Written by Kush Sharma.

A little over a fortnight is all that remains for the premiership to cast its magic once again on the world of football and induce unparalleled excitement in a way only a league which is widely regarded to be the best and most popular in the world can.

And while the pre-season might satisfy the urges of only a few sections of fans around the world, it definitely is another matter as far as the new signings as well as the young developing players in a club are concerned.

Jack Wilshere, Jay Emmanuel Thomas, Wojciech Szczesny are few among the ones that would be fighting it out for a place in the first team, while Marouane Chamakh and Laurent Koscielny would want to give a hint or two of their potential prowess before the serious business gets underway.

And if one was to pass a judgment based on the first three pre-season games in a way that would resonate with the opinion of majority of Arsenal fans, it is the 18 year old wonder boy from Hertfordshire that has clearly stood out from the rest.

Jack Wilshere looks set to be on his way to up England’s fleeting share in Arsenal’s first team squad. The 18 year old had impressed in Arsenal’s 2009-2010 pre-season by putting in back to back emphatic displays against Athletico Madrid and Rangers in the Emirates Cup.

At that point, many had considered him good enough for the first team squad, but that was not to be and after impressing at Bolton on loan, Wilshere has once again gained appreciation by putting in dazzling performances against Barnet, SK Sturm Graz and SC Neusiedl 1919.

The question is not if but how much of first team action would he be a part of. Joe Cole heading to Anfield instead of The Emirates and Theo Walcott’s dwindling form are factors that would suit Wilshere perfectly. A mature and clever head, excellent control on the ball, unbelievable vision, trickery, ability to read the game well and creativity in the final third are some of the factors that Wilshere can bolster the Arsenal midfield with.

With Abou Diaby, Emmanuel Eboue, Tomas Rosicky all having had a fairly poor season in 2009-2010, as well as the horrific injury to Aaron Ramsey, Wilshere can be the answer to a more creative and attacking midfield, especially now since the prospect of Arsene Wenger signing an attacking midfielder looks grim.

Last Pre-season saw the 18 year old play on the wings and to good effect too. This time around Arsene Wenger has allotted him a central role which he taken with both hands and it seems to be his favored position too. Another asset is his physical endurance and stamina. It was not rare to find him making and controlling the play from the middle while also making great runs inside the opponent’s 18-yard box.

The argument against is obviously the lack of first team experience, and as the opponents get sterner during the remaining run-in of pre-season games, one may not expect him to control the midfield with an aura of complete dominance as he has done in the first three games.

The physicality factor might also come into play and against tougher oppositions this might prove to be a downside, as was seen in last year’s pre-season game against Valencia where Wilshere was brushed aside more than once and was not at ease throughout the half he played in.

So while it is certain that Jack Wilshere is bound to shine at the Emirates, one would gather a more accurate picture of when this would happen by analyzing his displays in the face of bigger oppositions, like AC Milan, whom Arsenal are set to meet this Saturday in the Emirates Cup .

Arsene Wenger is considered the master of nurturing exceptional talents and at a time when the harrowing prospect of going 6 years without a trophy is looming over the Emirates, Jack Wilshere might just be the ace up his sleeves.

What is your opinion? Do you think Jack Wilshere is ready for first team action?

Well – it’s a start! The SUN newspaper reported yesterday that Harry Redknapp was adopting an abused Russian donkey, in the hope of being able to care for him at the new animal sanctuary he is setting up near his home. It was noted that Harry has just as much love for animals as he has for football and is known as the ‘birdman’ when it comes to training sessions at White Hart Lane because he likes to throw pieces of bread on the field for the birds.

I reckon this new signing could play up front alongside Defoe.

Juventus midfielder Sebastian Giovinco would be keen on a move to Arsenal if the London club came calling, according to the Sun. The 5ft 5in schemer is desperate to leave Juve and his agent has made it clear his client would be interested in a move to the Emirates.

“I have heard of contact indirectly regarding Arsenal but I have not received direct contact from the club.

“If the interest of Arsenal is concrete, Giovinco would be interested because Arsenal are one of the top clubs in Europe,” said the player’s agent Luca Pasqualin.

“If I hear of something directly from Arsene Wenger or a representative from Arsenal we would put all our attention on to the situation.”

Giovinco, 23, was thought to be the next big-thing in Italian football but has struggled to live-up to the expectation in recent years and a move away from Turin seems inevitable as Pasqualin went on to say:

“We are waiting to see who is formally interested, because he will definitely be leaving Juventus this summer.

Here is a round-up of all the latest transfer news doing the rounds in today’s papers. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd and Tottenham all feature as they try and finalise their squads ahead of the new season.

Young Liverpool Move Collapses

Luke Young’s move from Aston Villa to Liverpool has collapsed, according to the Sun. A deal looked almost certain after the two clubs agreed a cut-price £2.5m fee, and the 31 year-old full-back remained in England as the Villa squad flew out to Portugal to continue their pre-season preparations. But Young and Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson couldn’t strike a deal and the transfer now looks dead.

Tottenham To Make £4m Bellamy Bid

The Daily Mail claims that Tottenham will table a £4m bid for Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy. Harry Redknapp is a known admirer of the Welshman’s and is keen to add to his strikeforce ahead of next season, and with Manchester City having to offload around 10 players to meet the new 25-man Premier League squad rules, wheeler-dealer Harry smells a bargain.

United Keen To Land Next Schmeichel

Manchester United are reportedly looking to strike a deal for goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard, according to Sky Sports News. Lindegaard currently plays for Norweigen side Aalesunds and has been in fine form, prompting some to name him the next Peter Schmeichal. The 26-year-old is expected to move on to bigger and better things soon and United are believed to see him as a long-term successor to Edwin Van der Sar.

Schwarzer Still Gunners No.1 Target

Fulham goalkeeper is still Arsenal’s main target, despite rumours the Gunners had turned their attention to other players. Several sources claim Arsene Wenger will make a move for Caliari’s Federico Marchetti, while others suggest a move for Ajax’s Maarten Stekelenburg could be on the cards. But the news today is that the Gunners still want to strike a deal for Schwarzer and are prepared to go as high as £3m to get their man.

Chelsea Close-In on Ramires

Chelsea are believed to be close to wrapping-up the signing of Benfica midfielder Ramires in a £17m deal, according to the Daily Star. Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is keen for the deal to be concluded before his squad fly out to Germany on Saturday as part of their pre-season tour and officials are doing all they can to make it happen.

So there is your latest dose of transfer rumours. Please take them all with a pinch of salt and remember it’s just speculation at this point!

The agent of German defender Sedar Tasci has said his client has huge respect for Arsenal amid rumours they have held talks with the player over a potential move to the Emirates.

The Sun claims that Arsenal have already spoken with the player and his club Stuttgard, but are yet to decide whether to make a formal bid. Tasci, 23, was linked with both Arsenal and Tottenham at the start of the summer, while Italian giants Juventus are also monitoring his situation.

Uli Ferber, Tasci’s agent, has told the Sun that the defender likes English football and hinted a move to Arsenal could be on the cards.

Ferber said in The Sun: “Serdar admires English football and has huge respect for Arsenal.”

Tasci is contracted with Stuttgard until 2014 and it’s believed he has an £18.5m buy-out clause but Arsenal are looking to do a deal closer to £10m for the player who can play at both right-back and centre-back.

Written by Basil James.

The search for the new number 1 at Arsenal took on a new turn when Wenger decided to shift his attention to Federico Marchetti a few days ago. Cagliari, the Serie A club who currently employs the Italian keeper, has put Marchetti on the transfer list after the goalkeeper put in a transfer request.

