As Les Lawson so well put it on LFC TV we have not bought a striker since we got rid of Robbie Keane 12 months ago and no new forward has come in since then.
With Liverpool panicked into player swap deals in an effort to bring an average goal-scorer in Carlton Cole to the club at the 11th hour, it showed how little money manager Roy Hodgson had to play with.
Its a sorry day at Anfield when we cannot afford to buy a second rate forward in Cole, who only gets about 10 goals a season with the Hammers.
Maybe it is a blessing in disguise, with new owners, hopefully in by early October, then we can plan to bring in some top class players. We live in hope.

Liverpool will sign West Ham striker Carlton Cole today after the clubs agreed a £10 million fee for the forward, according to reports. Cole began his career at Chelsea in 2001, spending spells out on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers, Charlton Athletic and Aston Villa before being transferred to West Ham United in 2006. More >

He made 19 England U21 appearances (scoring six goals), and made his full international debut for the England national football team on 11 February 2009 in a friendly match against Spain.

It should prove to be a good bit of business for Liverpool manager as he looks to bolster his attack for the coming season. The former Chelsea player was sold to West Ham a couple of seasons ago and has been a success at the hammers, scoring 10 goals in an injury-hit season. Cole should prove to be the perfect foil for Torres as he is quick and strong and has an eye for a goal.
Well done Roy Hodgson in getting a quality English forward into the club.

Liverpool’s new signing Raul Meireles has stated that he is finally fulfilling his dream of playing in the Premier League.

The 27 year old has been one of Europe’s most sought-after stars for a number of years but a move overseas had never materialised up until now. Liverpool confirmed the deal late on Saturday night where he was subsequently unveiled to the Liverpool faithful prior to their 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon.

The Portuguese international has joined from FC Porto in a deal believed to around £11.5 million. Having made his name in the city of Porto with Boavista and the city’s namesake side, the midfield anchorman has expressed his pleasure about his arrival to England.

He is delighted to be finally fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing in England’s top division.

“It has been a long time coming but finally I have achieved my dream of playing in England.” he told the club’s official website.

He is also paid tribute to new manager Roy Hodgson who played an integral role for his arrival to Merseyside.

“Liverpool are an historic club and I am happy for the move. Roy Hodgson was key because he worked so hard to get me.”

“I hope the fans will one day remember me for my success at Liverpool.”

This move will now push Javier Mascherano’s departure to Barcelona or Internazionale. The Argentina captain had expressed his desire to leave and will finally get his wish following Meireles’s arrival.

Meanwhile Paul Konchesky is also set to be unveiled as Hodgson’s latest recruit.

The left-back will reunite with his former boss who was part of the fabric at Craven Cottage who heroically reached the Europa League Final back in May.

With the close of the transfer window looming, newspapers are filling their back pages with transfer stories to get the fans excited. Managers are expected to be making some last ditch moves to strengthen their squads in the coming days so here is a round up of the latest transfer gossip doing the rounds.

Gunner’s defender deal delayed

Sebastien Squillaci has apparently flown back to Spain after undergoing his medical at the Emirates….don’t worry Gunners fans, he’s only gone back to tie up a few loose ends before completing his move to Arsenal. Squillaci will not be signed in time to make the trip to Ewood Park to face Blackburn on Saturday, with an official announcement not expected until Sunday at the earliest. The fee is in the region of £6m and some reports claim he will wear the number 18 shirt.

Spurs to miss out on Parker

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has said that although he remains interested in signing Scott Parker, a deal seems unlikely as the Hammers are refusing to do business according to the Guardian.

Spurs had a bid in the region of £8m rejected by West Ham earlier this month and when asked if he was still tracking the 29-year-old, Redknapp said:

“I am saying nothing. I don’t think anything is going to happen with Scott Parker. They don’t want to sell him so …”

Lassana Diarra is also a player on Redknapp’s radar but his wages may prove to be a sticking point.

United weighing up Defour move

Manchester United are considering making a late move for long-term target Steven Defour, according to Sky Sports News. Sir Alex Ferguson has tracked the Standard Liege midfielder for well over a year and even send him a letter of support when Defour suffered a serious foot injury.

Defour has been linked with several clubs across Europe but United are confident they can lure him to Old Trafford and sources at Sky Sports claim they are considering a late bid in order to secure his signature.

Liverpool make Konchesky move

Liverpool have contacted Fulham about the availability of left-back Paul Konchesky, manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed. Speaking ahead of Thursday’s Europa League tie against Trabzonspor, Hodgson said:

“We had discussions with Fulham about whether they were prepared to sell any of their players,” said Hodgson.

“I’d be lying if I said Paul was not a name we considered,”

“Whether or not there is a chance of business is very much up in the air,” added Hodgson.

Chelsea set to miss out on Argentine

Chelsea have made a £10m offer for Bayern Munich defender Martin Demichelis but are set to lose out on his signature as the player wants to join Sevilla, according to the Daily Mail.

The Argentine is currently at loggerheads with Bayern over a contract extension and apparently club sources claim Chelsea have made their move. As well as Sevilla, Juventus are also keen on the 29-year-old.

**remember these are only rumours and should be taken with a pinch of salt. these stories are taken from several newspapers and were not created by this website – Football-Talk.co.uk**

Roy Hodgson has clearly informed Barcelona that they are going to have to make a substantial offer if they are to land Liverpool’s want-away midfielder Javier Mascherano, but are the club asking for too much? It is becoming evident that Barcelona are the only team left in the running for the industrious Argentine, after Inter admitted they would be unwilling to pay Liverpool’s asking price. Some reports have suggested that Barcelona have offered only £12 Million for the Argentine, for whom Liverpool shelled out £18 million just over three years ago. Other reports have claimed that Arsenal’s former playmaker Aleksander Hleb could be offered in part exchange.

With the recent publication of the Catalan clubs finances revealing the staggering £370 million debt owed by Barcelona, it is no surprise that they are unwilling to stump up the alleged £25-30 million requested by Liverpool for Mascherano’s services. Some would suggest that with that magnitude of debt they should not be allowed to bid for any players, especially after already giving Valencia £34million for David Villa this summer.

In reality, if Barcelona refused to splash the cash on their other primary summer transfer target, Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas, they are not going to be bullied into over-spending on a player who is already desperate to leave his current club. Javier Mascherano is a good player, and his presence will be missed for Liverpool should he leave in this window, but he does not offer Barcelona’s players or fans the popularity of Fabregas, or have the same commercial and football appeal attached to the Arsenal captain. For these reasons, it is unrealistic to expect Barcelona to substantially increase their debt to secure Mascherano’s signature. Liverpool’s alleged asking price for Mascherano is not unrepresentative of his qualities, and in most circumstances would be a perfectly reasonable price for the Argentine. However, because of Mascherano’s apparent desperation to quit Anfield, Barcelona have eyed a quick bargain and cannot be blamed for trying their luck.

