Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is hoping to wrap-up the £25m signing of Arsenal target Morgan Schneiderlin before the club sets-off on their pre-season tour on Monday, according to the Guardian.

Schneiderlin has been one of the most talked about players of the transfer window so far after enjoying another excellent season at Southampton where he helped them secure a seventh-placed finish in the Premier League.

Despite the prospect of playing in the Europa League with the Saints this coming campaign, the French international has expressed his desire to leave after being quoted in the Daily Mail last month as saying he wants to join an English club who play in the Champions League.

Arsenal were the early front-runners for his signature and as reported by the Independent, bookmakers were forced to slash their odds at the end of June on Schneiderlin making the move to North London this summer.

However, Arsene Wenger’s interest appears to have waned in recent weeks and that’s opened the door for Manchester United with the Mirror claiming last week that the Red Devils agreed personal terms with the midfielder following talks with his agent in Paris.

A fee is still the major sticking point but the Guardian suggest that after seeing their opening £20m offer rejected with the Saints demanding closer to £30m, United hope to finally settle on a compromise deal at £25m.

The newspaper states that while United are yet to table any official improved offer, they are confident a deal can be finalised before the squad set-off on their pre-season tour of the United States on Monday.

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman admitted earlier this week that if Schneiderlin is to be sold he hopes a deal can be sorted out quickly to give him plenty of time to bring in a replacement.

‘Everybody knows the situation of Morgan and if you can get a big move I can understand it,’ Koeman is quoted as saying by the Metro.

‘If there is any business then I hope it will be soon because it is best for the player, best for us and we have to think about ourselves if we sell the player.’

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but if Schneiderlin is going to be on the flight to California on Monday then United will have to get a fee agreed pretty quickly.

No doubt Louis van Gaal would prefer to see any new signings brought in soon to give them as much time as possible to integrate into the squad and a pre-season tour is the perfect time for a player to bond with his new team-mates.

However, at this point no fee has been agreed and you could say there is still time for Arsenal to make a late hijack attempt. I still can’t believe the Gunners are passing up the opportunity to sign Schneiderlin as I think he’d be the perfect signing for them.

It looks as though Arsene Wenger has other ideas which leaves United in pole position to snap up the 25-year-old, but they are facing a race against time to get the deal pushed through before Monday.