As anyone even mildly interested in European club football would be aware, Arsenal have been on the search for a new goalkeeper like a couple of bloodhounds, especially after last season when Manuel Almunia and Lukas Fabianski put in less than impressive performances. After announcing months ago that Arsenal would have a new face between the sticks, the English giants have been on the trail of many a keeper across Europe. After having a bid for Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer rejected, Arsenal have been busy scouting and some big names like Akinfeev and Stekelenburg have been floating around. But now all that can be put in the trash as Federico Marchetti looks set to become a Gunner.

Arsenal are reportedly planning to go with a £5.5 million bid for the goal keeper who played for Italy in the World Cup.

Apparently, Cagliari received a phone call from Arsenal inquiring about the shot stopper. After hearing about the interest from Arsenal, Marchetti was eager to apply for a transfer and his wish was granted. Marchetti was reportedly disgruntled after a prospective move to Sampdoria failed to take off and he made no secret of it. Caglairi feels Marchetti has no future at the club and is happy to let him go for an appropriate fee. Massino Cellino, the Cagliari president, was asked about Marchetti’s future and he said:

“Federico has expressed a desire to leave. The only club pushing for his signature is Arsenal and we will do everything to make him happy”.

The 27 year old goalkeeper did not play in Caglairi’s friendly match against Bastia and was heavily booed by Cagliari fans. They surely are not happy with Marchetti’s desire to leave the club. One club’s bad boy is another club’s new kid on the block.

The keeper who is 1.88 metres tall was adjudged the best guardian of goal in Serie B in 2007-08. At that time, he was employed by AlbinoLeffe. Cagliari signed him on loan in 2008-09 and made him a permanent feature in February of this year.

Federico Marchetti was Buffon’s deputy in the ill-fated Italian squad for the World Cup in South Africa. He came on as a substitute against Paraguay at the start of the second half and kept a clean sheet. He started in the game against Slovakia as Buffon was injured but could not put in a good show as Slovakia went on to shock Italy 3-2. Marchetti’s goalkeeping came under criticism after the loss, with many arguing that Buffon might have got his hands to the shots that shook the Italian net. An under par and slow defence did not help his cause either. Marchetti’s record of letting in four goals from six shots on target in two games after his World Cup debut does not show him in good light.

Marchetti could be a good addition to the Arsenal squad for the coming season. He has put in impressive performances in the Serie A and was praised far and wide by critics. His day was made when Gianluigi Buffon chose Marchetti as his favourite young Italian goalkeeper. However, his poor performances in the World Cup could indicate a lack of recognisable form in the young Italian keeper, meaning Arsenal would be back to square one if Marchetti cannot step straight in to the first team.

Marchetti seems to be the best goalkeeper available to Arsenal at the moment and it should not be too much trouble for Wenger to snap up the 27 year old player. However, whether his quality would be enough to bolster the squad which suffered heavily from goalkeeping errors in the past seasons is in doubt. His recent performances are not world class but if Wenger chooses to overlook that as a blip and rather concentrate on his league records, one could not blame him. After all, Arsenal are desperate for a top quality keeper and Wenger cannot be blamed for trying and testing anyone available.

Marchetti does seem to be on the cusp of joining Arsenal as both sides have agreed in principle and only the issue of price need to be sorted out. Most probably we might see Marchetti in the Arsenal jersey from August 15th. Only time will tell.

Do you think Federico Marchetti would be a good option for Arsenal?

Reports today suggest that defender Luke Young could be on his way to Anfield. The Reds have offered £2.75m for the former England full-back, a fee which has been accepted by Aston Villa. Martin O’Neill confirmed that there was interest in the 31-year-old and told Avfc.com :

There has been an offer from a football club, which Luke is mulling over and if it doesn’t materialize then he would also join us [in Portugal] because he needs to play some football soon.

Young, who become known as ‘Mr Consistent’ at previous club Middlesbrough, had an impressive first season at Villa and quickly became a fans’ favourite. In 2009, however, he only started in 14 league games after losing his favoured right-back position to Carlos Cuellar. His year was also greatly affected by the death of his 17-year-old brother Andre, last August.

Roy Hodgson has been impressed by the versatility of the former Charlton captain and tried to sign him earlier this year whilst manager of Fulham. Young is comfortable in both full-back positions and he can provide cover for Glen Johnson as well as taking over on the left. This is a position where Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements, following the sale of Emiliano Insua, and Fabio Aurelio’s exit on a free transfer.

Would you be happy to see Luke Young sign for Liverpool?

The transfer window this summer has been very quiet on the Tottenham front. The 21 year old Brazilian International midfielder Sandro was purchased towards the end of the 2009/2010 season, but since the campaign ended, so has Tottenham’s spending.

The question is, do Tottenham need to sign anyone? Some fans aren’t too worried if they don’t as they feel they have a good set of players in the squad already, but Harry Redknapp claims that he thinks an extra 3 signings would do the trick, with at least one of these being a ‘star player’ to help bolster Tottenham’s title credentials next season which Harry sees as a realistic target. A few star names have been linked to Tottenham over the summer, namely Joe Cole (opted to give up Champions League to join Liverpool), Diego Forlan, Fabiano and more recently Raul of Real Madrid.

Manchester City have spent big recently, and some feel as though Tottenham may be falling behind their rivals when it comes to buying star players. But maybe not signing too many players can be a good thing? Remember, foreign players sometimes take a while to gel in a new team, which is something that may hold Manchester City back. If Tottenham were to make minimal changes, this might not disrupt the team up too much and allow them to start the new season with the type of form they finished the last campaign with.

You get the feeling Tottenham are after someone with big Champions League experience and ambition, but the question is, do they need that someone? Or can this current team step it up to the next level week in week out? They proved it last season.

Arsenal are ready to launch a £10m bid to sign Germany defender Per Mertesacker, according to the Mirror. Arsene Wenger will make the move after Sol Campbell looks set to sign for Newcastle despite the Arsenal boss being confident he would agree the one-year deal being offered at the Emirates.

Missing out on Campbell has left Wenger short of centre-back options following the departures of Silvestre, Gallas and Senderos, leaving him just Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou (who picked up a knock yesterday) to choose from.

So at least one more centre-back is needed and the Mirror reports that the Frenchman has identified 25-year-old Mertesacker as his number one target after giving up on Everton’s Phil Jagielka after having a £14m bid rejected. Wenger has watched the Werder Bremen star several times and believes he can snap him up for £10m as he only has two years remaining on his current contract.

Arsene Wenger hopes chief executive Ivan Gazidis can secure a swift deal for Mertesacker, but has already named his back-up options in Ajax’s Jan Vertonghen and Dynamo Kiev’s Pape Diakhate should their bid for the German fail.

Personally, i would love to see Mertesacker at the Emirates. He is a giant at 6ft 6″ and at 25 is coming into the prime of his career. He is also vastly experienced and has shown he can do it at the top level. If he is available for anywhere near £10m, we should snap him up now.

Liverpool look set to sign Real Madrid’s £9m rated left back Royston Drenthe after the player claimed he will be playing for the Reds next season.

Roy Hodgson has made the left back position his priority after the £4.5m sale of Emiliano Insua to Fiorentina, along with the departures of Andrea Dossena and Fabio Aurelio, left him with no recognised left-back to choose from.

Now it seems Drenthe, who can also play as a left sided midfielder, will be the man to fill the void after claiming on his Facebook page that he will soon be joining Liverpool.

“I will soon be joining Liverpool FC. I hope I will have a good season, he said.

The 23-year-old former Dutch international has seen his playing time limited at Real Madrid following his move from Feyenoord three years ago, appearing in just 46 games and has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeau for some time.