Even though Reds boss Hodgson admitted after the loss to Manchester City that Mascherano was unhappy at Liverpool and wanted to leave, he is clearly going to stand his ground, and Mascherano won’t be leaving on the cheap. It is unlikely that Mascherano will stage a protest against Liverpool’s treatment of him or refuse to play for them, but his heart and desire to perform for Liverpool, if he is selected, will not be as strong as it has been in the past. The last thing Liverpool fans will want to see is lacklustre and heartless performances from important players. That is not a dig at Mascherano’s professionalism, but if he is truly unhappy at the club and Hodgson ends up repeatedly telling the media that the player is ‘not in the right frame of mind’ (as he did prior to the clash with Manchester City), Mascherano’s displays on the pitch will suffer. Therefore it is in the best interests of Liverpool and Mascherano to get this resolved as quickly as possible, and that may well mean making a compromise on the value of the player.

It is easy to understand Hodgson’s position in this situation, and it is not unreasonable of him to expect Barcelona to pay a decent price for the Argentine, but £25-30 million is an unlikely fee given the circumstances. Liverpool do not have the luxury of being able to freely spend millions on new recruits without selling first, and are obviously keen to get the true value for the player. However, Liverpool could do a lot worse than considering a swap deal involving Aleksander Hleb, who already has Premier League experience with Arsenal.

Even short-term, a swap loan deal could turn out to be a good piece of business for Liverpool. Having completed the acquisition of Juventus midfielder Christian Poulson, the possible arrival of Hleb would compensate for the departures of Mascherano and £20 million Italian flop Alberto Aquilani, who is reported to be joining Juventus with a view to a permanent return to Italy.

How much do you think Barcelona should pay for Javier Mascherano? Would Aleksander Hleb be a good signing for Liverpool?

As August 31st approaches, it seems as if the rumours surrounding Anfield continue. Dirk Kuyt is the latest high profile star who Inter Milan seem to have on their radar. Despite Inter Milan presidant Massimo Moratti apparently stating that Inter would not be making any bids for Liverpool players, it is looking like a Javier Mascherano situation all over again.

It is clear that Rafa Benitez is looking to add reinforcements to his squad, despite Inter’s impressive 3-1 win over Roma in the Italian Super Cup at the weekend and Kuyt is a Benitez type player. He would provide attacking as well as defensive qualities that Benitez likes in his players. However the stumbling block once agin will be a fee. Like with Mascherano, Inter believe that they can use Benitez’s influence to turn Kuyt’s head and pay a lower fee than the player is valued at. Like Mascherano, Hodgson will remain firm in his valuation of his key players and like Mascherano unless Hodgson gets an offer in the region of 15 million for Kuyt he will no be going anywhere.

As for Javier Mascherano it looks like his Anfield days are numbered. After refusing to play last night it seems he will be on the way out. Barcelona have submitted a bid of £12.2m with some suggesting the deal also includes former Arsenal player Alexander Hleb and defender Martin Caceres. But Liverpool are wanting £25m cash up-front with no players involved. Inter wont meet that valuation of the player and Hodgeson has already stated he would be prepared to lose Mascherano on a free in two years rather than sell him at a reduced fee.

In terms of possible new signing’s a striker is looking like the main area Roy is looking to strenghten. After seemingly missing out on Marseille bound Remy, Peter Crouch’s name keeps popping up, with Harry Redknapp looking desperate to add a forward to his side and no takers for Robbie Keane with the price tag on his head a bid from Liverpool for Crouch, a player who Hodgson tried to sign during his time at Fulham would not be suprising. Add to that the situation surround Crouch’s personal life, a move back up north, where Miss Abbey Clancy is from could well be a logical choice to repair his relationship. The rest of the Liverpool squad is taking shape and only if players do move on will Roy look to bring in alternatives.

“At the moment we are considering loaning him to an Italian club.

“I didn’t want to use him tonight in case the loan goes through because for Aquilani it’s very important this year that he plays regular football, every week as the number one man on the team sheet.

“I can’t promise him that here so if a loan move to Italy could help him in that respect it might be good for all parties. It would certainly be what he needs, it would certainly protect the value of the player and when he does return to Liverpool no doubt we will see the Aquilani that we signed before he came here injured last year.”

Clubs interested in the ‘little Prince’ include Napoli mainly and although Aquilani’s agent has denied it to date, it now looks likely that the diminutive midfielder may be on his way out of Anfield.

Signed by Rafa Benitez last season to replace Xabi alonso, the Italian struggled with injuries and it comes as no surprise that the new manager is planning to get shut of him.

Roy Hodgson may be about to sign Ola Toivenen. The Swedish International who plays his club football with PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch League is linked with a €5 million move to Anfield with Roy having watched him in the midweek International match between Scotland and Sweden, but may have to fight it out with Tottenham as boss Harry Redknapp is also said to be keeping an eye on him.

The 24 year old striker has made an impressive start to the new season with 5 goals in just 2 appearances and could be the ideal signing that Liverpool need upfront to bolster our attcking opiotons this season.

Other news is that Daniel Agger is out of the reckoning for our Europa League home game against Trabonspor at Anfield due to concussion following his bang to the head against Aresenal and want-away midfield mopper-up Mascherano still wants to go but nobody has put a firm bid in for him yet.

Masch has a calf-injury so he won’t play tonight against the Turks (racist remark?),
But Hodgson still has a strong squad to choose from with maybe new signing Christen Poulson possibly making his debut in midfield for the Reds.

So do you think this man will solve our short-comings upfront, leave a comment below.

It’s believed Hodgson has now contacted West Ham about Cole’s availability with the Hammers prepared to do business if a £12m bid is tabled.

However, Liverpool are relying on the money from the sale of Javier Mascherano to Inter Milan to fund new signings and that deal is being held up as Inter are waiting for Man City to complete a deal for Mario Balotelli.

Stoke City had a £9m bid for Cole rejected this summer but it’s thought Cole would not be interested in a move to the Britannia anyway, but the striker would relish a move to Anfield should the two clubs strike a deal.

Roy Hodgson is anxious to add more firepower to his squad before the start of the new season and hopes he can persuade Harry Rednapp to release the England striker from his team.

It is believed that that Crouchy is willing to return to his former club and has the full support of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, in fact, they are both urging the manager to make the bid.

