Liverpool appear to have beaten Arsenal to the signing of Barcelona attacker Alexis Sanchez after former Reds defender Phil Thomson claimed a deal has already been agreed for him to move to Anfield, according to reports today.

Speculation in recent days has suggested that Sanchez want’s out of the Nou Camp due his frosty relationship with Lionel Messi while Barcelona are believed to be open to selling the attacker if their supposed €34m (£27) asking price is met as new boss Luis Enrique isn’t convinced he’s a vital part of his line-up next season.

The Telegraph reported this morning that Arsenal have made an enquiry for the 25-year-old after Arsene Wenger made him a key target, while Liverpool are also understood to have made their interest in the player clear – although their pursuit is believed to be complicated by Barcelona’s interest in striker Luis Suarez.

So judging by the newspapers, it looked as though it was going to be a straight battle between Arsenal and Liverpool to try and lure the Chilean attacker to the Premier League this summer.

However, according to former Anfield skipper Phil Thomson, Sanchez to Liverpool is already a ‘done deal’. Thomson was being interviewed by Irish radio station News Talk on Wednesday morning about the Luis Suarez situation following his ‘bite’ on Giorgio Chiellini, when he sensationally claimed that sources close to the club have told him that Sanchez was set to move to Merseyside.

‘What will happen to Luis Suarez in the future? Is he angling for a move? Who knows,’

‘Just yesterday I heard things from people, newspaper guys who are very close to the ground at Liverpool, saying that the Sanchez deal was actually done.’ Thomson is quoted as saying by the Metro

It’s certainly quite the claim from Thomson but it remains to be seen whether his sources are accurate or not. It would be something of a surprise if Barcelona had agreed any deal to sell the player while he was still impressing at the World Cup, as his price-tag is surely increasing by the day.

There is every chance that Liverpool officials may have agreed a deal in principal with the player through his agent, but that’s not to say other clubs might not have similar deals in place, and in such circumstances it would then come down to which club was able to agree a deal with Barcelona.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out and obviously it would be a sensational piece of business if Liverpool did end up signing Sanchez – particularly if Suarez wasn’t part of any potential deal.

However, I still think there will be a few twists and turns left yet and it wouldn’t surprise me if Sanchez actually ended up staying at the Nou Camp, as it still baffles why they would even want to sell him in the first place.