***Since this article was published it became apparent that the Facebook was page in-fact NOT Drenthe’s personal page but a fansite page***

Although a deal is thought to be close, Benfica would like to discuss Chelsea including players as part-exchange. Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has seen his midfield options dwindle this summer after Joe Cole and Michael Ballack left the club, Deco is expected to return to Brazil shortly, while utility player Juliano Belletti has also been released. So far Yossi Benayoun has been the only addition so Ancelotti is keen to bolster his squad as soon as possible.

Brazil midfielder Ramires, 23, is versitile and competitive and should fit in well with the physical nature of the premier league. Benfica would like any deal finalised quickly so they have time to find a replacement.

Written by Basil James.

It is common knowledge that Manuel Almunia, or any of the other three goal keepers Arsenal have at the moment, will not be wearing the number 1 jersey in the coming season. Arsenal have been in the market for a shot stopper for quite some time now. Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer seemed to be the favourite to move to the Emirates, but the chances of the Socceroos goalie donning the Arsenal colours seem to be dwindling as I write. The new name on the horizon is that of the Dutch goal keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

Stekelenburg is rated at £ 4 million and would definitely be a good buy for Wenger. The Dutchman impressed in the World Cup, producing some fine stops and, though he did let in half a dozen goals, caught the eye for being a consistent keeper with good technique. Having won quite a few titles with Ajax in the Eredivisie, Stekelenburg certainly has the experience needed to play in a top flight team like Arsenal. He was named the Ajax “Player of the Year” in 2007-08 and has re-established himself as the number 1 for Ajax despite a season plagued by injuries and indifferent form.

Ajax’s financial troubles are well documented and they have accepted the fact that a few of their regualrs may be leaving the club in this transfer window. Maarten Stekelenburg is not exactly their top priority right now as the Dutch club tries to hang on to their star striker Luis Suarez and other impressive players such as Van der Wiel. At £ 4 million, Stekelenburg is a cut-price option for Wenger and a very good one at that.

The chief agents of the goal keeper have remained mum over the issue, probably in an attempt to increase the transfer value of the player. Reports suggest that Arsenal have, in fact, officially communicated their interest to Ajax, but the Dutch club is yet to respond as of writing. An Ajax insider reported that “I don’t think Luis Suarez will leave us this summer but as for the others, there’s a good chance one or two have to leave”. The insider went on to add that “I know there’s an English club interested in the goalkeeper, for sure”.

It is obvious that Arsenal badly need a quality goal keeper for the coming season if they are to win a title for the first time in six seasons. Almunia and Fabianski have been given opportunities but they have often performed short of expectations. The Mark Schwarzer saga has been dragging on for quite some time now and after a rejected offer, we may consider that chapter closed. Stekelenburg is only 27 years old, a whole ten years less than Schwarzer. he has played on the big stage, capped by a good World Cup. Maarten Stekelenburg could be the solution to Arsenal’s long standing goal keeping woes. I hope Arsene can snap him up without much ado.

A great club must have a great goal keeper and that is an argument even Sarah Palin would not refudiate.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has ruled out a move for Real Madrid great Raul. Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Redknapp played down links with the Spaniard after revealing that he has already identified the three players he wants to strengthen his squad.

Raul is expected to close the curtains on his illustrious career at the Bernabeu later this week and has been heavily linked with the North London Club. However, it seems more likely that the forward will join German outfit Schalke as opposed to making the move into the premier league.

Whilst hosing down speculation of a move for Raul, Redknapp once again spoke of his admiration for Brazilian Luis Fabiano. The Sevilla striker has been linked with a move to Spurs since the beginning of the summer.

In the interview Redknapp said:

“I Like Fabiano. I’ve got other targets, but I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t like him, he’s a top player. Raul is a great player at Real Madrid, but I wouldn’t think he would be a player we would bring to Tottenham. Financially, I don’t think it would be possible to do a deal like that.”

Tottenham are facing their first ever campaign in the Champions League and it is seen as imperative that Redknapp strengthens his squad before the Play-Offs at the end of August. Redknapp has already pinpointed the areas that he needs to improve if Tottenham are to challenge for the title as well as mount a successful Champions League campaign.

“We need three players and I know the three players we want. If we can get them I think we’ll be good next year. We’ve still got work to do. There are a couple of positions where we could just make ourselves that extra little bit better.”

Following Robbie Keane’s impressive performances in the pre-season friendlies, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp intends to include the Republic of Ireland international in his 25-man squad for this Premier League Season.

Keane was reported to quit Spurs this summer, given that last year he lost his place in the first team and was sent on loan to play for Glasgow Celtic. Both Fulham and Aston Villa have shown interest in the Republic of Ireland international this summer. However, according to manager Harry Redknapp, the Irishman’s career with Spurs might not be over.

In an interview given to The Telegraph, Redknapp said:

“His situation is that he is still a very good player. He looked sharp and bright here. He wants to play every game and if he keeps playing like that, there is no reason why he cannot. It was a fantastic finish. He is one of our better players. I cannot say for certain that he will stay, because who knows what can happen in football, but at the moment I see him as part of our team. There is every chance he could start the season, but if it does not work out, he will be one of the first one to come and tell me he needs to play somewhere.”

Robbie Keane has definitely had a wonderful pre-season and he surely has high hopes to stay at least one more year with Spurs.

Have your say! Do you think Robbie will regain his place in the first team? Or will he leave Spurs again?

Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart has claimed that he would find it ‘impossible to turn down’ the offer of first team football from either Chelsea or Liverpool, and describing reported interest from the Premiership duo as ‘very flattering’.

The Dutch playmaker has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeau for over two years now, with the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United all credited with interest in the past. However, more recent reports have linked Chelsea and Liverpool with moves for the 27-year-old and Van der Vaart has hinted now may be the time for a move in order to secure first team football, something that he has failed to find at Madrid.

Van der Vaart has pledged not to play for another Spanish club, so a move to the Premier League could be on the cards and the player has opened the doors to either Chelsea or Liverpool should they offer him first team opportunities.

Van der Vaart told the Daily Star Sunday: “I have heard of the interest from Liverpool and Chelsea – and that is very flattering,”

“If either of them were willing to offer me first-team football, I will be honest that it would be very hard for me to not listen to what they had to say.

“I think I have the relationship with Madrid where they understand my position and would let me hold talks.

“I expect the majority of transfers to be concluded in the next two weeks, and if Chelsea or Liverpool wanted to talk with me I would at the very least listen to what they have to say.

“They are both giants, and if they could offer first-team football it may prove impossible to turn down.

“I wouldn’t be willing to play for any clubs in Spain out of respect for Madrid, so in my eyes the only other place to go would be the Premier League.

“It’s the only league that competes with the standard of La Liga.”

Written by Jack Kitson.

With Liverpool lacking in options following the sales of Fabio Aurelio and more recently the departure of Emiliano Insua, The Reds have reportedly turned their attention to Wayne Bridge. Speculation is growing that the former Chelsea and Southampton player is on his way out of Manchester City, after it was recently revealed that the Manchester club have captured the signature of Serbian left-back Aleksandar Kolarov for £17million.

It is no secret that Bridge, aged 29, has endured a problematic season. Whether this is due to a combination of irregular football and external matters or simply being unable to adjust to the demands and pressure placed upon his shoulders, is open to debate. At Manchester City he has struggled for both form and fitness and not to mention the psychological affects of the whole John Terry affair. At previous club Chelsea, despite winning a number of trophies, at no point did Bridge even come close to wrestling the left-back position away from Ashley Cole.

I have no hesitation in stating that Bridge enjoyed his best spell of football at Southampton, where he even managed a run of 113 consecutive games for the club, an impressive tally for any player at any level. Now, there’s no doubt in my mind that if he can rekindle some of the passion and consistency he showed at Southampton, he could potentially be a welcome asset to Roy Hodgson’s squad. But, and this is a big but, he becomes 30 next month, so age wise he could be considered a bit of a gamble. However, a change of scenery may just be the antidote that Bridge needs to recapture some of the form he showed at Southampton and on the rare occasions he was given an opportunity at Chelsea.

