who take on Norwich tomorrow.
