The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Man Utd beat Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool to a young duo.

Joao Filipe

Manchester United have beaten off competition from rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool to take highly-rated Benfica youngsters Joao Filipe and Joao Virginia on trial, according to reports.

The duo are considered to be two of Portugal’s most exciting young talents and have attracted interest from a whole host of top European clubs in recent months.

Understandably, Benfica are desperate to hang on to both players and have been trying hard to try and fend off interest and tie them down to new long-term deals.

Reports claim that Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, as well as Spanish giants Barcelona, have all been showing an interest in the teenagers and are keen on luring them away from Benfica this summer.

However, it looks like United have won the race with Sky Sports News claiming that both Filipe and Virginia have turned down the advances of other clubs to accept a trial at Old Trafford after an agreement was reached between the two clubs.

If the 15-year-old’s impress United coaches then they will be offered deals to move to Manchester on a permanent basis and link-up with the Red Devils youth academy.

New United boss Louis van Gaal has been busy splashing the cash on the likes of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw this summer but it appears the Dutchman also has his eye on improving the clubs youth set-up and the additions of winger Filipe and goalkeeper Virginia are major coup’s when you consider the competition they faced.

Obviously we’ll have to see how their trials go and they might not do enough to convince United chiefs they are good enough to earn a place at Old Trafford, but if they are half as good as they are reported to be then they’ll be snapped up by the former champions in no time.