Would you like to see Crouch back at Anfield?

If we can’t get Luke Young from Villa then Martin Kelly looks a fine prospect wth injury-prone Fabio Aurelio able to deputise in his absence.

Before the 2009/2010 football season finished speculation began as to whether or not certain players would remain at their teams. Cesc Fabregas has been hitting the headlines all summer because of the uncertainty over his future. The 23-year-old central midfielder has been with Arsenal since he was 16 and is now the team captain but has been linked with a move to Barcelona repeatedly. Cesc has been a driving force in the Arsenal midfield and played a major role in the 09/10 campaign until he got injured in April.

Along with Fabregas, a lot of rumours have been thrown around regarding Fernando Torres and his future at Anfield. Liverpool did not have the strongest season and failed to qualify for the Champions League after finishing 7th in the league. This resulted in Rafael Benitez being replaced by Fulham’s Roy Hodgson as manager. Torres joined Liverpool in July 2007 from Atletico but has been linked with a move to Chelsea or Manchester City this summer.

It was never a secret that one of the main things that drew Fernando to Liverpool was Rafael Benitez and now that he has gone, the rumour mill went into overdrive that he would not remain either especially considering there would be no Champions League football. However, Fernando has today publicly spoken and committed his future to the Reds for the foreseeable future. He is still recovering from the abductor injury he picked up during the world cup final against the Netherlands but says he is dedicated to the club and the fans and is looking forward to the challenges which the new season brings.

Fabregas is yet to publicly pledge his allegiance to either Arsenal or Barcelona. The rumours are still as strong as ever, Cesc has just returned to England and will face his Arsenal team-mates and fans today. Arsene Wenger has said it is up to Cesc himself to end all the speculation and decide what he wants to do. Is it not time that Cesc follows his fellow Spanish colleague Torres’ example and ends all this uncertainty once and for all?

Is it right that Cesc has let this go on for so long? Is it fair that he has put Arsenal fans and the club through so much indecision?

Here is a round-up of all the latest transfer news doing the rounds in today’s papers. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd and Tottenham all feature as they try and finalise their squads ahead of the new season.

Young Liverpool Move Collapses

Luke Young’s move from Aston Villa to Liverpool has collapsed, according to the Sun. A deal looked almost certain after the two clubs agreed a cut-price £2.5m fee, and the 31 year-old full-back remained in England as the Villa squad flew out to Portugal to continue their pre-season preparations. But Young and Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson couldn’t strike a deal and the transfer now looks dead.

Tottenham To Make £4m Bellamy Bid

The Daily Mail claims that Tottenham will table a £4m bid for Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy. Harry Redknapp is a known admirer of the Welshman’s and is keen to add to his strikeforce ahead of next season, and with Manchester City having to offload around 10 players to meet the new 25-man Premier League squad rules, wheeler-dealer Harry smells a bargain.

United Keen To Land Next Schmeichel

Manchester United are reportedly looking to strike a deal for goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard, according to Sky Sports News. Lindegaard currently plays for Norweigen side Aalesunds and has been in fine form, prompting some to name him the next Peter Schmeichal. The 26-year-old is expected to move on to bigger and better things soon and United are believed to see him as a long-term successor to Edwin Van der Sar.

Schwarzer Still Gunners No.1 Target

Fulham goalkeeper is still Arsenal’s main target, despite rumours the Gunners had turned their attention to other players. Several sources claim Arsene Wenger will make a move for Caliari’s Federico Marchetti, while others suggest a move for Ajax’s Maarten Stekelenburg could be on the cards. But the news today is that the Gunners still want to strike a deal for Schwarzer and are prepared to go as high as £3m to get their man.

Chelsea Close-In on Ramires

Chelsea are believed to be close to wrapping-up the signing of Benfica midfielder Ramires in a £17m deal, according to the Daily Star. Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti is keen for the deal to be concluded before his squad fly out to Germany on Saturday as part of their pre-season tour and officials are doing all they can to make it happen.

So there is your latest dose of transfer rumours. Please take them all with a pinch of salt and remember it’s just speculation at this point!

Reports today suggest that defender Luke Young could be on his way to Anfield. The Reds have offered £2.75m for the former England full-back, a fee which has been accepted by Aston Villa. Martin O’Neill confirmed that there was interest in the 31-year-old and told Avfc.com :

There has been an offer from a football club, which Luke is mulling over and if it doesn’t materialize then he would also join us [in Portugal] because he needs to play some football soon.

Young, who become known as ‘Mr Consistent’ at previous club Middlesbrough, had an impressive first season at Villa and quickly became a fans’ favourite. In 2009, however, he only started in 14 league games after losing his favoured right-back position to Carlos Cuellar. His year was also greatly affected by the death of his 17-year-old brother Andre, last August.

Roy Hodgson has been impressed by the versatility of the former Charlton captain and tried to sign him earlier this year whilst manager of Fulham. Young is comfortable in both full-back positions and he can provide cover for Glen Johnson as well as taking over on the left. This is a position where Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements, following the sale of Emiliano Insua, and Fabio Aurelio’s exit on a free transfer.

Would you be happy to see Luke Young sign for Liverpool?

Roy Hodgson has made the left back position his priority after the £4.5m sale of Emiliano Insua to Fiorentina, along with the departures of Andrea Dossena and Fabio Aurelio, left him with no recognised left-back to choose from.

Now it seems Drenthe, who can also play as a left sided midfielder, will be the man to fill the void after claiming on his Facebook page that he will soon be joining Liverpool.

“I will soon be joining Liverpool FC. I hope I will have a good season, he said.

The 23-year-old former Dutch international has seen his playing time limited at Real Madrid following his move from Feyenoord three years ago, appearing in just 46 games and has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeau for some time.

***Since this article was published it became apparent that the Facebook was page in-fact NOT Drenthe’s personal page but a fansite page***

Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart has claimed that he would find it ‘impossible to turn down’ the offer of first team football from either Chelsea or Liverpool, and describing reported interest from the Premiership duo as ‘very flattering’.

Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart has claimed that he would find it ‘impossible to turn down’ the offer of first team football from either Chelsea or Liverpool, and describing reported interest from the Premiership duo as ‘very flattering’.

The Dutch playmaker has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeau for over two years now, with the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United all credited with interest in the past. However, more recent reports have linked Chelsea and Liverpool with moves for the 27-year-old and Van der Vaart has hinted now may be the time for a move in order to secure first team football, something that he has failed to find at Madrid.

Van der Vaart has pledged not to play for another Spanish club, so a move to the Premier League could be on the cards and the player has opened the doors to either Chelsea or Liverpool should they offer him first team opportunities.