It would be interesting to hear if you Liverpool fans would welcome a move for the Man City left-back? Or alternatively, who you think would be an adequate replacement for the recent departures?

Keane has been widely tipped to leave White hart Lane this summer but is perhaps playing his way into Harry Redknapp’s plans for next season after latching on to Niko Kranjcar’s through-ball and slotting in to the bottom corner after 23 minutes.

Lisbon then scored two without reply to take the lead before Keane set up Jonathan Obika in the 70th minute, who squeezed the ball past goalkeeper Patricio to ensure a 2-2 draw for Spurs. Watch all the action below.

Emmanuel Frimpong has long been touted as a potential Arsenal star, and now the young Ghanaian has a chance to impress during the club’s preseason tour of Austria. He shares nationality and many attributes with a certain Chelsea player, but can Frimpong be Arsenal’s answer to Michael Essien?

Frimpong and fellow midfield destroyer Francis Coquelin provided a solid midfield base for the double-winning Arsenal youth team in 2009. Last season, while Coquelin continued his progress, Frimpong was dogged by injuries. This allowed Craig Eastmond to jump ahead of him in the pecking order – and somewhat surprisingly, straight into the first team squad.

With Coquelin moving on loan to Lorient for the duration of this season, a fully fit Frimpong was given a chance to impress during Arsenal’s first friendly at Barnet, and he was widely recognised as one of the best performers.

Frimpong was quick in the tackle, effective with the ball and altogether a determined bundle of energy against the League Two hosts.

The greatly improved Alex Song is now one of the first players on the teamsheet and rightly so, but Arsenal still do not have a ‘nasty’ Jack Russell-type midfielder who can snap at the oppositions heels, breaking up possession and committing fouls when needed. Chelsea have two such players in Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel, one of the reasons why they have been so successful in recent years.

But Arsenal may now have found that player in Frimpong.

Like Essien, Frimpong was born in Ghana, but he moved to England at the age of nine. The Accra-born player decided to play for England under-16s, but he has since switched his allegiance to Ghana.

Although primarily a defensive minded player, Essien enjoys a foray forwards to great effect, scoring stunning goals in the process – as sadly many Arsenal fans will remember. Although Frimpong lacks Essien’s shooting accuracy, as many Arsenal youth follows can testify, his all action style is very similar.

For Essien and Mikel read Song and Frimpong – it even has a nice ring to it.

Arsene Wenger will have the opportunity to assess Frimpong at first-hand during the ongoing Austrian training camp. The midfielder made his second start of preseason in the 3-0 win over Sturm Graz on Wednesday, putting in another composed and confident performance.

This time last year another young player, Jack Wilshere, was impressing on the tour, but this time around it looks to be Frimpong’s turn.

Given the new Premier League rules on homegrown talent, Frimpong may soon be given a first-team shirt competing with Denilson and Eastmond for the backup to Song. I certainly know who I would prefer to stand-in.

Does Emmanuel Frimpong have what it takes to make it in the first team? Have your say below.

Gabriel Obertan scored in the second game of Manchester United’s pre-season tour on Wednesday, as The Red Devils overcame Philadelphia Union 1-0. The Frenchman received the ball from Danny Welbeck before firing low in beyond the goalkeeper to put his side ahead 14 minutes from time. United held on to seal their second consecutive win of pre-season following their 3-1 triumph over Celtic last week. Obertan celebrated his first ever goal the club with a bizarre dance. United will now travel to New York before taking on Kansas City Wizards and MLS All Stars in the remaining games of their American tour. The expedition will then continue to Mexico before a clash against a League of Ireland All-Star XI in Dublin, Ireland on August 4th.

Written by Joe Carroll.

A Chelsea side made up largely of youth players could not do enough to prevent defeat at the hands of Dutch giants Ajax yesterday, succumbing to a 3-1 loss.

Chelsea fielded a less than understrength side at the Amsterdam ArenA with the likes of Ross Turnbull, Daniel Sturridge and Patrick van Aanholt all getting a run out. Whilst coach Carlo Ancelotti did start two senior players in John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien, defeat could not be helped against a near full strength Ajax side who are just one week away from beginning their Champions League campaign.

The fresh looking Chelsea side were up against it early on in this game and fell behind after 6 minutes to the delight of the home crowd and to the dismay of Chelsea’s Dutch born defender Jeffrey Bruma. A Christian Eriksen cross met the young Bruma’s head and deflected past ‘keeper Turnbull- not the start the 19 year old would have been planning on the return to his homeland.

Chelsea responded in a positive manner though, and their passing and quick movement was undone only by their own below par finishing. Better to clear the clutter from their scoring boots in these meaningless friendly games than in the Premier League curtain raiser on 14th of August. Chelsea’s persistence paid off however when on 25 minutes an old head had a hand in setting up young striker Sturridge for the equaliser.

Mikel found Franco di Santo who did well to evade the challenges of the Ajax rearguard. The Argentinian managed to get the ball to Strurridge who fired home with a first time effort, beating Holland’s World Cup ‘keeper Maarten Stekelenburg. What should have given the tourists the confidence and adventure to go on and further take this game to Ajax in fact had the adverse effect.

Chelsea were level for no more than a minute after a calamitous moment from ‘keeper Turnbull ensured that the hard work undertaken by his team mates was undone instantly. Ancelotti will be disappointed that it took nothing more than an Ajax goal kick to undo the Blues; Turnbull, sliding to collect Stekelenburg’s punt let the ball squeeze underneath him giving Siem de Jong the simplest of tap ins.

The unfortunate incident meant the Blues went in at half time a goal behind in a game in which they could easily have been winning. Inevitably, boss Ancelotti made three changes at half time, one of those bringing a days end to that of ‘keeper Turnbull who will prefer to forget this game sooner rather than later. Hilario replaced the young stopper whilst Scott Sinclair and Nathaniel Chalobah entered the fray for Billy Clifford and Josh McEachran respectively.

Sadly the second half passed largely without incident, the only one of notability among a barrage of substitutions from both sides being Ajax’s third and final goal. The young Chelsea defence had so far stood up to the challenge of Martin Jol’s side, with Rohan Ince particularly impressing. However they were undone late on when Ajax substitutes Hyun Jun Suk and Daley Blind combined to put the result beyond any doubt, the former tucking away a Blind cross at the back post.

Of course at this stage of pre season the result is not in anyway paramount and it is suspected that Ancelotti won’t be too displeased with the way things went in Amsterdam. The encounter with last season’s Eredivisie runners up gave youth the opportunity to show the Italian what talent he has at his disposal should his senior players go missing this season. The likes of Sturridge, Ince and di Santo will have done themselves no harm in their attempt to force themselves into the plans of their coach.

By the same token it was encouraging to see long term absentees Mikel and Essien come through the match unscathed, and Blues fans alike will hope they are used in a similar fashion in Chelsea’s upcoming friendly fixtures to ensure that they are fit and fighting for the Premier League kick off.

Whilst it was a shame the Blues could not keep their winning ways intact after their last outing at Crystal Palace, the game in Amsterdam was a necessary and important step towards a fit, healthy and injury free squad that will soon be boosted by the return of it’s World Cup stars. Lets just hope those blunders are ironed out in the auditions before the show begins at the Bridge on August 14th.

