Chelsea are ready to launch an audacious €75m bid for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba after learning the Serie A champions are lining-up a new contract offer, according to reports.

The Blues have been strongly linked with a move for Pogba this summer as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in replacements for Frank Lampard and David Luiz – who spent much of last season in midfield.

Cesc Fabregas has already arrived from Barcelona but the Spaniard is expected to be deployed in a more advanced position behind the striker, so Mourinho wants to sign a powerful box-to-box midfielder to partner Nemanja Matic and there aren’t many better than Pogba in Europe right now.

There have been suggestions that Juventus need to sell one of their star men this summer to balance the books and the Express claim that Chelsea are ready to test their resolve with a mammoth €75m (£60m) bid for the French international.

The newspaper suggests that Juve had planned to offer the 21-year-old a new lucrative contract but the Blues have been boosted following yesterday’s announcement that boss Antonio Conte has left his position after a clash with the Serie A champions board.

Pogba fuelled speculation of a potential move to Stamford Bridge after being spotted in London last week – although he claimed he was just visiting the capital on his holidays – while he was also caught signing himself for Chelsea on popular computer game Football Manager last month.

The former Manchester United midfielder has played a key role in helping Juventus to successive titles following his free transfer move to Italy two years ago. However, if these reports are accurate, then Juve chiefs are going to find it extremely difficult to turn down a €75m (£60m) offer from Chelsea.

That would represent a huge profit on a player in just 24 months and give the new boss – rumoured to be former Italy coach Massimiliano Allegri – a sizeable transfer kitty to reshape his squad with.

We’ll have to see how things develop over the coming days and weeks, but Pogba would be a sensational signing if Chelsea could pull it off and would surely make them the odds-on favourites to win the Premier League title next season.