Van der Vaart told the Daily Star Sunday: “I have heard of the interest from Liverpool and Chelsea – and that is very flattering,”

“If either of them were willing to offer me first-team football, I will be honest that it would be very hard for me to not listen to what they had to say.

“I think I have the relationship with Madrid where they understand my position and would let me hold talks.

“I expect the majority of transfers to be concluded in the next two weeks, and if Chelsea or Liverpool wanted to talk with me I would at the very least listen to what they have to say.

“They are both giants, and if they could offer first-team football it may prove impossible to turn down.

“I wouldn’t be willing to play for any clubs in Spain out of respect for Madrid, so in my eyes the only other place to go would be the Premier League.

“It’s the only league that competes with the standard of La Liga.”

With Liverpool lacking in options following the sales of Fabio Aurelio and more recently the departure of Emiliano Insua, The Reds have reportedly turned their attention to Wayne Bridge. Speculation is growing that the former Chelsea and Southampton player is on his way out of Manchester City, after it was recently revealed that the Manchester club have captured the signature of Serbian left-back Aleksandar Kolarov for £17million.

It is no secret that Bridge, aged 29, has endured a problematic season. Whether this is due to a combination of irregular football and external matters or simply being unable to adjust to the demands and pressure placed upon his shoulders, is open to debate. At Manchester City he has struggled for both form and fitness and not to mention the psychological affects of the whole John Terry affair. At previous club Chelsea, despite winning a number of trophies, at no point did Bridge even come close to wrestling the left-back position away from Ashley Cole.

I have no hesitation in stating that Bridge enjoyed his best spell of football at Southampton, where he even managed a run of 113 consecutive games for the club, an impressive tally for any player at any level. Now, there’s no doubt in my mind that if he can rekindle some of the passion and consistency he showed at Southampton, he could potentially be a welcome asset to Roy Hodgson’s squad. But, and this is a big but, he becomes 30 next month, so age wise he could be considered a bit of a gamble. However, a change of scenery may just be the antidote that Bridge needs to recapture some of the form he showed at Southampton and on the rare occasions he was given an opportunity at Chelsea.

It would be interesting to hear if you Liverpool fans would welcome a move for the Man City left-back? Or alternatively, who you think would be an adequate replacement for the recent departures?

Ferguson has been keeping an eye on the Standard Liege star for over a year now and even wrote him a letter of support after Defour suffered his foot injury. It is believed Fergie will step up his interest after reports emerged that new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson was also lining up a bid for the 22-year-old.

Defour’s contract with Liege expires in 2013 and his agent confirmed United’s interest, but also revealed clubs all over Europe were keeping track of his client.

Joe Cole has turned his back on London and Champions League football after signing a four-year contract with Liverpool. Both Arsenal and Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move for Cole and it was thought the 28-year-old would opt to stay in London after recently having a baby and wanting to stay close to his roots.

Cole became hot-property after leaving Chelsea last month after failing to agree a new contract extension. Carlo Ancelotti blamed ‘financial reasons’ behind Cole’s departure and the England winger has been linked with big-money moves to some of Europe’s elite over the past few weeks. Arsenal and Spurs became front-runners in the race for Cole’s signature, but he has chosen to move to Merseyside after agreeing a four-year contract worth a reported £90,000pw and will undergo a medical in the next 48 hours.

Some cynics will say he has chosen money ahead of football, after-all the deal he has signed with Liverpool was the most financially lucrative on offer, and he has chosen to go to a club that will be playing in the Europa League next season.

But Cole said last month he would chose the club who could offer him the chance to play in the centre of midfield and wanted a manager who had faith in him. No doubt both Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp would have been great managers to work under and both are renowned for being able to bring the best out of players by instilling confidence, but it’s debatable whether Cole would have been able to force his way into either Arsenal or Tottenham’s central midfield starting line-up each week.

Liverpool are no doubt a massive club with a rich history and under the guidance of Roy Hodgson, he must feel this was the right move for him and his family. Whether it’s the best move for his career is another thing though.

With Cole now back from holiday, a final decision is due within the next 48 hours and it’s expected that he will choose Liverpool with bookmakers even suspending betting on the move over the weekend. This after new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson confirming he had held talks with the midfielder although he confirmed no deal had yet been struck.

Until any deal is officially announced, Arsenal and Tottenham remain in the hunt for Cole’s signature. West Ham are also interested, and have offered the best deal financially, but with no European football it’s unlikely the England winger will return to Upton Park.

By Siobhan McCall

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has made no secret of his desire to bring more British talent to Anfield, and with the new Premier League ruling that requires all clubs to include a minimum of eight home-grown players in their squad of twenty-five, the issue has become all the more pressing. So it’s no surprise to hear that Manchester City’s Micah Richards is the latest in a long line of English stars to be linked with the club. Rumours today suggest that the Reds are ready to enter a £15m battle with Spurs for the signature of the twenty-two-year old defender who broke into the City first team when he was seventeen and has eleven England caps.

The reason behind much of this transfer speculation is Jerome Boateng’s arrival at Eastlands in a £10.4m deal from Bundesliga side SV Hamburg. The German international, who started five out of his country’s seven games in the 2010 World Cup, is a versatile defender; he played in a variety of positions across the back four for his previous club and became first choice left-back during the later stages in South Africa. With Micah Richards being similarly versatile and failing to cement his favoured centre-back role in Roberto Mancini’s side last season , there’s a feeling that he may be pushed aside in favour of the young German, especially since Richards failed to even make England’s provisional World Cup squad whilst Boateng came back with a bronze medal.

It seems, however, that Mancini is unwilling to sell as he sees Micah as one for the future and a club source described him as;

A key part of Roberto’s plans.

This is understandable as City are not under any financial pressure, and they are going to want to hold on to players like Richards, who have shown potential and are a strong backup for the first choices. Considering the criticism he’s received about being lazy and lacking concentration, he still featured in twenty-three league games for the side which finished fifth, suggesting that his manager does indeed have faith in him. I think it will be up to Micah to instigate a move and perhaps the main inspiration for this would be to secure his place as an England regular in time for Euro 2012, having only featured in the under 21‘s over the last year.

Although he’s one of those typical strong defenders who probably could play well alongside Martin Skrtel and would be good for a powerful header, something the Red’s have missed after Sami Hyypia’s departure to Bayer Leverkusen, I don’t think the defence should be top of Liverpool’s priorities at this moment. It’s not so much to do with his quality but more the cost of a potential transfer, with figures of around £15m being quoted to secure his services. Last season, away from home, Liverpool had the third best defence and the number of goals they conceded at Anfield wasn’t too disheartening either. But goals scored is another story, in particular their away record of 18, only one better than relegated Burnley and 17 off the pace of champions Chelsea.

