Liverpool and Manchester United are set to table formal bids for Marco Reus with Borussia Dortmund already planning for life without the €63m-rated attacker.

Liverpool and Manchester United are set to table formal bids for Marco Reus with Borussia Dortmund already planning for life without the €63m-rated attacker, according to reports.

Reus has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe after two excellent seasons at Borussia Dortmund, with the winger scoring 42 goals in 90 appearances following his move from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012.

The 25-year-old’s future has been thrown in doubt in recent days following reports that he’s turned down a contract extension offer from Dortmund, with the player supposedly reluctant to remove his £28m buy-out clause – which comes in to effect next summer.

Dortmund are desperate not to lose Reus for such a low fee – which is understandable given his true value in today’s market is significantly higher than his buy-out figure – and speculation suggests the Germans will look to sell this summer if he doesn’t commit his future to the club and remove the buy-out clause soon.

The uncertainty has led to serious interest from abroad and the Express claim that Liverpool and Man Utd are ready to test Dortmund’s resolve with formal bids and believe the Bundesliga outfit would be willing to cash-in if an offer in the region of €63m (£50m) was put on the table.

It remains to be seen if either club will meet that figure, but both have substantial funds at their disposal. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers still has plenty of money left in the bank following the sale of Luis Suarez, while United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward recently declared that the former champions have the financial clout to break the world transfer record if they wanted to.

The duo have also been handed a boost in their pursuit with the Express claiming that Dortmund are already planning for life without Reus after boss Jurgen Klopp targetted Roma’s Adem Ljajic as a potential replacement, with the 22-year-old Serbian understood to be unhappy with life in Serie A.

So it looks like if Reus refuses to sign his new deal, Dortmund agree a deal for Ljajic and either Liverpool or United meet the supposed £50m asking price, then the German international could be heading for England this summer, but there is still a long way to go before that happens.

Obviously Reus would be a sensational coup for either club and it would be great to see one of the best attackers in the world plying his trade in the Premier League. He is predominantly a winger but is capable of playing anywhere across the front line and can even play up front if needed, so he’d offer plenty of options to either Rodgers or van Gaal if he was to make a move.
