Chelsea are ready to make a €25m move for highly-rated Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in a replacement for PSG-bound David Luiz, according to reports today.

Luiz looks set to make a big-money move to Ligue 1 within the next 48 hours with Paris Saint-Germain officials understood to have been in London over the weekend to tie-up a £40m deal after the Brazilian international completed a medial on Friday.

Reports claim the deal could eventually be wroth £50m if certain add-ons are triggered, such as PSG reaching the Champions League final, with the afro-haired defender set to sign a four-year deal with the option of a fifth year.

The 27-year-old’s exit will leave a void to be filled and while some reports suggest Jose Mourinho will use the money to bring in a powerful midfielder, the Express suggest the Blues boss will look to sign another centre-back and has supposedly identified Raphael Varane as his ideal target.

The Portuguese coach knows Varane well having signed him for Real Madrid from French outfit Lens back in 2011 and has previously labelled the 21-year-old as the ‘best young defender in the world‘.

Varane has struggled to force his way into Carlo Ancelotti’s first team on a regular basis this season, making just 14 La Liga appearances, and the newspaper claims Mourinho feels this might be his best opportunity to land the youngster and is ready to test Real’s resovle with a €25m (£25m) bid this summer.

Whether that will be enough to persuade the newly-crowned European champions to cash-in remains to be, but Chelsea may want to try and secure a deal quickly as Varane has been named in Didier Dechamp’s 23-man France squad and a star showing at the World Cup is only going to increase competition for his signature and drive his price up.

Varane would be a superb signing for the West Londoners, however, I personally can’t see Madrid agreeing to sell him unless they are offered a ridiculous fee, so Chelsea may need to dig a little deeper if they want to land the young defender.
