Rodgers Targets 5 Signings As Reds Boss Eyes Lallana + Rojo As Part Of £60m Spree

By on May 4, 2014

As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, news on Brendan Rodgers’ summer transfer plans.

Adam-Lallana

Brendan Rodgers is planning moves for Adam Lallana and Marcos Rojo as he eyes five new signings after being handed £60m to spend this summer, according to reports today.

The Merseysiders Premier League title hopes were rocked after they dropped to second in the table following Manchester City’s 3-2 win over Everton on Saturday night.

However, Champions League football is already guaranteed for next season and it seems boss Brendan Rodgers is already making plans for the summer to build a squad capable of coping with the extra demand being in Europe will bring.

It sounds like it could be a busy summer and Rodgers is confident he’ll be able to attract the top quality players to Anfield now they are able to offer Champions League football again. He said:

‘We had the experience last summer when players respected what we were developing at the club but wanted to play at the top level [the Champions League],’

‘I suspect this summer will be a totally different proposition.

‘Our style of football is recognised. We have a way of working and a way of playing that in particular top players want to play in, a creative attacking team that wins. Hopefully it prepares us for bringing in this calibre of player and sets us up to have a real crack at the competition.’

‘It’s absolutely right to say that the squad isn’t big enough. It needs to be improved. The owners recognise that as well. They have been great.

‘They have a strategic way of looking at it and my job is to manage that,’ said Rodgers. ‘They have entrusted me to put my football vision in place.’ Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail

The Daily Mail claim the Northern Irishman is looking to bring in at least five new signings after being handed £60m to spend by the club owners, and his key targets include Southampton duo Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw, as well as Yevhen Konoplyanka, Marcos Rojo and Steven Caulker.

Both Lallana and Shaw have enjoyed superb seasons at St Mary’s and the South Coast club are bracing themselves for interest in their star men, with Liverpool seemingly heading the queue for the pair. It’s going to take big money to persuade the Saints to sell and much of Liverpool’s £60m budget would be eaten up if they managed to strike a deal for the England international’s.

The Reds came close to signing Ukrainian winger Konoplyanka in January and it appears Rodgers will make another attempt to sign the Dnipro ace at the end of the season as he looks to strengthen his attacking options.

Steven Caulker would be an interesting signing and the fact that the Mail suggest Rodgers is looking at bringing in another centre-back must call into question the future of Daniel Agger, as the Dane is unlikely to want to stick around if he falls even further down the pecking order.

A new left-back is almost certainly going to be high on the agenda this summer and as well as Shaw, it seems Rodgers has his eye on Argentina international Marcos Rojo. The 24-year-old currently plays for Sporting Lisbon and is expected to be on the plane to Brazil with the Argentinean squad after a hugely impressive campaign.

So it looks like Liverpool are gearing up for a hectic summer as they prepare to test themselves in the Champions League again next year. There’s no doubt their squad isn’t big enough to cope with the extra rigor of European football so new additions are needed and it looks like Rodgers has already set out his targets and working on deals.

there are so many players that could do a great job, but if you offered these five up i would say yes right now. we could do a lot worse. obviously you could come up with another five different players including tello etc and i would be happy but i wouldnt complain if these were the genuine targets. plus we surely have to keep borini and suso, or at least i hope we do. even reina would be great still. i would question not getting an additional right back because johnson is lame and quite injury prone as well. unless mclaughlin is ready to step up who i personally like. kelly hasnt got it in him after his injuries. m’vila too is such a presence in midfield and im sure would be cheap given his managers comments before. ahhh now im just getting carried away.

I can see why LFC would scout all of these players, hence the speculation but when you’re discussing what the first team & the squad needs you have to put a GK, LB, CM & LW as the priorities! Those four acqusitions will take all of the implied £60m (& then some) if the quality of the player is of the correct standard to compete in the CL next season. Reina, Jones, Toure, Cotes, Cissokho, Moses, Aspas & Assaidi should all be shown the door while decisions need to be made on Kelly, Adorjan & Ngoo because we can’t have any dead weight on the wage bill from now on. That would give us another £10-15m minimum & clear the wage bill a bit for the new signings. Cardiff City GK Marshall would be great competition for Mig & wouldn’t be too expensive so i can see that happening but Caulker is a puzzling one because we have Wisdom, Ilori & Kelly to provide cover to Agger (must keep), Skrtel & Sakho so unless one is leaving with Toure or we plan on playing
3-5-2 next season i don’t really see the need!?! Shaw’s valuation is a real gripe for me & i hope we don’t pay anything like £20m to sign him! I’d much prefer Alberto Moreno who actually has goals, assists & international caps at all levels to his name but if he’s too expensive i’d take Rojo who has done more to justify his price tag than Shaw & can play at CB as well. Lallana is 25yrs old, scores/creates goals & is technically gifted but for me he still lacks a few key attributes that LFC NEED in a CM to adequately replace some of Gerrards lost attributes! Ivan Rakitic is the only CM i can see who is ready to undertake such a massive task RIGHT NOW & i would do all i could to sign him before the World Cup starts if i were in charge. If i wanted to sign a player of Lallana’s ilke, i’d go for Firmino or Cuadrado before him all day long but still, he is quality though! I like Konoplyanka but if that fails Iturbe would be brilliant or Andros Townsend might be worth a punt lol! Konoplyanka is vital imo & will finally give us two PROPER wingers for the first time in years as well as even more avenues of attack!! With our loanees returning & a few promotions from the U21’s added to those new signings there would be a real buzz about the place going into the new season with CL football back on the agenda. If we had any funds left over i’d like to see them spent on young talent of which there is plenty: Christian Tello, Seung Woo Lee, Ryan Gauld, Dele Alli, Will Hughes to name just a few! Maintaining our push to sign the best young talent & add to those we already have is vital to our progress over the next
15-20yrs & LFC must never lose sight of that. Big subject this lol!

I’d say Juan iturbe should be a Priority. Can play upfront and both wings! Watch some of his videos..!
And maybe Rakitic too. The biggest thing in Lanalla’s favour is that he’s English. Never heard of him last year. Also need a world class left back.
I’d rather have 3 top world class players than 5 or 6 unproven players with potential, from the £60 million (alleged!) I think how this money is spent will decide if we are back or not.
