Diego-Costa-Atletico Madrid

Diego Costa’s proposed move to Chelsea this summer could be scuppered after Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone pleaded with the club’s hierarchy not to sell their star striker for another 12 months, according to reports today.

Costa has enjoyed a sensational season at the Vicente Calderon with his 36 goals helping the club to the top of the La Liga table and into the final of the Champions League, where they will now face bitter rivals Real Madrid in Lisbon after knocking out Chelsea in the semi’s.

The 25-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge and reports last month suggested the Blues came to an agreement with Atletico to buy the striker this summer for £35m during a meeting in a London hotel following the second leg of their Champions League clash, while the player has supposedly been offered a five-year deal worth around £150,000-a-week.

So it seemed like it was just a matter of time before Costa would be unveiled as a Chelsea player. However, the Mirror are now reporting that Simeone has met with club directors and asked them not to sell the striker this summer so he can carry on building his team for another 12 months.

Further talks are planned after the Champions League final later this month where Simeone plans to ask Costa to remain at the Vicente Calderon for another season with the promise that he will be allowed to leave next summer.

The newspaper suggests that Chelsea remain confident they will be able to get the deal over the line, despite Simeone’s determination to keep hold of Costa for another year, but it’s going to be interesting to see how this one develops.

Costa is likely to earn more money at Chelsea and he would form an exciting attack alongside the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian next year if he did make the move to Stamford Bridge, with Jose Mourinho making no secret of his desire to bring in a world class striker this summer.

However, Atletico have emerged as one of the best teams in Europe this season and are on course to completing a historic double, so it would be extremely difficult for any player to walk away if they do go on to win the La Liga and Champions League trophies this season.
