Manchester United appear to be closing in on the signing of Toni Kroos with reports today claiming they have agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for the talented midfielder.

United have been strongly linked with Kroos over the past 12 months and with the player set to enter the final year of his contract and no sign of an agreement being reach over an extension, it looks like Bayern are ready to cash-in rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.

The Express claim that after months of negotiations, ‘significant progress’ has been made this week and United have now agreed a deal in principal with the Bundesliga champions to sign Kroos this summer.

If the proposed transfer goes through, the 24-year-old would become United’s first major signing of what promises to be a busy summer at Old Trafford. New boss Louis van Gaal has a huge rebuilding job on his hands and ESPN suggest the Dutchman wants Kroos to be one of six major signings over the coming months.

Armed with a transfer budget of between £150m and £200m, depending on which newspaper you believe, it looks like van Gaal has set his sights on improving both the defence and midfield. A new left-back to replace Patrice Evra – who is set to leave the club when his contract expires – is going to be required and a deal for Southampton’s Luke Shaw is expected to be completed shortly.

With both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leaving the club, at least one commanding centre-back is needed while a pacey wide player could also be on the agenda, and reports suggest van Gaal is interested in Borussia Dortmund duo Mats Hummels and Marco Reus – although he could have his work cut out in trying to persuade the German outfit to sell two of their key men.

As well as Kroos, United are understood to be keen on bringing in another top class midfielder with Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas and Juventus ace Arturo Vidal believed to be among the key targets.

While United fans have just endured their worst season in over 20 years, it’s certainly gearing up to be an exciting summer and it would be a major statement of intent if they could pull off a significant coup and tie up a deal for Kroos. The German international is exactly the type of creative player United lacked in the middle of the park last season and he’d be an excellent addition if they can pull it off.

However, rebuilding the defence is likely to be van Gaal’s most difficult challenge as it’s not going to be easy to replace Vidic, Evra and Ferdinand all in one summer. The trio have been central figures at Old Trafford for years so the Dutchman is going to need to bring in experience as well as quality if he wants to sort out his back-line for next season.
