The summer transfer window is now well under way and managers are working hard to strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Chelsea will hold talks with Real Madrid about Raphael Varane.

Petr-Cech

Chelsea are set to enter talks with Real Madrid about possible deals for goalkeeper Petr Cech and defender Raphael Varane, according to reports.

Speculation over the future of long-serving keeper Petr Cech refuses to go away after highly-rated youngster Thibaut Courtois returned to Stamford Bridge this summer to stake his claim for the No.1 jersey.

The Belgian international has made it clear he’s not prepared to play second-fiddle to Cech after two hugely impressive seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid, and with his place now under serious threat, many to believe that the Czech stopper could be on the move.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested Real Madrid are keen to take him to the Bernabeu despite only recently signing Costa Rican No.1 Keylor Navas, and it looks like Chelsea are ready to use the Spaniard’s interest to try and finally land long-term target Varane.

The Express claim that Jose Mourinho is desperate to take the French international to West London and could use Cech as bait to try and secure a deal for the hugely talented centre-back.

Mourinho was in charge when Varane was signed by Madrid and he’s never hidden his admiration for the player, calling him the best defender in the world back in March.

“I think Varane is the best central defender in the world. He is still young, but I think he’s the best. Already, yes. I think he’s the best defender.” Mourinho said.

Judging by Jose’s comments, he’d jump at the chance of being reunited with the 21-year-old and the newspaper suggests that Chelsea will look to use Madrid’s interest in Cech as a springboard to open talks about a possible move for Varane.

The former Lens defender is reportedly unhappy with his contract at Madrid and with Carlo Ancelotti also favouring Pepe and Sergio Ramos in the center of his defence, the highly-rated youngster could be open to a switch to London.

It would certainly be a major coup if Chelsea could pull it off, and while Chelsea fans would be disappointed to see Cech go in the opposite direction, some form of swap deal could suit all parties and the Blues would arguably be a stronger unit with Varane in the squad rather than a world class back-up goalkeeper.