Team Line Ups

Chelsea: Turnbull (Hilario), B. Clifford (Chalobah), Bruma, Bertrand, van Aanholt (Ince), Mikel (C. Clifford), Essien (Cork), Matic, McEachran (Sinclair), Sturridge, di Santo (Lalkovic)

Ajax: Stekelenburg, Oleguer (Blind), Alderweireld, Vertonghen (capt), Anita (Emanuelson), Enoh (Bonevacia), Lindgren, Sarpong, Eriksen (De Zeeuw), Zeegelaar, De Jong

What did you make of Chelsea’s defeat in Amsterdam?…How important was Michael Essien’s return to the Chelsea fold?…What are of the team do you think needs strengthening?…please leave your comments below…

Ferguson has been keeping an eye on the Standard Liege star for over a year now and even wrote him a letter of support after Defour suffered his foot injury. It is believed Fergie will step up his interest after reports emerged that new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson was also lining up a bid for the 22-year-old.

Defour’s contract with Liege expires in 2013 and his agent confirmed United’s interest, but also revealed clubs all over Europe were keeping track of his client.

“Sir Alex has been interested in Steven since he sent him the letter last September when he was struggling with injury.”He is still interested but we have to wait for an offer to be accepted by Standard Liege.

Liverpool FC have appointed Roy Hodgson as the new manager of Englands most successful football club. Roy Hodgson has been snapped up from Fulham after Liverpool had their most disappointing season in 11 years, and Fulham had their best season in their recent history culminating in a Europa League Final.

I really feel Rafa Benitez and not the owners is to blame for last season’s poor performance mainly because of the signing of Albert Aquilani and Glen Johnson, Both players may turn out to be useful additions for the club in the future, but last season Liverpool needed to buy a back up striker for Fernando Torres which they failed to do and also a left winger when 17 million would have been enough to sign Juan Mata from valencia, who Torres recommended to the Club. These failures led to the downfall of not only the club last season but led to Rafa’s departure as well.

With Roy Hodgson now officially announced as the next manager, Liverpool are back under English Management and more importantly a vastly experienced manager. Who performed wonders at Fulham last season and quite rightly won the LMA Manager of the Year Award. Roy’s ability to work on a shoe string budget and use his man management skills to get the best out of his players will be needed in what I believe to be a season which Liverpool need to rebuild. The problem for the club would be the new sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered kicks in from this next season, and am sure they wouldn’t want their name be associated with failure in their first season in English Football.

Roy Hodgson has proved his knowledge of the transfer market while at Fulham, which I’m sorry to say for all the money spent was one of Rafa Benitez’s main faults, I’m sure Liverpool fans would say, what about Torres, Alonso, Reina or Mascherano but apart from these players which other of Rafa’s signings have made the grade, some fans might count Skrtel, Agger, Kuyt, as other good signings but I still think they need to do a lot to be classed as the World Class players Liverpool Football Club require. The list of flops vastly outweigh the successes, these include, Morientes, Robbie Keane, Dossena, Aquilani, Babel, Riera, Krygiakos, Ngog, Lucas, and even free transfer signings like Degen and Voronin have been termed flops

Many English football fans will not be too familiar with the Croydon born manager before he came to Fulham, in fact, after a very short playing career, Roy spent most of his managerial career abroad. Roy Hodgson’s first job was in Sweden, at Halmstads FC where he won 2 Swedish titles. In 1985, he took over Malmo FF, another Swedish side with whom he won 5 consecutive league titles. As the national manager of Switzerland, he lost only one game in the qualification stages to the 1994 World Cup in USA, in a group that contained the likes of Italy and Portugal and consequently Switzerland qualified for their first World Cup since 1966, in which they managed to get through to the second round only to lose to Spain.

In 1995, Hodgson was appointed Inter Milan manager, he helped turn a failing team back to league and European contenders and from here he went on to his first English Premier League job, with Blackburn. However, apart from qualifying for Europe in his first season, the next was followed with poor transfer dealings and a failed season- perhaps the lowest point of his managerial career. Defying the critics who said he could not adapt to English football management, Roy Hodgson took over Fulham in 2007 and proved them wrong; avoiding near-certain relegation in his first season there, he turned it around completely the next, finishing in 7th, Fulham’s highest ever Premier League finish, and also guaranteeing UEFA Cup qualification for the next year. And what a year that proved out to be for the Englishman. After inspiring victories over teams like Juventus and Hamburg, Fulham battled it out to their first major European Cup Final in their 130 year history, only narrowly losing to a very talented Atletico Madrid.

No one can fault Hodgson’s CV, it is one of the most interesting and decorated in the game and is proof that Hodgson has the ability to revive a team like Liverpool; he will inherit a squad with at least 4 world class players in Torres, Gerrard and Reina and Mascherano and through selling fringe players, he should definitely be able to raise enough capital to ensure the arrival of some exciting new talent. As with all managers, only time will tell, but when it comes to knowledge and experience of the game, Hodgson is rivalled by few and despite the difficulty of the task ahead of him, will strive to bring success to a club that needs it desperately more than at any other time in their long history.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry scored against Tottenham Hotspur on his debut for the New York Red Bulls. It’s always nice to see Spurs conceding goals, but it was particularly pleasing to see that TH14 could still put one past the old enemy. Henry opened the scoring in the 24th minute guiding the ball into the bottom corner giving his new club the lead against a strong Spurs side. Unfortunately, Henry didn’t appear after the interval and Spurs went on to win the game thanks to goals from Robbie Keane and Gareth Bale.

Arsenal have pulled out of negotiations with Everton for Phil Jagielka after the Merseyside club rejected our latest £15m bid, according to the Metro.
Jagielka has been linked with a move to the Emirates this summer as Arsene Wenger looks for defensive reinforcements following the departures of William Gallas, Mikel Silvestre, Phillippe Senderos and More >

Arsenal have pulled out of negotiations with Everton for Phil Jagielka after the Merseyside club rejected our latest £15m bid, according to the Metro.

Jagielka has been linked with a move to the Emirates this summer as Arsene Wenger looks for defensive reinforcements following the departures of William Gallas, Mikel Silvestre, Phillippe Senderos and potentially Sol Campbell. Laurent Koscielny has already been snapped up but Wenger is looking to add at least one more centre-back to his ranks.

It looks like it won’t be Jagielka though as Everton are pricing him out of a move by slapping a £20m price-tag on his head. And people wonder why Wenger doesn’t buy more English players!

I’m a fan of Jagielka but £20m….seriously? He is never worth that much and i can’t blame him if Arsene has called off his interest. If the FA want a reason why the top clubs aren’t signing more English players, look no further. Until English players are valued by their talent and not their passport, clubs will continue to look abroad for better value for money.

There is now talk we may turn to Pape Diakhate of Dynamo Kiev, who is younger and available for half the price.

As always, take transfer rumours with a pinch of salt or they can become hazardous to your health!

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed he is in the market for ‘two or three’ new signings and believes with the right additions, Spurs can challenge for the title next season.

The club enjoyed it’s highest premier league finish last season, beating Manchester City to that all-important fourth place and a shot at the champions league. Now Redknapp is eager to build on that success and is in the market for some fresh faces.

“We need two or three players who can make the difference,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“We’ve got a big squad, but I do feel we need just that little bit of quality in one or two areas if we’re going to move on from where we were last year.”

Redknapp also feels that next season is the best chance in recent memory that Spurs have to make a serious bid for the title.

“We did great last year, but we just need to push on and maintain that.

“We want to win the championship. It’s not impossible.

“Fourth place last year was marvellous, but I think this is the best chance Tottenham have had in how many years to really push on and maintain that, and become a regular top four team and maybe push for a championship.

“We’re never going to get a better chance so now’s the time to have a go at doing that. So I still feel with two or three players it would make the difference and give us the squad we need. And if we get them in I think the sky’s the limit for us.”

By Ross Mackiewicz.

