Arsenal are trying to push through a sensational late deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, which could see Joel Campbell join Benfica, according to reports in Portugal.

Fans are calling for boss Arsene Wenger to dip into the transfer market during the final days of the transfer window with a striker now a top priority following the news that Olivier Giroud will be out for up to four months with a broken tibia.

Several names have been touted as targets in the media including Cavani, and Portuguese newspaper Record are reporting that Arsenal chiefs are pushing hard to try and secure a deal for the Uruguayan hitman.

It’s not known what kind of offer we are preparing but reports earlier this month suggested we were willing to part with £32m in cash plus throw Giroud in to the deal, making the entire package worth around £50m.

Obviously with Giroud now injured, we’ll have to put forward a straight cash offer and you’d expect it would take at least £45m-£50m to persuade PSG to cash-in at this late stage in the transfer window.

There were reports earlier in the summer that Cavani was open to leaving the Parc des Princes after voicing his concerns at having to play out wide instead of through the middle. Despite being deployed largely on the wing last season the 27-year-old still managed to score 25-goals in his debut year in France and clearly he’d be an excellent signing for us.

It’s going to be extremely difficult to get a deal agreed for Cavani but if we somehow manage to get it done, then Record claim that this will pave the way for Joel Campbell to join Benfica. The Portuguese outfit are understood to have tabled a formal offer for the Costa Rican forward but Wenger won’t sanction his sale unless he can secure another striker.

The boss has previously indicated that he wanted to keep hold of Campbell but it seems he’s now willing to sacrifice the youngster in order to make room for a more established player like Cavani, in light of the injury to Giroud.

It looks like it’s going to be an exciting last few days of the transfer window but hopefully we can get at least two deals over the line before the window slams shut on Monday night, with a striker and a defensive midfielder/centre-back the main areas of concern.