It’s been well documented that Hodgson may not have much of a budget this summer and if this is the case, he needs to reinforce the areas that need it most, and under such circumstances spending around £15m on a defender, who isn’t particularly attack-minded and who might not even become a first team regular, doesn’t sound like the wisest of moves. Richards has been playing right-back for City and Liverpool have got their own Englishman, Glen Johnson, who showed signs of real creativity last year, to play this position and I believe he still has a lot to offer. What Liverpool need are reinforcements for the midfield, in particular a player who can become a regular down the left flank and more than anything a strike partner for Fernando Torres. I’d be happy to have just one or two signings of this mould and leave the defence as it is, unless Hodgson can secure someone he sees potential in, on the cheap, or if he can do some great haggling with his North West rivals.

By Siobhan McCall

Barcelona’s well documented interest in Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas has dominated transfer news this summer, but it looks as if the Catalan side may be ready to give up their pursuit of the Gunners captain and turn their attention elsewhere. As reported by the Metro, the La Liga Champions could be set to challenge Internazionale for the signature of Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano. The midfielder has made clear his desire for a move away from Anfield, and Liverpool are reportedly looking for an offer of around £35m, a fee which is substantially cheaper than what Arsenal are asking for their World Cup winner.

Throughout the last few weeks, Inter Milan have appeared the most likely destination  for the Argentine skipper, especially since Rafael Benitez is the new coach of the Serie A Champions. Mascherano has made no secret of his desire to link up with his former Liverpool boss and earlier this week his agent Walter Tamer described how;

The strongest team in the world is after him, where there are various compatriots who he has got to know playing for Argentina, and they are coached by a manager to whom he is tied by personal affection.

Compatriot Javier Zanetti also issued a plea to Mascherano to join the Nerazzurri, declaring;

He’s a great player, he retrieves a lot of balls. He would suit Inter.

In the past, however, the Argentine has spoken of his wife’s homesickness and used her unhappiness as the reason for him wanting to leave Merseyside. This could merely be an excuse, but if it is the truth, a move to Spain would be a better option than a country with another new language to learn. Barcelona, who are looking for a defensive midfield replacement for Yaya Toure, will be hoping that this factor may swing the transfer in their favour. It almost did last year, when the Catalans first declared their interest in taking Mascherano to the Nou Camp. Rafa Benitez put a stop to any such move, stating that he would not allow his midfield man to move for anything less than £50m. It has recently been revealed that Barcelona have had to take out a £130m loan to combat their financial problems and this is probably one of the key reasons, alongside the prospect of having a tough holding midfielder supporting Xavi and Andrés Iniesta, why they may look to Mascherano instead of Cesc Fabregas.

It appears inevitable that Liverpool’s £18.6m signing will be moving away from Merseyside, and he’ll certainly be a loss to the side as he was someone who was always ready to fight for the team, gave one hundred percent and never shied away. But when a player has expressed his desire to move on for two consecutive seasons, and the Reds can’t offer him Champions League football this time round, it’s probably best to let him go. It shouldn’t make too much difference which of these sides he signs for, as it’s unlikely that Liverpool will be facing either in the foreseeable future. Let’s hope, however, that they can secure a deal with whoever is offering the largest transfer fee, and that Roy Hodgson is able to use some of this money to strengthen his side. Rafa shouldn’t be allowed to forget that he valued Mascherano at such a high price last season and there should certainly be some negotiating for the best possible deal in Liverpool’s favour.

It remains to be seen whether Barca will put in a bid for the former West Ham man but should they do so, it’ll certainly give Mascherano a lot to think about. Well, the question of whether he should link up with 2009’s treble winners and current Spanish title holders, or 2010’s treble winners and Serie A champions for the past five years? It’s a hard life for some footballers…

Javier Mascherano’s agent Walter Tamer has this week fuelled further speculation linking the Argentine with a move to Inter Milan. Recent reports have linked Liverpool’s tenacious midfielder with a move to the San Siro, reuniting him with ex-Red’s boss Rafael Benitez. The 26-year olds agent has claimed that Mascherano would

“jump at the chance of a reunion (with Benitez) at Inter”.

His agent went on to reveal that Mascherano has not spoken to new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson since his appointment last week, nor has he spoke with the club itself. The tireless midfielder has won 61 caps for his country to date and was part of Argentina’s Olympic gold medal winning side in 2008. Tamer has stated that for Mascherano to be linked with Inter has a

“last season it was European champions Barcelona that wanted him and this year it’s Inter (Milan), the current Champions League winners”.

In July of last year, ex- Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez reportedly turned down a multi-million pound offer from Spanish Champions Barcelona for the Argentine.

Mascherano is under contact at Anfield until June 2012.Tamer admitted that this was a potential obstacle for the Nerazzurri in agreeing a deal for the sedulous midfielder. Inter will be expected to fork out in the region of £35 million the Argentine’s services. Mascherano has made 100 league appearances to date for Liverpool, who welcome Arsenal to Anfield on August 14th to kick off their 2010/11 Premier League campaign.

Steven Gerrard will not be heading to the Spanish capital according to Real Madrid’s transfer consultant Ernesto Bronzetti.

Bronzetti explained that Gerrard’s age and valuation has sincerely deterred Florentino Perez’s interest and will no longer pursue for his services. The Anfield skipper’s future has come into serious doubt following his clubs failure to quality for the Champions League as well as their failure to bridge the gap on the Premier League summit.

Jose Mourinho is now at the forefront of a new dynasty at Real after leaving his post at Internazionale where he steered them to European success, ironically at the Santiago Bernabeu in May. The ‘Special One’ tried to lure Gerrard to Stamford Bridge in the spring of 2005 after he handed in a transfer request, only to reverse his decision soon after.

Now it seems that the 30 year old will not be linking up with the Portuguese tactician any time soon as Bronzetti confirmed that the hierarchy of the Spanish giants are no longer interested, primarily due to the hefty price tag hovering over the midfielder’s head.

“The president does not agree with Gerrard because he is 30 and Perez doesn’t want to know.” Bronzetti told GR Parlamento.

“Plus, Liverpool asked for €70m.”

Mourinho is eager to add a player in the mould of Gerrard to his collection of superstars after the club completed the signing of Benfica’s Angel di Maria.

Andres Iniesta has said that Fernando Torres will decide on his Anfield future in the next few weeks. The two Spaniards are still basking in their glory after Spain lifted their first FIFA World Cup on Sunday thanks to Iniesta’s dramatic winner late on in the second period of extra time against the Netherlands.

