Barcelona-Cesc-Fabregas

Barcelona are ready to sell Cesc Fabregas this summer and Arsenal could trigger a €29m buy-back clause to beat Manchester United to the unsettled midfielders signature, according to reports today.

Fabregas spent eight year in North London with Arsenal having joined them as a 16-year-old and made over 300 appearances for the first team before moving back to his boyhood club in a €35m deal in the summer of 2011.

However, his time back to the Nou Camp hasn’t quite gone according to plan and he’s now approaching a crossroads in his career as he enters the final two years of his contract. Although Cesc has been a regular in Tata Martino’s starting eleven this season, he’s regularly played out of his favoured position and has been left out for the majority of the key fixtures this campaign.

Fabregas – who turns 27 this weekend – has even been targetted for rough treatment by his own fans with sections of the Barca faithful jeering him off the pitch in recent months with the midfielder appearing to be some kind of scapegoat for the Catalans disappointing season.

The former European champions are expected to undergo a summer overhaul both in terms of the squad and the clubs management, and it seems there’s a real possibility Fabregas could be part of the cull.

Goal claim that Barca chiefs are now willing to sell the midfielder at the end of the season and the player himself is understood to be open to the idea of leaving his childhood team for the second time in his career, and a return to the Premier League could be on the cards.

Manchester United were strongly linked with a move for Fabregas last summer and reports in recent weeks have suggested the deposed champions will once again target the midfielder as part of their ambitious summer plans to get the club back challenging for honours again next season.

However, it looks like they will face stiff competition from former club Arsenal with the report suggesting that the Gunners have already explored the possibility of triggering a €29m buy-back clause that they inserted into the players contract when he was sold almost three years ago, and boss Arsene Wenger is believed to have spoken with his former skipper over the phone about a potential move back to the Emirates on several occasions.

The terms of the fixed buy-back clause also indicate that Barcelona have to inform Arsenal if another club makes an offer for Fabregas and give the north Londoners first refusal to activate their clause, which pretty much puts the Spanish international’s future in the hands of Arsene Wenger.

If Fabregas is made available and the Frenchman want’s to re-sign him, as long as the player agrees to the move, there is little a club like United could do to prevent the deal from going through. Fabregas has never hidden his love for Arsenal and it would be difficult to see him playing for another other club if he does decide to try his luck in England again.

It’s certainly an intriguing situation as I’m not sure Wenger could resist the opportunity to work with his former protege again, particularly if the Gunners could re-sign him for just €29m – which is a relative bargain for a player of Fabregas’ in today’s over-inflated market.

United would no doubt be disappointed to miss out again should Fabregas join Arsenal, but they are always going to be the underdogs when you consider the affiliation he has with Arsene Wenger and the Gunners, and when you throw in the fact they have a fixed buy-back clause, it looks likely the Spaniard will be heading to North London if he leaves Barca this summer.
