Chelsea have made a late bid to try and hijack Real Madrid’s move for Toni Kroos after matching the Spaniard’s €25m offer and hope to lure the German midfielder with a €8m-per-season deal, according to reports today.

Kroos has just entered the final year of his contract at Bayern Munich and is expected to leave the Allianz Arena after failing to find an agreement over an extension, with the German giants adamant they wont match the midfielders wage demands.

Understandably, the 24-year-old’s availability has alerted a number of top clubs but widespread reports have claimed that Kroos will join Real Madrid after the World Cup after the Spaniard’s had a €25m (£19.9m) offer accepted earlier this week.

Kroos refused to be drawn on the speculation at Germany’s press conference yesterday ahead of tonight’s crucial World Cup quarter final with France, but it looks as though he could have a tough decision to make over his future as the Metro are citing reports coming out of Spain that suggest Chelsea have now matched Madrid’s €25m offer.

Assuming Bayern will also accept the Blues bid, the newspaper claims that Jose Mourinho will now try and tempt the midfielder to Stamford Bridge with the promise of an €8m-per-season deal that will also include lucrative bonuses, and will dwarf the €5m deal Real are believed to have offered.

While it will be difficult for him to reject the chance of moving to the Bernabeu, Kroos has previously admitted his desire to play in the Premier League, and with Chelsea also ready to offer a far superior contract, Mourinho will be quietly confident that he’ll be able to lure the German international to west London.

It would certainly be a major coup if they could pull it off and £19.9m for a player of Kroos’ ability would be a bargain in today’s market. However, it will be interesting to see how Mourinho fits him into his team next season if he does end up snubbing Madrid for Chelsea.

The club have recently signed Cesc Fabregas, so either the Spaniard or Kroos may have to be deployed in a deeper role alongside Nemanja Matic in order to accommodate both players. Either way, he would be an excellent addition to the team and make Chelsea’s squad even more formidable than it’s already looking following the additions of Fabregas and Costa.
