Manchester United are set to table a €31m bid for Bastian Schweinsteiger after new boss Louis van Gaal made the Bayern Munich midfielder his number one transfer target this summer, according to reports today.

United are expected to be busy in the transfer market over the coming months after a disastrous season under David Moyes last year that saw the former champions finish a lowly seventh in the Premier League and miss out on European football for the first time in almost 20 years.

Midfield is certainly an area that van Gaal is likely to strengthen and the Independent claim the Dutch coach has identified Schweinsteiger as the player to revolutionize the engine room in his new-look side next season.

A year ago the idea of Schweinsteiger leaving Bayern would have been met with derision, but the 29-year-old’s status at the Allianz Arena has waned over the past 12 months.

It’s understood that Pep Guardiola has concerns the he slows down the play in the middle of the park too much for his high intensity system and the former Barcelona boss is now willing to sell at the right price.

The newspaper suggests that United are now ready to pounce and are willing to pay the €31m that will be required to persuade Bayern to cash-in. It’s also suggested that the player is open to a move to Old Trafford as he enjoys an excellent relationship with van Gaal following their time in Munich together.

It would be a sensational coup if United could pull it off, particularly when you consider the fact they will be unable to offer Schweinsteiger Champions League football for at least one season, and it would give United fans a huge boost following what’s been a rare low point in their recent history.

On the one hand, the proposed fee of €31m seems like excellent business for a player of Schweinsteiger ‘s ability and experience, but the money-men at United may also feel that it’s a risky move considering the midfielder will have very little sell-on value in a couple of years time when he’s the wrong side of 30.
