Cesc Fabregas has revealed the reason that Arsene Wenger opted against resigning him this summer and explained how Jose Mourinho convinced him to make the move to Chelsea.

The Spanish international completed a £27m switch to Stamford Bridge last Thursday after ending a disappointing three-year spell at Barcelona where he failed to establish himself as an integral part of the Catalans starting eleven following a move back ‘home’ from Arsenal in 2011.

The 27-year-old was often played out of position and his erratic displays led to criticism from pundits and even his own supporters. The decision was made to find a new club this summer and Fabregas has opened up for the first time about how his move to Chelsea came about.

The midfielder confirmed that he spoke with Arsene Wenger as Arsenal had a clause in place that meant they had first refusal to resign their former skipper, but the Frenchman decided against exercising that option as he felt it would be difficult to find a place for Fabregas alongside Mesut Ozil in the Gunners team.

With a move back to the Emirates now ruled out, Fabregas has explained that it was during a phonecall with Jose Mourinho that the Portuguese coach convinced him to move to Chelsea ahead of the ‘many’ offers he had from other Premier League teams.

“When I decided that my time at Barcelona had ended, I looked for the best option for me,” Fàbregas explained.

“Arsenal was the first option, for contractual reasons. There was a clause that gave them the right to decide. We spoke to Wenger and he said that the space was very well filled by Mesut Özil and it was hard to find a place for both of us in the team.”

“I wanted to go back to the Premier League and I had to think about what my options were then. I had many very good offers, the logical options.”

“I spoke to José Mourinho and he told me that he wanted me there. He convinced me very, very quickly. He told me what I wanted to hear; he won me over and convinced me. It was very quick. I am very happy, very satisfied and I think it will all go phenomenally well.” Fabregas is quoted as saying by the Guardian

While Arsenal do have a wealth of attacking midfield talent in their squad, there are some Gooners who still feel the club should have resigned Fabregas. Afterall, injuries to the likes of Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere arguably cost the club the title last season and Wenger was forced to sign Kim Kallstrom on loan in January due to the number of injuries they had in the midfield area. If the club suffer a similar number of injury problems next season, they might just regret not buying their former captain.

However, Arsenal’s loss is most certainly to Chelsea’s gain and the Blues have got themselves a world class midfielder who will add a whole new dimension to their attack. The supposed purchase price of £27m is also an excellent deal in today’s market for a player of his quality, so I’m sure Chelsea fans are over the moon that Mourinho was able to convince the midfielder to join the west Londoners over the other clubs that were in the running.
