The Alexis Sanchez transfer saga has taken another twist with widespread reports this evening claiming that Arsene Wenger is set to hold talks with the players agent after tabling an official bid to Barcelona.

Sanchez has emerged as one of the most sought-after players in the transfer market after Barcelona made it clear they were willing to cash-in this summer, and the clubs sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta admitted on Tuesday that there was plenty of interest being shown in the 25-year-old.

Arsenal and Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for the Chilean attacker in recent weeks and reports suggested that the Merseysiders are keen to include the player in any deal involving the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

The two clubs are understood to have held talks today but it appears Arsenal have thrown a spanner in the works with the Express one of several newspapers who are claiming this evening that the north Londoners have tabled a formal bid for Sanchez.

However, the exact amount of the Gunners offer remains open to debate. The Express believe it was €37.5m (£30m) – which they claim has met Barcelona’s asking price – whereas the Telegraph suggest the opening bid was just €27.5m (£22m) but feel they are prepared to go a lot higher.

While the bid amount is unclear, both newspapers agree that despite the interest from Liverpool, Sanchez favours a move to the Emirates and has no intention of being used as a make-weight in any deal for Suarez. Obviously this will be a blow to Liverpool and could potentially cause problems for the Catalans in their pursuit of the Uruguayan hitman, if the Merseysiders play hardball.

However, this won’t deter Arsene Wenger and the Frenchman is now expected to meet with Sanchez’s agent in Brazil to discuss personal terms and try and convince the player his future lies at the Emirates.

Arsenal desperately need to bring in another forward to compete with Olivier Giroud and while Sanchez has predominantly played out wide for both Udinese and more recently Barcelona, he is capable of playing through the middle and has just enjoyed an excellent World Cup for Chile playing as a central striker.

His versatility is sure to appeal to both Wenger and Rodgers, and with 21 goals and 15 assists to his name last season, he’d bring a major threat to any attack. It just remains to be seen which club he’ll be lining up for next season.

As of now, you’d have to put Arsenal in the driving seat but things can change quickly in football, so Liverpool shouldn’t be discounted just yet, while there’s sure to be some major clubs around Europe who could also enter the chase and prevent him coming to England altogether.
