Manchester United are eyeing a move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan as a potential alternative to Kevin Strootman, according to reports.

Boss Louis van Gaal is keen to add to his midfield options when the January transfer window opens and it’s understood that Strootman has long been the Dutchman’s top target.

However, Roma are understandably reluctant to sell the Holland international and it’s been reported by some media outlets that the Italians have slapped a £75m price-tag on the 24-yea-old’s head to warn off interest from United.

Juventus star Arturo Vidal has also been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford but despite speculation suggesting he’s in hot water after being seen out on the town the night before their clash with Roma, reports state that the Serie A champions have no intention to sell the Chilean this winter.

With two of his top targets seemingly unattainable, van Gaal is looking at alternatives and the Express claim that he is now eyeing a move for Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The German international has just returned to full fitness after almost a year on the sidelines with a back injury and he faces a battle to regain his first team place with Shinji Kagawa, Nuri Sahin and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all regulars in Jurgen Klopps side this season.

If he fails to work his way back into the starting eleven, the 23-year-old could be open to a move in January and it seems United could be ready to offer him a fresh start in England if he wants a new challenge.

Gundogan was one of the best all-round midfielders in Europe before his injury, so if he could regain that kind of form he would be an excellent addition for the Red Devils.

However, I personally think United would find it difficult to persuade Dortmund into selling in January if they do decide to make a formal move for the midfielder.