Liverpool’s new signing Joe Cole has described his new club as “the biggest in the country.” The 28 year olds contract at Chelsea expired at the turn of the month after completing a seven year stint with the Londoners where he won a number of honours including the club’s first ever double. Speculation had mounted for months as to whose team colours the England man would be adorning. However despite no Champions League football at Anfield this season Cole opted to sign for The Reds due to the size and magnitude of the Merseyside club.

He has signed a four year contract with wages at around £90,000 per week. He went onto reveal that he endeared to the club five years ago during Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final against the five time European Cup winners where the atmosphere from the Anfield faithful gave him Goosebumps.

“I tried to take everything out of the equation, take the financial and location side out and just thought in football terms.” Cole said.

“I thought about the semi-final of the Champions League in 2005 when I ran on to the field and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I was thinking about playing in that atmosphere every week and that swung it for me.”

“I know I have made the right decision and I am looking forward to the challenge. I have played in London all my life. I could have stayed at Chelsea because the fans loved me and I won things, but I wanted to challenge myself and when I knew Liverpool were interested it was a no-brainer because they are the biggest club in the country.”

Cole’s remarks may come as a surprise to those at Stamford Bridge as he has more or less branded his transfer as a step up from Chelsea. The Blues were unwilling to meet with Cole’s wage demands which have subsequently opened the door for Liverpool to grab his signature.

Cole has been impressed with manager Roy Hodgson as he outlined the clubs plans. He believes with the calibre of player at the manager’s disposal with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres leaves the club are in good stead for the new season.

“The club finished seventh last year, which wasn’t good enough, and the manager explained where the club wants to go.” Cole revealed.

“I jumped on board because with the players we have here and the players we are looking to bring in. it’s definitely going in the right direction.”

Cole went onto to express his excitement of linking up with Fernando Torres as well as how proud he is to be a part of Liverpool Football Club.

“We have talked about positions in the team and types of formations Roy wants to play and I just want to be part of the team.” said Cole.

“I want to go out there and to run and fight for the lads and the fans. That’s what I’ll always do and Roy is the man who can make sure we are a nice unit as a team.”

“I am excited about playing with Fernando and obviously I know Stevie (Gerrard), Carra (Jamie Carragher) and Jonno (Glen Johnson) from the England set-up. Pepe Reina, Alberto Aquilani – there are a lot of big-name players here but I will need time to settle down and relax into the club. I am proud to be playing for this club and will give my all in every training session and every game to help the club be successful and put some pots in the trophy cabinet.”

What do you make of Joe’s comments? Are Liverpool the biggest football club in the country? Has he made the right move? Let us know.

Chelsea have been linked with a £20m move for Benfica and Brazil midfielder Ramires, according the the Daily Mail. The Blues are hoping to tie-up a quick deal for the 23-year-old to head off interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Ramires enjoyed an impressive first season with Benfica, winning a league and cup double, and earned himself a surprise call-up to the Brazilian World Cup squad after his dogged displays and tireless work ethic caught Dunga’s eye.

Chelsea made initial enquiries about him before the World Cup and have apparently followed up with a firm offer. Ramires claims he is aware of interest and it would be a ‘dream’ to play for a club like Chelsea:

Ramires said: ‘My agent has told me that a number of clubs are interested in signing me. We all know that the World Cup is the perfect stage to prove your worth. It would be a dream for me to play for a big club such as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Chelsea.’

Carlo Ancelotti is desperate to strengthen his midfield after losing Joe Cole, Deco and Michael Ballack over the summer. His only addition so far has been Yossi Benayoun and Ramires would provide the Italian with options as he can play in various positions, although he was predominantly a right-sided midfielder for Benfica last season.

It remains to be seen if these reports have any substance, but as always, take transfer rumours with a pinch of salt as they can be hazardous to your health!

Written by Ryan Kane.

On Tuesday last Sky Sports reported that Manchester City were planning a £20 million bid for Didier Drogba. A Chelsea spokesman has since claimed that the hype surrounding the striker is “irrelevant” after stating that he was “not for sale”. Who knows what to believe.

As yet another transfer tale unfolds we are left to sift through the tittle-tattle, separating what we believe to be genuine news from the plentiful supply of fabricated rubbish. Didier Drogba has been Chelsea’s goal scoring hero for the last six years and for many “Blues” fans keeping him at Stamford Bridge goes down as an absolute must. His outstanding speed, strength and power makes him one of the world’s greatest strikers. With this label comes an understandable interest from Europe’s élite. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan and the likes – You can’t blame them, who wouldn’t want Didier Drogba in their side.

Albeit this summer the interest comes from an ostensibly new face at the billionaire transfer checkout, Manchester City. The oodles of cash being pumped into Eastland’s has bolstered City to new heights. Already linked with an audacious move for Inter Milan striker Mario Balotelli, Roberto Mancini will add further names to his transfer market shopping basket before the new season starts. The Italian has already delved into his supposedly infinite transfer kitty following the signings of David Silva and Toure. Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure linked up with brother Kolo at City in June following his apparent £28m move from Barcelona, fans will hope the duo can now persuade international teammate Drogba to join them at Eastland’s.

Drogba’s agent, Thierno Seydi, has recently claimed that a move to Manchester City was a possibility. The cash-strapped club will be expected to fork out in the region of £20 million for the 32-year old striker. Bargain if you ask me. Given the choice between Didier and David Villa, who Barcelona paid a staggering £34.2 for in May, I would gladly choose Drogba. Yes, even despite the Spaniards outstanding World Cup campaign! The reason simply being that Drogba’s goal scoring record speaks for itself, a monstrous 131 goals since his move to Stamford Bridge in 2004. The ex-Marseille man has played an instrumental part in the club’s success over the past six years. The three time Premier League winner was crowned Chelsea 2010 Player of the Year in May – No surprises there, even in spite of Drogba’s questionable 2009/10 form.

Didier Drogba is a Premier League prodigy who seemingly City will do anything to get their hands on. However it will clearly take something special to prise him away from Stamford Bridge, after all Chelsea are the best team in the country, aren’t they?

Over the past week we have been running polls for readers to select their Dream XI from the South Africa World Cup. We have tallied up the votes so here is the World Cup 2010 Team of the Tournament as selected by you, the fans.

Casillas (Spain) 44%

Maicon (Brazil) 9% Ramos (Spain) 12% Puyol (Spain) 15% Lahm (Germany) 16%

Sneijder (Holland) 21.4% Schweinsteiger (Germany) 17.7% Ozil (Germany) 16.9%

Mueller (Germany) 20.4% Forlan (Uruguay) 28.8% Villa (Spain) 26.5%

Predictably there is a heavy Spanish influence with four of their victories squad making the team, and it seems Germany impressed many of you as they too have four representatives. Goalkeeper Casillas was a run-away winner with 44% of the total votes in the goalkeeping category.

Before you say it, we know that Sergio Ramos played at right-back for Spain but the poll was for defenders and not individual positions and you picked three full-backs to be in the XI, so Ramos is down as a centre-back in the team.

The midfield category was a tight affair and surprisingly neither Xavi or Iniesta made the cut, the later only narrowly missed out by 0.6% though. Germany’s impressive duo Ozil and Schweinsteiger both did enough to make the grade while Holland’s Wesley Sneijder was the top midfielder with 21.4%.

The forward three were miles apart from their opposition, each getting over 20% and all three accounted for 75.7% of the total votes in the striker poll. Player of the Tournament Deigo Forlan was the most voted for out-field player with 28.8%.

So there you have it, the World Cup XI selected by Football-Talk visitors. Not a bad side is it?!

You can view the poll results below:

Written by Marvin Williams.

