Manchester United are eyeing a triple swoop in January that will set them back over €100m with Enzo Perez, Nicolas Gaintan and Kevin Strootman all on Louis van Gaal’s radar, according to reports.

van Gaal spent over £150m in the summer rebuilding the squad that he inherited from former boss David Moyes but it seems he’s ready to open the chequebook once again this winter.

The Daily Star claim that the Dutchman is ready to make a €65m (£51m) double bid for Benfica duo Perez and Gaintan with United understood to be ‘confident’ they can pull off the double deal when the January window opens.

Perez has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks with reports suggesting that van Gaal has had his scouts monitor the Argentinean midfielder on several occasions, so it looks like he’s ready to make his interest formal next month.

Gaitan is a player whose been linked with United in previous transfer windows and the Star seem to think the 20-time champions are ready to renew their interest in the 26-year-old playmaker this winter.

The third players understood to be on van Gaal’s wish-list is long-term target Kevin Strootman with the newspaper report suggesting that United are continuing to push for a deal worth in the region of €38m (£30m).

Roma have insisted that the Dutch international isn’t for sale but I’m sure they’d be tempted if United come forward with a sizeable bid as he’s seen his time in Rome plagued by injury so the Italians would get the chance to turn a quick profit having only paid PSV less than £15m 18 months ago.

However, I’d personally be hugely surprised if van Gaal spent over €100m on THREE new midfielders in January. They probably need one, two at a push if someone leaves, but three?! I just don’t see the need for it as Marouane Fellaini has started to find some form lately, Daley Blind is due back from injury soon, Ashley Young is back in favour, and Michael Carrick has been excellent since returning to fitness. Plus they already have the likes of Angel Di Maria, Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj.

So as exciting as these reports are for United fans to read, I wouldn’t be expecting Perez, Strootman and Gaintan to be heading to Old Trafford next month, irrespective of what the Daily Star are reporting.