The Spaniards were greeted with jubilant scenes upon their arrival back home as over a million people took to the streets of Madrid adorning their nation’s colours greeting their heroes as they paraded the eighteen carat gold prize. Torres who had a disappointing tournament personally due a lack of influence and goals suffered yet another setback as he injured his groin in the dying embers of the final after he came on as a substitute.

Now with the World Cup over ‘El Nino’ now has the opportunity to weigh up his options and his international team mate Iniesta believes he will be able to sort out his future after a holiday with his family.

“Fernando was fully focused on Spain and we didn’t even talk about his future until last night.” he told the Daily Express.

“He is going to take a break with his wife and daughter, speak to Liverpool and take things from there.”

The little Catalonian magician also revealed the special praise Torres has received from yet another compatriot David Villa who has described the Liverpool man as the most complete striker in world football.

“Any club that has him is lucky to have him. David Villa says Torres is the most complete striker in the world and his future will be decided in the next two weeks.”

Torres is set to undertake a scan in the next 48 hours to reveal the extent of his injury. It is reported that he may miss the start of the new Premier League season.

By Siobhan McCall.

Their seemingly endless pot of cash has already secured the signature of David Silva, and it looks as if Manchester City could also be ready to launch a bid for his international teammate, Fernando Torres. Well at least according to Harry Redknapp. When asked by talkSPORT whether his Champions League bound team were considering making a bid for the Liverpool striker, the Spurs boss admitted that they could not compete with the financial might of City and he was quoted by the Metro as saying;

They’re in for Torres – and if they end up getting him and one or two others then they can do anything. It’s going to make it even harder to make the top four again next season, that’s for definite.

Rumours of the Eastlands side’s interest in the Spanish forward have been rife for the past few seasons. This summer, however, the majority of the speculation has linked Torres with a move to Chelsea, who can offer Champions League football and a rather glittering trophy cabinet. Not to mention that a potential linkup between Didier Drogba and Torres could be lethal. Should Torres move on from Liverpool, fans would expect that the lure of playing on Europe’s highest stage and title-winning credentials would be the motivation, neither of which City can currently supply and El Nino doesn’t strike me as the type of player who is primarily driven by money, so I think it would take a huge bid for Liverpool to sell him to the side who only finished two places ahead of them last season.

Reports today have suggested that Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti is planning a £30 million coup. Whether this is just media speculation or Chelsea are going to test the resolve of a club with a much publicised £350m debt remains to be seen but I’m sure many Reds would be bitterly disappointed if Liverpool let their star striker go for this amount.  Torres came to Anfield in 2007 in a deal worth around £20 million and so for Liverpool to make only a £10m profit, considering Torres prolific goal scoring rate, doesn’t seem the most sound of business. Especially considering that Arsenal are asking around £60m for their captain, Cesc Fabregas. The Gunners may not have the same financial woes as Liverpool, but both players are key assets to their Premiership sides and will return from the World Cup, although perhaps with winners medals, knowing that, on an individual level, they did not have the best of tournaments. Arsenal seem intent on pricing Barcelona out of a move and I hope that Liverpool will do the same for Torres, especially since Chairman Martin Broughton has stated that;

We don’t have any desire or need to sell players in order to pay down the debt.

Torres is among the best in the world and with Liverpool’s current situation, he’s in the irreplaceable category. None of the other top strikers in Europe, even if they are looking for a move away from their current side, are going to be most attracted to a team in the Europa League. Liverpool might have the illustrious history, but on current form they are not the most appealing side, and should they lose Steven Gerrard and Torres, their short-term allure can only get worse. So if what Broughton is saying is true, I hope Liverpool do everything they can to hold onto El Nino, and I’m sure he’s professional enough to give his all for one more season. Torres has yet to make any official comment on the speculation surrounding him, despite the many quotes ambiguously linked to him, so lets hope that, in this case, no news is good news.

But Mascherano has seemingly made up his mind and is determined to leave Liverpool this summer with a ‘well placed source’ telling Soccernet;

“Javier is looking, for sure, to leave Liverpool,”

“There is no doubt that at the moment he wants to go. Await developments, as Javier has made up his mind.”

The only stumbling block may be Liverpool’s asking price, and with long-term admirer’s Barcelona in financial trouble, the most likely destination will be a reunion with former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez at Inter Milan.

New Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has met with both Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher to discuss their futures and is confident neither will be moving from Anfield this summer. Hodgson also confirmed he will seek talks with star striker Fernando Torres when the World Cup is over.

Hodgson met with Gerrard and Carragher at Melwood just hours after being officially announced as the new Anfield supremo and was very pleased at the positive nature of the talks. Speaking to LFC Weekly, he said:

“I think they went splendidly, I was very happy to meet the players and, of course, Kenny who I already know so well.

“I was delighted to see how positive they are. Everybody is looking forward to the new season.”

He added: “Obviously Steven and Jamie are the playing heartbeat of the club and it’s very important we keep people like that with us.

Hodgson went on to suggest Liverpool are bracing themselves for bids for Gerrard amid speculation that Jose Mourinho is keen to take the England midfielder to Madrid this summer, but is confident he can hold on to his captain.

“I anticipate there might be a situation where other big clubs will try and sign Steven, but he gave no indication that he wanted to leave.

“Nobody at the club wants him to go so I will be doing my utmost to make sure he stays. I am confident he will.”

Hodgson is also keen to hold talks with Spanish striker Torres who is still competing at the World Cup after his team reached the final last night with a 1-0 victory over Germany. His manager is aware of speculation linking him with a move away from Anfield and understands the concern of the Liverpool fans, but insists he will do all he can to keep Torres on Merseyside.

“Fernando is a wonderful striker and I understand the fans’ concerns about his future,” he said.

“Unfortunately with the World Cup still on, I won’t be able to meet him face to face for another few weeks. That’s just circumstance and you won’t hear me complaining about it.

“When I do meet him, I will be doing everything I possibly can to convince him that Liverpool is the place to be.

“If he sees progress, I am confident that he won’t want to go anywhere else. I think he understands the club and the city.”

The race for Joe Cole’s signature took another twist today after Metro.co.uk claim the player will reject the advances of Liverpool in favour of a move to either Arsenal or Tottenham. Several of Europe’s elite have been linked with a move for free agent Cole after he was released by Chelsea after being unable to agree a contract extension.

Reports over the past few days have suggested Liverpool were right in the mix and new manager Roy Hodgson was keen to speak with the playmaker in an attempt to persuade him his future lay in Merseyside despite Liverpool being unable to offer him Champions League football next season.

