Arsenal have joined North London rivals Tottenham in the race to sign £20m-rated Manchester United attacker Danny Welbeck, according to the Mirror.

Reports last week claimed that Welbeck could be looking for a way out of Old Trafford this summer after growing increasingly frustrated at his lack of regular action and having to play out wide on the left  when he is selected.

Despite the exit of David Moyes, the 23-year-old is understood to still harbour doubts about his chances of playing regularly in his favoured central striking role as he knows he’s likely to play second fiddle to Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and any other forward the club’s new boss may choose to buy this summer.

The Mirror suggest that Tottenham have made Welbeck one of their top targets for the summer but it looks like they’ll now have to battle-it-out with neighbours Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger understood to be a big admirer of the England international’s.

The Gunners boss is expected to be on the look-out for at least one striker this summer to compete with Olivier Giroud and the newspaper claims the Frenchman has Welbeck down as a serious option and has asked to be kept informed about his situation.

United are gearing up for a busy summer of rebuilding after a disastrous season so much will depend on whether Welbeck fits into their long-term plans. If the player is unsettled and won’t be considered as a first team regular, then the deposed champions may opt to cash-in now and use the money to strengthen the squad elsewhere.

Welbeck was born in Manchester and has come through the clubs youth system, so I’m sure it would be difficult for him to leave his boyhood team. However, with two years left on his contract and the possibility of him not being a first team regular looking likely, he might decide now is the best time to move on and make a fresh start elsewhere.

It appears he’s got two tempting options in North London but the report suggests Arsenal or Tottenham would have to pay in the region of £20m to persuade United to sell, which is a reasonable fee when you consider the experience Welbeck has at domestic, European and international level.
