Tottenham Hotspur have made a move to try and beat North London rivals Arsenal to the signature of Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, according to reports today.

The Spanish youngster has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the past 12 months and the Gunners came close to securing a six-month loan deal back in January before Carlo Ancelotti pulled the plug at the last minute.

Reports last month claimed that Arsene Wenger had renewed his interest in Morata and had already opened talks with Madrid about a summer deal with the Frenchman understood to be keen on signing the 21-year-old as competition for Olivier Giroud next season.

However, it seems Arsenal are now going to have to fend off stiff competition from north London rivals Tottenham with the Metro citing reports coming out of Spain that claim Spurs have now made a €15m move of their own to try and lure Morata to White Hart Lane.

Tottenham are still without a manager as Daniel Levy continues to search for Tim Sherwood’s replacement, but it appears the clubs hierarchy have still decided to press ahead with their transfer business and Morata would offer a viable alternative to Emmanuel Adebayor if they were able to secure his signature.

But I’d still class Arsenal as the favourites given their long-standing interest in the player and Wenger is almost certain to bring in at least one front-man this summer after seeing his sides title challenge derailed by a lack of depth in the forward positions last season.

The main stumbling block likely to prevent any deal for either Arsenal or Tottenham will be whether Madrid will be willing to let the youngster go and the Express suggest that Ancelotti will only sanction his sale if a replacement is found, with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez understood to be high on his wish-list.