But it seems Cole would prefer to remain in London leaving North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham to battle it out. The Gunners are understood to be in pole position after offering Cole a £115,000-a-week contract. However, Tottenham have got a package together themselves that would include several bonuses on top of a £60,000-a-week basic wage.

Cole is currently on holiday with his family and has left his agent to deal with all negotiations until he returns next week. He is wanting to take his time over what will be his last major contract but has previously suggested his decision will be based on footballing not financial factors.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Fernando Torres has filled the back pages today, with Soccernet claiming to have a ’source’ that tells them Roman Abramovich has flown out to South Africa to try and complete a deal, while the Daily Mail believes Chelsea have tabled an opening bid of £40m for the Spanish striker. Either way, it’s not encouraging reading for the Anfield faithful.

Roman Flies to South Africa for Torres

Soccernet claim to have a well-placed source who says Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has flown to South Africa in a bid to push through a deal to sign Fernando Torres from Liverpool, with the Russian willing to pay up to £55m to get his man.

Liverpool value Torres at nearer £70m and new manager Roy Hodgson is currently evaluating the futures of several big-name stars at Anfield. The player is focusing on the World Cup with a Semi-Final to look forward to on Wednesday, but with the tournament drawing to a close, Soccernet believes talks are already underway. Their source said:

“Abramovich has authorised the bid of £50 million, and he’s not expected to go much higher than that … [but] I would think he might go to £55 million.”Without any other creditable bidder, he sees no reason to go any higher. It’s quite clear that Liverpool could get more from Manchester City, and the player could earn more from Manchester City, but the player doesn’t want to go there. He wants Champions League football and the chance to win the major honours which he can do at Chelsea.”

Chelsea submit £40m Torres bid

However, the Daily Mail claim that Chelsea have already tabled their opening bid for Torres, believed to be £40m. Liverpool are likely to demand far more for their star man but Roman Abramovich is willing to back Carlo Ancelotti to land his top target, and would pay anything up to £70m.

New Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has already admitted he can not guarentee either Torres or Gerrard will remain at Anfield this summer and due to their financial state, Liverpool would find it hard to resist a substantial offer from Chelsea for Torres.

Fortunes proved mixed for the Liverpool stars involved in the World Cup quarter-finals. Want-away Javier Mascherano and winger Maxi Rodriguez will be packing their bags after a 4-0 thrashing by Germany, a result that looks set to lead to the resignation of coach Diego Maradona. However Dutch midfielders Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel should be in a more celebratory mood after the Oranje booked their place in the semis, courtesy of a 2-1 victory over customary favourites Brazil. And Spain’s narrow 1-0 defeat of Paraguay ensured that there will at least one European team in the final, as David Villa’s fifth goal of the tournament set up a mouth-watering semi against in-form Germany. Villa may have scored the winner, but the headlines are again dominated by another goal-free game for Fernando Torres.

Although Ryan Babel has been unable to get a game for the Netherlands, something which will perhaps further convince the twenty-three-year-old that his future lies away from the Red’s substitute bench, the story couldn’t be more different for Dirk Kuyt who is shaping up to be Liverpool’s star of South Africa. Kuyt, who has played the full ninety minutes for the Dutch in four out of their five fixtures, and scored against Denmark in the group stages, has formed a formidable partnership with Wesley Sneijder. A pull-back against Slovakia allowed Sneijder to stroke the ball home and seal a 2-1 victory, whilst even more crucially, it was Kuyt’s flick on that enabled the Inter Milan midfielder to head home the winner against Brazil.

Kuyt has also linked up well with Rafael Van der Vaart, one of Liverpool’s top transfer targets, and the thought of having the two Dutch midfielders occupying the right and left flanks of the team will be a tantalizing prospect for many Reds. The semi-finals draw has paired them against Uruguay, the only remaining South American side, and Kuyt and the Netherlands will really fancy their chances of getting to their first final since 1978, especially as Oscar Tabarez’s side will be without star player Luis Suarez. The three-goal forward will be serving a ban for his controversial last gasp hand-ball against Ghana.

None of the World Cup’s predicted superstars, with the exception of Villa and Snejider, lived up to their billing, and perhaps without the exploits of Villa, whose goal tally looks set to earn him the golden boot, Fernando Torres would be joining fellow non-scorers Wayne Rooney and Lionel Messi on the plane home. However, Torres’ poor showing may prove a blessing in disguise for Liverpool as an outstanding tournament would have made his move away from Anfield all but certain. This morning Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque declared himself unconcerned about Torres’ poor goal-scoring form, stating that

‘we are satisfied with his work and his attitude and we are hoping for the best of him in our next matches.’

It should not be forgotten that by this point in Euro 2008, Torres had scored only once but ended up winning the tournament for Spain with his goal against Germany. Torres is getting fitter every game, after being sidelined for six weeks at the end of last season, and should Spain reach the World Cup final for the first time in their history, it wouldn’t be surprising if there’s a repeat of 2008.

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who has yet to play for Spain in South Africa, also came in for great praise from first choice stopper Iker Casillas after Reina reportedly told him where Oscar Cardozo would place his penalty, having faced the Benfica striker in last season’s Europa League. In what proved to be a few minutes of madness, Paraguay were awarded and missed a penalty, seconds later Spain were given one of their own and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso to be forced to retake his well placed spot-kick. His second effort was comfortably saved by Justo Villar, who then appeared to foul Cesc Fabregas but Spain’s pleas for a second penalty were waved away by referee Carlos Batres.

The team going out of the quarters with their reputation most in tatters is Argentina. Germany had already put four past Australia and a disorganised England, but no one could have predicted they would outplay a side, touted as potential champions, in such a masterful way. Captain Mascherano, although always ready to tough tackle, failed, along with the back four, to quell the attacking prowess of Klose and Lukas Podolski, and lost the midfield battle against the outstanding Bastian Schweinsteiger. Maxi, who hasn’t had a particularly strong tournament, also struggled in midfield and although he had creative ideas throughout Argentina’s matches, was not able to translate this into any goals. First on the agenda when Mascherano arrives back in Liverpool will to be to sort out his future. This looks increasingly likely to be at Barcelona, especially with Manchester City signing defensive midfielder Yaya Toure from the Catalan side. Meanwhile Maxi, after starting all five games for Argentina, will be looking to impress new manager Roy Hodgson and cement his place in the Red’s starting eleven.

Speculation has recently emerged that Jose Mourinho is set to offer Rafael van der Vaart and Fernando Gago in part exchange for Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard. Let’s face it – Its not going to happen. It has become clear in recent years that the prospect of an increased salary was never before enough to draw the tenacious midfielder from his role as captain at Anfield. So why now?