So Roy’s been the man appointed to ‘steady the ship’ at Anfield, but he has to revive it from its sinking position first. The owners are struggling to keep their heads above water, their top sailors may jump overboard and a cargo full of expectation doesn’t make for a good formula. The Anfield faithful seem to be floating in-between two extremes and the jury is still out on the appointment of the new manager. What has arisen however is the collective idea that Hodgson simply has to get the ship floating again with anything else will be a bonus, unfortunately the situation is a bit more complicated than that.

The new gaffer goes into the job already combating several obstacles. The American Navy have control, the Russian boat owner wants to invade and the Spanish Armanda came, made a mess and sailed off to Italy. Worked out all the characters yet? Well let’s start from the beginning.

The ship lost its balance due to the books upstairs, Double-decker ship you ask? Of course not, they’d struggle to afford lifejackets! Instead I’m referring to those of the owners in the finance department and their inability to balance the books. The problems of the American duo are well documented and you feel that until they depart it’s merely a case of papering over the cracks. The decision to hire Hodgson however was an astute business move on their behalf, as unlike Benitez and his constant battles with them, the new man can be trusted to maintain a dignified silence regardless of what’s going on behind the scenes. But is that what Liverpool need right now? Don’t they need someone to maintain the same pressure in order to reiterate the clubs desire for new owners? If Roy manages to stabilise things again all will be forgotten until it all goes wrong again, as is the pattern with football fans (Newcastle-Mike Ashley and United-Glazers).

The renovation has been left to Roy after Rafa’s contribution to Liverpool’s demise, which I’m sure we need no reminder of.

Abramovich has passed by and personally answered Benayoun’s SOS call, and another trip could have devastating effects. I definitely know how it feels to constantly have your best players linked with moves away from your club, but the player’s choice to remain silent someone fuels that. Any sign of vulnerability and the waters will be tested so everyone must remain on board. Gerrard yesterday would have been a welcome relief and if Torres isn’t in too much pain to speak or Mascherano can get back from his holiday on that remote island they’ll have the decency to do the same.

At the majority of other clubs I could accept the ‘steady the ship argument’ but Liverpool presents a different proposition. They’re arguably Britain’s biggest club hence the reason why expectation remains high, so regardless of all the issues Hodgson will need to meet or exceed that expectation. They may be going through a period of transition but can’t afford to take one thing at a time, football doesn’t work like that. With the clubs financial impediment a seasons out of the Champions League is immensely costly. I heard going into administration being talked about as a real possibility a few months ago, so I’m sure that the six million that has already gone out of club in compensation packages (to sort out the managerial position) hasn’t helped. If City or Spurs manage to cement themselves in the Champions League at Liverpool’s expense then the future doesn’t look bright.

I genuinely do hope that things go swimmingly for Hodgson and LFC and if the balance is got right I’m sure it will do, but if it doesn’t a great institution could drown.

We are only into the third week of the new era at England’s most successful football club, Liverpool FC, yet the possibly unfashionable, certainly undeterred Roy Hodgson is already showing signs of banishing the club’s difficult 2009/10 season and re-building a team capable of challenging for major honours, glory and silverware.

Before the World Cup, Scouse fans were left to reflect on an extremely underwhelming 7th place league finish, with marquee players Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard injured and off form respectively. All of this was, and still is, compounded by the persistent rumour mill that see the aforementioned El Nino and Stevie G, as well as Argentine pitbull Javier Mascherano, linked with pastures new.

However, on the 1st July, 62-year old Hodgson swapped the Thames for the Mersey, and the former Finland, Blackburn and Inter Milan gaffer has wasted little time in setting about fixing a club which many could argue was in disarray. It seems evident that talks with both Gerrard and Torres have helped to convince them to stay, but one masterstroke which may have really made up their minds was the unveiling of new blood primed to wear the famous Liverpool number 7 shirt.

The signing of England international Joe Cole on a 4 year deal has gone a long way to lifting the acrimonious atmosphere that was threatening to settle above Anfield as its own personal volcanic ash cloud. It was a victory for Hodgson and the club on so many fronts; genuine quality and experience added to the Liverpool midfield, a statement of intent to the other important players within the squad, and, most interestingly, the acquisition of a player that was fancied by many, and was heavily linked with every club that finished in the top 5 of the Premiership last season, barring Chelsea of course. The player himself will relish the big time occasion, and will no doubt feel he may have something to prove after an injury plagued final season at Stamford Bridge coupled with a disappointing World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Furthermore, everyone connected with Fulham will be quick to say that Hodgson is a man who can provide expert man-management. The transformation of Bobby Zamora last season was down to increased confidence in the player installed by the manager; give that to players of better quality in Torres, Gerrard and co, and we may not see the shrugs and grimaces that were so painfully evident during the conclusion of Rafa Benitez’s reign. The Spaniard, now Inter Milan boss, was especially adept at tactics, not least in his early years at Anfield where he led them to Champions League glory on that night in Istanbul. Player relationships weren’t the strongest colour on his managerial palette though. This was most evident during a game at St. Andrews against Birmingham last season, where Torres was substituted with an hour gone, replaced by David Ngog. Gerrard’s shocked expression was caught on camera, and fate ensued in the final half hour where Ngog, still learning his trade as a young professional, fluffed three chances as Liverpool only drew. Torres apparently was fit.

Hodgson will rest players; there is no doubt about that. Every club challenging in four different competitions simply has to rotate their squad to keep players fresh and fit. Despite the criticism that went towards Benitez for his tinkering, the crowd’s primary frustration was the performances and, ultimately, the results. If Hodgson can transform Liverpool into a confident team, freeing Gerrard, benefiting from the hunger and creativity of Cole and other new recruit Milan Jovanovic, getting the best from young players such as Ngog and Lucas Leiva, then the club will very quickly be on the road to recovery.

What though, will be considered success for Liverpool football club this coming season? The Kop has seen bitter rivals Manchester United equal the eighteen titles that they have won, and despite finishing second two years ago, really haven’t even looked like winning the title for a long time. Reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League last season was decent enough, but this partial success didn’t paper over the deep cracks that symbolised a shameful Champions League exit at the group stage and falling at the first hurdle in the FA Cup with a home replay defeat against Championship Reading.

Hodgson, despite his good start, has a long road to travel. Fans and the board will demand Champions League qualification as a minimum, coupled with progress in the Europa League and maybe even a domestic cup run. Fulham’s European success saw an understandable yet dramatic dip in form in the league from March to May; it is correct to say that Liverpool Football Club won’t be looking for a similar pattern.

Written by Basil James.

The fact that Eduardo da Silva has inked a three year contract with Shakhtar Donetsk is now a commonly known fact that even Sarah Palin probably knows the intricate details of the deal. Eduardo, who has scored 22 goals in 65 appearances for the Gunners was sold to the Ukrainian club for a little over £6 million. Good business for a striker who has been a pale shadow of himself after a horrific injury, one might say. Except for Arsene Wenger’s words a few days ago. “Eduardo is an Arsenal player and I am expecting a lot from him this season” was the exact sentence he uttered.

Wenger told a white faced lie to the club and its fans? Surely, it appears so. There is no way Wenger did not know of the deal when he made that statement. In fact, he went on to say:

“He had a terrible injury – he went through hell – but I think his work rate is fantastic and his determination, which is exceptional, will be of great use to Arsenal”.

He made this statements on July 13 or thereabouts, categorically stating that the Croatian forward would be a feature at the Emirates for the coming season. What is an average Gooner to infer from this? Only one thing- the dear manager has blatantly lied to us.

Eduardo’s utility to the club was decreasing by the day, ever since that grotesque angle injury he suffered. In that context, it makes perfect sense to let him go, to offer him a fresh start. But, if that had been the intention, why not say so from the start? Wenger has effectively cheated Arsenal supporters across the globe with his statements. Eduardo was reportedly involved in negotiations for a week, meaning Wenger probably knew of the proceedings when he made his statement and also had plenty of time to correct it.

