Arsenal Could Yet Sign Midfielder As Boss Dismisses Talk Of Done Deal With Man Utd
Arsenal could yet win the race for Morgan Schneiderlin as Southampton boss Ronald Koeman says they are yet to receive a serious offer from Manchester United
As the summer transfer window gets set to open for business, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Southampton are yet to receive a bid from Manchester United for Morgan Schneiderlin….
Arsenal could yet win the race for Morgan Schneiderlin’s signature as Southampton boss Ronald Koeman says they are yet to receive a serious offer from Manchester United despite claims the move was a ‘done deal’, according to the Mirror.
Schneiderlin has just come off the back of another excellent season at St Mary’s with his impressive displays in the middle of the park helping the South Coast club maintain a push for the top four for much of the season before eventually falling away to finish seventh.
The French international is expected to move-on this summer and despite reported interest from clubs abroad, Schneiderlin was quoted in the Daily Mail earlier this month as saying he wants to remain in England and join a club playing in the Champions League.
Arsenal were the early front-runners for his signature and as reported by the Independent last week, some bookmakers were forced to slash their odds on the midfielder moving to North London to just 1/2.
Arsene Wenger then appeared to cool his interest in the 25-year-old which paved the way for Manchester United to move into pole position with reports over the weekend suggesting Schneiderlin was on the verge of moving to Old Trafford.
The Mirror reported on Sunday that the Red Devils had met the midfielder’s representatives in Paris on Friday where a deal worth £100,000-a-week was agreed after United had supposedly had a £25m offer accepted by Southampton, and Schneiderlin was expected to be unveilled as Louis van Gaal’s latest signing this week.
The Dutch coach needs to sign another deep-lying midfielder to help ease the load on Michael Carrick as United have been overly reliant on the 34-year-old in recent years and Schneiderlin looked all-set to be the man for the job.
However, it appears those reports are a little premature as Saints boss Ronald Koeman has told the media that United are yet to make a serious offer for the Frenchman. Koeman is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“We have the situation with Morgan Schneiderlin, we will have to wait what will happen. Until now, we have not a serious bid for him from Man United.
“We will wait, but OK – that’s business that normally starts from now. It’s no problem – it’s the first day.
“We have the experience from last season – it will be not the same this season, but we are prepared for everything. I am looking forward for another good season.”
So it appears Schneiderlin isn’t as close to joining United as the press led us to believe and this could open the door for Arsenal to step-up their interest once again.
Arsene Wenger needs to bring in another holding midfielder to compete with Francis Coquelin and I think Schneiderlin would be the perfect addition for the Gunners, but so far the French boss has been reluctant to pull the trigger on a move.
That could change very quickly and the Telegraph claim that Wenger has now ended his interest in Arturo Vidal, so perhaps the Arsenal manager is now ready to turn his attention back to Schneiderlin once more.
He will have to act fast as United are still favourites to complete a deal but whoever does end up signing Schneiderlin will be getting a top player as he’s been one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League over the past two seasons.