Despite their disappointing Premier League campaign last term, Liverpool have it all to play for going into the 2010/11 season with Jamie Carragher stating last week that the clubs “main priority” is to make it into the Champions League. Meaning they would need to once again join the race along with the likes of Man City, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham if they are to challenge for a top 4 finish.

Many on Merseyside feel that newly appointed manager Roy Hodgson is the right man to take Liverpool forward as the club attempts to build on the dismal performances of last term. Newly appointed Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has been clear to state his interest in Gerrard, singling out the England midfielder as his main target this summer. The reported part exchange offer of Rafael van der Vaart and Fernando Gago will leave Hodgson with room for thought, albeit any fan on Merseyside would opt for the passion and leadership that the so-called “irreplaceable” Steven Gerrard bestows to the side.

Gerrard, who has made 366 appearances for Liverpool to date, has three years remaining on his Liverpool contract and is said to be valued in the region of £30 million. The 30-year old talisman last year signed a two-year deal on top of his previous deal which ran for another two seasons keeping him under contract at Anfield until 2013. The Liverpool skipper reiterated his desire to stay at the club in 2005 when he snubbed a multi-million pound move to Chelsea, instead opting to sign a new four year deal at Anfield. A year prior to that, Liverpool’s Michael Owen made the illustrious switch to Real Madrid for an estimated £8 million.

Liverpool fans were once again assured of Gerrard’s commitment to the club last week following a statement from Jamie Carragher. The central defender said he was “confident” that both Gerrard and Fernando Torres would “still be at the club next season”.

Real Madrid have also been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Ashley Cole whilst Liverpool are said to interested in obtaining the services of Japan’s Yashuhito Endo following the midfielder’s impressive World Cup campaign.

By Ross Mackiewicz.

Fernando Torres’s future at Anfield looks in doubt after his agent admitted that it is more than likely that the Spaniard will be seeking pastures new. The Liverpool front man who has endured a torrid World Cup on a personal level during Spain’s quest to the last four has been the subject of speculation for the past six months due to his clubs crippling debts.

As Roy Hodgson marked his arrival as the Merseyside’s new manager this week it seemed as if some of the doom and gloom that has harrowed the club for the past ten months was beginning to shift as the clubs loyal faithful begin to grasp at a new dawn under the former Inter Milan coach. Torres himself publically stated that he was delighted with the appointment and announced he will be seeking a chat with his new boss after the World Cup. However his agent Jose Antonio Martin has thrown a spanner into the works by suggesting that his client may be on the move to another Premier League outfit.

“It is very likely that Fernando Torres will stay in the Premier League, but I cannot say that it will be with Liverpool.” said Martin.

“We are working on his future but right now you cannot guarantee that he will stay with the English club.”

Martin also went onto to say that there is no chance of the 26 year old reuniting with his international striker partner David Villa at the Nou Camp. Villa signed for Barcelona prior to the finals in South Africa from Valencia for just over £27million and has been in scintillating form for his country thus far unlike his team mate who has failed to find the net as well as offering little influence during his playing time.

Chelsea and Manchester City have been heavily linked with big money moves for the former Atletico Madrid man and are the only two premier league club who could realistically afford his transfer fee. Liverpool’s chairman Martin Broughton revealed during Hodgson’s inaugural media conference last week that Torres would not be sold along with club captain Steven Gerrard. However with the clubs debts in such a catastrophic state it will be interesting to see what the owners stance will be if a huge offer is indeed to arrive from one of their rivals.

Chelsea are trying to hijack Manchester City’s move for Valencia winger David Silva, according to the players agent. City have been given permission to speak with the 24-year-old after agreeing a fee believed to be in the region of £28m with Valencia. But Chelsea are one of three clubs who have also submitted offers for the Spanish international, as they look to scupper City’s move for the highly rated winger.

Silva’s agent, Julio Llorente, has named Chelsea as one of the interested parties and hinted that if his client didn’t want to go to City then a move to Stamford Bridge could be on the cards.

“We’re weighing up offers from three clubs and one is Chelsea,” Llorente told the Daily Mail.

“If Silva doesn’t want to go to City, the transfer isn’t possible.”

These latest developments may alert fellow premiership big-boys Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool as all three have been linked with a move for Silva in the past. The Gunners have him down as a potential replacement should Cesc Fabregas leave for Barcelona, but any move for Silva is unlikely until their captains future is sorted out. Manchester United and Liverpool both remain keen but may be put off by his £28m price tag, and won’t want to enter a bidding war with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.

Liverpool have been rocked by the news that captain Steven Gerrard told Spanish press that he’s aware of Real Madrid’s offer for him and that he could be a Madrid player next season, but insists he will not make a final decision on his future until after the World Cup.

The Daily Mail reports that speaking after England’s disappointing draw with Algeria on Friday night, Gerrard told Spanish journalists:

‘It is possible that I’ll be in Madrid next season. I’m aware of the club’s offer so maybe we’ll see each other in Madrid. I can’t say anymore.
‘I’m just concentrating on the World Cup. My agent is looking after it all.’

Despite Gerrard’s reluctance to discuss his future, the Spanish giants want Liverpool to drop their valuation of the player as they look to finalise a deal. Liverpool don’t want to sell the 30-year-old but know he is unhappy with how the club is progressing, but will only consider letting their talisman go if they receive a figure close to £30m. However, Real feel that fee is excessive and believe £20m is closer to the players value.

David Silva has said the Premier League is ‘the place to be’ and has talked up a move to champions Chelsea. The much sought-after Valencia winger is away in South Africa with the Spanish squad, but took time out to discuss his future as reports circulate that he may be leaving Los Che this summer.

Silva has attracted interest from Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in recent times and boosted the premiership big-boys with the admission that he would like to play in the Premier League, but took the time to praise the West Londoners.

“Chelsea have established themselves as one of the best clubs in Europe over the last five years. They might not have the history of Real Madrid or AC Milan but they are creating their own history now. There is no reason why in the future Chelsea can’t be as decorated as Real Madrid.

“Chelsea probably have, along with Barcelona, the best squad in football and if any player joins Chelsea he knows he is going to win things.

“In players like John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba they have players who would get into any team in the world and it would be a pleasure to play with them.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Chelsea would be a great club to play for – and a club where I could fulfil my ambition of league titles and the European Cup.

“The Premier League is still the place to be, no other league in the world has six or seven Champions League quality teams.”

It is thought that it would take a fee in excess of £25m to secure the services of Silva, who started in Spain’s shock 1-0 defeat to Switzerland in their World Cup opener.
