The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Tottenham could be set to scupper Man Utd’s move for Mats Hummels.

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to inadvertently scupper Manchester United’s move for Mats Hummels by refusing to sell Barcelona Jan Vertonghen, according to reports.

The Catalans are in the market for a new centre-back to replace Carles Puyol – who retired last season – and it’s understood new boss Luis Enrique has identified Vertonghen and Hummels as his two key targets.

New Manchester United manager boss Louis van Gaal is also desperate to bring in defensive reinforcements after losing both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer, and Hummels has been widely reported to be on the Dutchman’s radar with speculation earlier this week suggesting he was lining-up an opening £20m bid for the Borussia Dortmund ace.

However, it looks like the former champions are now set to face stiff competition for the German defender as the Express claim that Tottenham have ruled out selling Jan Vertonghen this summer, meaning Hummels has now become the Barcelona’s No.1 target.

Vertonghen enjoyed an excellent World Cup with Belgium and still has four years remaining on the six-year deal he signed when joining from Ajax in 2012, so Spurs are under to pressure to cash-in, despite the fact they aren’t able to offer him Champions League football this coming season.

So Tottenham’s decision to hang on to the Belgian ace will inadvertently hamper United’s chances of luring Hummels to Old Trafford this summer, as it’s going to be extremely difficult for the Red Devils to compete with Barca when you consider they too are unable to offer elite European competition for at least the next 12 months.

We’ll have to see how things progress from here but I’m sure van Gaal has other targets in mind in-case he can’t get his hands on Hummels this summer.
