Chelsea have opened formal talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a potential €22.5m deal for reported Arsenal target Ezequiel Lavezzi, according to reports today.

The Blues have been linked with the Argentinean attacker in recent months with speculation suggesting that Lavezzi is open to a move away from Paris Saint-Germain as he’s growing increasingly frustrated at playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibahimovic and Edinson Cavani.

Reports last week claimed that Arsenal have also joined the chase for the 29-year-old as Arsene Wenger looks to bring in attacking reinforcements this summer after seeing his sides title challenge fall away towards the end of last season, and a lack of depth up front was cited as a decisive factor in their demise.

However, it appears the Gunners have some catching up to do as the Metro are citing reports coming out of France that claim Chelsea have made their move and opened formal talks with PSG on Friday over a €22.5m (£18m) deal for the Argentinean forward.

The newspaper states that the West Londoners will offer Lavezzi a bumper contract to make the switch to Stamford Bridge and it’s suggested that a deal will be helped by the fact the two clubs have built a strong relationship following the Ligue 1 champions £50m purchase of David Luiz.

Lavezzi is currently over in Brazil representing Argentina at the World Cup and as they’ve just booked their place in the knockout stages with a 1-0 win over Iran and looking like one of the favourites to go all the way, any potential deal will have to wait a few weeks before being completed.

This delay may give Arsenal the time to come in and challenge Chelsea for his signature, but it remains to be seen what PSG’s asking price is and whether either English club will be willing to meet it. However, if Arsenal or Chelsea could land Lavezzi they’d have pulled off something of a coup as he’s an excellent attacker who can play on the wings or through the middle, so he’d provide Wenger or Mourinho with plenty of options next season.
