Chelsea are set to renew their interest in Wayne Rooney and table a shock £40m bid for the Manchester United striker within days’, according to reports today.

I’m sure many of you will remember Rooney being strongly linked with a move to Chelsea last summer when Jose Mourinho made several attempts to lure the England forward to Stamford Bridge.

A move failed to materialise and in the end, Rooney was persuaded to sign a new five-and-a-half year contract with United in February and it appeared that he had committed the rest of his career to the Old Trafford club.

However, some interesting reports have emerged today suggesting that Mourinho hasn’t given up hope of landing Rooney with the Express citing reports coming out of Italy that claim the Blues are readying a sensational £40m bid.

The newspaper claims that Mourinho believes that new United boss Louis van Gaal isn’t a huge admirer of Rooney’s and may see him as a sale-able asset this summer as he looks to revamp a squad that finished way down in seventh position last season.

There has been much talk in the media that van Gaal sees Robin van Persie as his ‘main man’ next season as the pair enjoy a close working relationship and it’s been suggested this could lead to tension between the new boss and Rooney.

Therefore, as unlikely as a move seems on the surface, you just never know. If van Gaal feels Rooney is not going to play an integral role in his new-look side, the Dutchman may be prepared to cash-in and sell the 28-year-old, and it’s believed he will have the final say on all in-comings and out-goings this summer.

It looks like he’ll have a tempting bid on the table soon as the Express state that Chelsea will submit a formal £40m offer ‘within days’, although no deal is expected to be concluded before the end of the World Cup as Rooney is currently away with England while van Gaal doesn’t officially take over the reigns at Old Trafford until he’s fulfilled his duties with Holland.

With so many transfer rumours flying about these days it’s difficult to know what to believe, but this is certainly one of the more surprising rumours I’ve come across in recent weeks. Not just because it’s difficult to see Rooney leaving United, but also because it’s unlikely Chelsea are going to be in the market for another top class striker as they already have a deal in place to sign Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid and recently signed Cesc Fabregas, with the Spaniard expected to play in the ‘hole’ behind his Spanish team mate next season.

We’ll have to see how things develop over the coming days and weeks, and as surprised as I’d be to see Wayne Rooney end up at Chelsea this summer, i suppose stranger things have happened in football…..
