Chelsea have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of left-back Filipe Luis subject to the player agreeing personal terms.

The Blues have been in the market for a new left-back to replacement long-serving defender Ashley Cole – who joined Roma on a free transfer earlier this month – and Jose Mourinho identified Luis as his key target.

Speculation in recent weeks suggested the two clubs were struggling to agree terms over a deal with Atletico demanding the full value of the 28-year-old’s £20m buy-0ut clause, and Chelsea seemingly unwilling to go above £15m.

However, it appears a deal has finally been reached with Chelsea confirming the Brazilian international will move to Stamford Bridge subject to personal terms being agreed. A statement on Chelseafc.com read:

Chelsea Football Club can confirm an agreement has been reached with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Filipe Luis.

The move is subject to the 28-year-old left-back agreeing personal terms.

Luis is a hugely experienced left-back and was virtually ever-present last season as he played a key role in helping Atletico land the La Liga title and make it all the way to the final of the Champions League.

If and when personal terms are agreed, he’ll become Chelsea’s third major signing after Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa and will battle it out with Cesar Azpilicueta for a place in Mourinho’s starting eleven next season.