In this light it is interesting to check other statements Wenger has made throughout this transfer window. As Barca continue their obscene efforts to lure Fabregas away, Wenger and the club has stated frequently that the captain in staying at the Grove. This puts a disquieting thought in the minds of Gooners. So, is Cesc staying? Or will he leave too, like Eduardo? Wenger has said many times that Fabregas would be donning the Arsenal colours this season, but then he said the same about Eduardo and look where we are now. Wenger has even said that Cesc will retain the captain’s armband. Is it just hogwash or is Wenger telling the truth?

Sandro Rosell apparently flew to London to push the Fabregas agenda for Barca, which comes on the back of NINE players from the Catalonian club saying Fabregas is coming to Barca. Platini, are you sleeping? It will be some time before we see the end of this, though it is inevitable that Cesc Fabregas would return to Barcelona. The more immediate concern is whether he will be at Arsenal for the coming season.

Arsene Wenger made a huge mistake by lying to Arsenal fans about the Eduardo situation and has lost the trust we Gooners had in the manager. Let us hope he can regain some confidence from the fans with some scintillating moves in the window and the season.

Santos has rejected a £15million bid from domestic double winners Chelsea for their highly talented teenage star Neymar.

The 18 year old Brazilian is one of world footballs most sort after youngsters after netting 27 goals in just 29 appearances for ‘The Peixe’ since the turn of the year. A staggering return from such a novice to the professional game.

London rivals West Ham United also expressed their interest in the wonder kid last month and firmed it up with a concrete offer of £12million which was subsequently rejected. It is believed that the Brazilian club is haggling for an offer within the region of £20million despite him having a release clause which can be triggered with a £29.6million offer.

Santos released a statement thanking the English champions for their interest but they have no intention of entering negotiations. The statement read:

“Late on Tuesday morning, Santos FC received an official offer from Chelsea for the economic rights of Neymar.”

“President Luis Alvaro de Oliveira Ribeiro has sent a response to the English club thanking them for their interest and reiterating the fact that Santos FC have no interest in opening negotiations.”

Interestingly Manchester City have first refusal on Neymar after negotiating the clause in Robinho’s loan to the Brazilian outfit back in January. City if they wish can match any accepted bids as well as having the option to trade Robinho in a permanent swap.

Neymar is also partly-owned by an investment group who would have to relinquish their share on him to abide by the Premier League’s rules of clubs having sole ownership of their players. This rule was implemented following Carlos Tevez’s and Javier Mascherano’s arrival to English shores four years ago thanks to Media Sports Investments.

By Siobhan McCall

It looks as if things are finally starting to fall into place for Liverpool. Yesterday, the news that Joe Cole was set to join the Reds on a free transfer raised spirits, especially as Champions League sides Arsenal and Spurs had both expressed interest in the former Chelsea star. And today, Steven Gerrard gave his seal of approval to Liverpool’s new no 7 and also gave the biggest hint yet that he will remain a Red, stating that it will be;

fantastic to play alongside him in a red shirt for Liverpool

Gerrard has been linked with a move away from Anfield throughout the last few months. Real Madrid looked to be the most likely destination, especially as their new manager Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the Liverpool captain and he, twice, almost signed Gerrard during his spell at Chelsea. Liverpool, however, made it clear to Real that their prize midfielder was not for sale and Los Galacticos president Florentino Perez was apparently put off by both his age and valuation, with Liverpool reportedly asking for £58m.

This news will come as a relief to Liverpool fans and it also suggests that Roy Hodgson may indeed be the right man for the job. Gerrard hinted to the Liverpool Echo that the former Fulham boss may have played a crucial role in his decision to stay at the club, declaring how he is;

very impressed with his plans for the future

He did, however, suggest that he had not thought about moving away from Merseyside and added;

I made it clear that I simply needed to concentrate on the World Cup and then have a decent holiday with my family. I wanted the chance to meet Roy Hodgson privately.

While it remains to be seen whether Joe Cole will become one of Liverpool’s legendary no 7’s, his arrival at the club has certainly added some much needed optimism for the coming season. When he’s on form, Cole is one of the most naturally talented wingers in the Premiership, and the combination of him, Gerrard and Fernando Torres could give Liverpool a lethal attack.

So here’s hoping that up next there will be some word from Fernando Torres about his future to complete a hat trick of good news for the Reds.

Robin Van Persie has officially changed his shirt number from 11 to 10. He takes up the number vacated by William Gallas and follows in the foot-steps of fellow dutchman Dennis Bergkamp who achieved legendary status at Arsenal wearing the famous No.10 during his time at the club.

I am delighted we have a ‘proper’ No.10 again. I was not a big fan of Gallas wearing it, in fact it pi**ed me off. So to see Robin donning the famous number next season will be a welcome relief. Surprisingly Carlos Vela will be wearing Van Persie’s old No.11 shirt next season after changing from 12. Carlos is hardly regarded as a first-team regular yet but maybe this is a sign that Wenger is about to show more faith in the young Mexican.

Arsenal have also followed North London rivals Tottenham in banning the controversial Vuvuzelas from their stadium with immediate effect. A statement on Arsenal.com read:

Further to their hugely debated involvement at this summer’s World Cup Finals in South Africa, Arsenal Football Club has decided to forbid the use of vuvuzelas within Emirates Stadium with immediate effect.

This decision has been taken to ensure the enjoyment and safety of supporters on Matchdays, which is of paramount importance to the Club.

Can’t say I’m disappointed with the decision. At the World Cup they were a novelty at first but by the third or fourth match they were just plain annoying.

Eduardo is on the verge of leaving Arsenal after Croatia manager Slavan Bilic confirmed the striker had decided to make the move to Ukraine. It is believed a £6m fee has been agreed with Shakhtar Donetsk and Eduardo has already agreed personal terms and completed a medical on Monday under the supervision of Shakhtar medical officer Francisco Biosca.

Arsene Wenger was initially believed to be against letting Eduardo leave but after speaking to Slaven Bilic, Croatia and Shakhtar captain Darijio Srna and ex-team mate Ognjen Vukojevic, the 27-year-old striker has decided a move away from the Emirates is best for all concerned.

Bilic confirmed that he had spoken with Eduardo and was confident he would do well with Donetsk.

I spoke with Eduardo. He was very pleased with the move to Shakhtar. He is going to a strong league. This season they will once again play in the Champions League, have many difficult matches and this is excellent for the national team.’The captain of Shakhtar is Darijo Srna, in the team there are a lot of Brazilians – I have no doubt that Eduardo will quickly adapt to Donetsk.’

Eduardo took advice from his friend and international team mate Srna who believes the striker will “bring many benefits’ to the Shakhtar team.

‘Eduardo is one of the best strikers in the world and, if there is an agreement, he will bring us many benefits.’

Dudu also spoke with Ognjen Vukojevic who he played alongside at Dinamo Zagreb and will now line-up against as the midfielder now plays for Dynamo Kiev. Vukojevic confirmed the discussions and believes the chance for Eduardo to play regular first team football will help him regain his past form.

‘He called me to ask what it’s like to live in Ukraine,’ said Vukojevic. ‘I replied: “Do not worry, you made the right choice”.

‘Now we will become great rivals. It is definitely a good move. At Shakhtar he will become the first-choice striker, get plenty of game time and return to his best condition.’

It’s a real shame that Eduardo has been forced to leave Arsenal. A lack of first team opportunities may have had something to do with his decision, but he has never been the same player since that horrific leg break at Birmingham. Perhaps a change of scenery is best for him to move on and forget that fateful day. I wish him all the best and hope to see him banging in the goals for Shakhtar next season, unless we meet them in the Champions League of course!
