€43m-Rated Attacker ‘Want’s To Follow’ Van Gaal To Man Utd

By on May 6, 2014

As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Thomas Muller is linked with Manchester United.

Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Muller is keen to follow soon-to-be Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal to Old Trafford this summer, according to reports today.

Muller played under van Gaal at Bayern between 2009 – 2011 and it was the Dutch coach who gave him his big chance, making him a first team regular in the 2009/10 season when Munich went on to win the Bundesliga title.

Muller chipped in with 13 goals in his 34 appearances that year and although he’s continued to be an important member of the German giants squad in recent seasons, he’s not always regarded as an automatic first choice under Pep Guardiola.

The Metro are citing reports from German publication Bild which claim that the 24-year-old is becoming increasingly frustrated with his role at the club and is keen to follow van Gaal to United once he’s officially installed as David Moyes permanent successor. That announcement is expected at some point this week with van Gaal taking over from Ryan Giggs after his World Cup commitments with Holland in Brazil.

The newspaper suggests that the Dutchman will be handed around £150m to spend on strengthening his squad this summer but he will have to be prepared to spend a large proportion of that if he wants to land Muller, with Bayern valuing the attacker at around €43m (£35m).

To be fair, that would represent good value in today’s market for a player of his obvious quality. Muller has played over 250 games for Bayern and has almost 50 caps for German under his belt, despite still being five months shy of his 25th birthday.

He’s able to play anywhere across the front-line as well us up front on his own so his versatility is sure to appeal to van Gaal and United, as he’d give them plenty of options in their new-look attack next season.

Widespread reports here in the UK also reported over the weekend that van Gaal wants to bring Muller with him to Old Trafford this summer, so it certainly looks like there could be something in this story, but whether Bayern will be prepared to sell is another question.

He’s certainly the caliber of player United should be targetting this summer as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for honours again next season, but in all honesty, I really don’t see Muller leaving Munich this summer – despite what the papers say.
