Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Chelsea target Luke Shaw after agreeing personal terms with the Southampton youngster, but the deal looks like it will end up costing in excess of £68m, according to reports today.

Shaw is expected to leave the Saints after another excellent season on the South Coast and his impressive form saw him edge out Chelsea’s Ashley Cole for a place in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for this summers World Cup finals in Brazil.

Both Manchester United and Chelsea have been strongly linked with a move for the 18-year-old in recent months but it appears the Red Devils are now the clear favourites for his signature with the Express claiming that they have lodged a £27m bid and agreed personal terms with the left-back.

The newspaper suggests United have offered a staggering £160,000-a-week over the course of a five-year deal, making the package worth over £41m, and it would make Shaw the highest paid defender in world football.

If true and Southampton accept their £27m offer, it means the entire deal would be worth in excess of £68m – which is a HUGE figure for such a young and inexperienced player – so it’s no wonder that Chelsea have refused to match what United are offering.

The report states that Shaw made clear his desire to leave at the end of last season but his proposed switch to Old Trafford will now have to be put on the back-burner as Southampton aren’t willing to let any more players leave until a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino is found.

Patrice Evra signed a new one-year contract last month so United aren’t in any immediate need of a new left-back, but with the Frenchman now 33 a long-term solution is required and Shaw could make the left-back role his own for the next 10 years.

The proposed fee of £27m sounds more than reasonable for a player of his quality and potential. However, wages of £160,000-a-week seem ridiculous for a teenager who has just two years experience in the Premier League. Shaw will be on nowhere near that figure at Southampton and I’m sure he would have accepted much less to move to Manchester United, so it looks like the deposed champions are paying through the nose to make sure they beat Chelsea to the players signature.
