[Photos] Chambers Poses In Arsenal Strip After Completing £12m Move

Arsenal have announced the signing of defender Calum Chambers from Southampton for an undisclosed fee with the youngster signing a long-term contract.

The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Gooner Mac brings us news on Arsenal’s latest signing.

Arsenal have announced the signing of defender Calum Chambers from Southampton for an undisclosed fee with the youngster signing a long-term contract.

News broke over the weekend that we were closing in on the 19-year-old’s signature after he completed a medical and agreed personal terms last Friday after the club had come to an agreement with Southampton.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger confirmed on Saturday night after our 1-0 loss to New York Red Bulls that the teenager was joining the club, and admitted he had taken a gamble buying a player who has only made 23 appearances for the Saints having broken into the first team set up last season.

The club have now announced the deal on Arsenal.com and although no official fee has been released, the Daily Mail claim we’ve paid around £12m.

After completing the move, Chambers told the clubs website he’s delighted to be joining Arsenal and he can’t wait to link-up with his new team mates.

“I am so happy to be signing for Arsenal. They are a team I have much admired for their playing style, and a team who have been one of the top sides in Europe for many years. I’m looking forward to joining up with my new team-mates today and beginning preparation for the season ahead.

“I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone at Southampton FC for everything they have done for me and for making this move possible.”

Chambers will now head to Austria with the rest of the squad for a four-day pre-season training camp and is expected to make his debut at the Emirates Cup when we take on Benfica on Saturday afternoon.

He becomes our fourth major signing following the arrivals of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina, and although he’s capable of playing in a variety of positions, he’s expected to act as back-up for Debuchy at right-back.

I think it’s an excellent addition as Chambers is one of the best young English talents in the Premier League and he’ll no doubt go on to become a first team regular in years to come. However, his arrival has cast doubt over the future of Carl Jenkinson and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him now head out on loan or make a permanent move away before the end of the summer.
