Attacker Undergoes Medical After Man Utd Agree £25m Fee But Man City Make Late Move

Pedro has completed the first part of his medical after Manchester United agreed a £24.7m deal with Barcelona but Man City are eyeing a late hijack attempt

With the summer transfer window in full swing, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads for the new season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, the latest on Man Utd’s pursuit of Pedro….

Pedro-Rodriguez-Barcelona

Pedro has completed the first part of his medical after Manchester United agreed a deal worth £24.7m with Barcelona but Manchester City are eyeing a late hijack attempt, according to the Daily Star.

United have been heavily linked with a move for Pedro in recent months with Spanish outlet Sport reporting last week that Barca officials were due to arrive in Manchester this past weekend to try and trash out a deal.

It seems those negotiations went well as the Daily Star are citing a report from Marca that claims United have agreed a deal worth £24.7m and Pedro is now understood to have undergone the first part of his medical.

Any proposed deal has been delayed until after tonight’s Super Cup clash as Barcelona wanted Pedro to play against Sevilla in Tblisi after Neymar was ruled out for up to two weeks with mumps, but the newspaper suggested that a deal would then be completed on Wednesday.

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique admitted ahead of tonight’s game that Pedro’s future would be decided ‘soon’, telling reporters:

“I have never decided to pick a player or leave him out because of the transfer window.

“I would like to keep all my players through the whole season. But we have talked enough about Pedro. The solution will arrive soon.” Enrique is quoted as saying by the Daily Star

So everything looked to be in place for Pedro to play his final game for Barca this evening before saying his goodbye’s ahead of his switch to Old Trafford, where he’d arrive to replace Angel Di Maria – who joined PSG last week.

However, there could yet be a late twist in the tail as Marca have just published an update saying that Manchester City have made a late move to try and hijack their rivals deal.

The Spanish daily says that City chief – and former Barca supremo – Txiki Bergiristain has made contact with the Catalans to express their interest in signing Pedro and made it clear they’re prepared to trump United’s offer.

It’s important to note that Marca say no formal offer has been put on the table from City as yet but it looks like United may now face some stiff competition for Pedro’s signature. The big question will be whether he 28-year-old already has his heart set on a move to United or if he could still have his head turned by a possible move to the Etihad Stadium.

I’d argue that United need him far more than City and will be able to guarantee him more regular first team football – something that is important to the player after falling behind Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez in the pecking order at Barca.

One thing is for sure, whoever does end up signing Pedro will be getting an excellent player and I think any deal around £25m will prove to be a great deal in today’s over-inflated market.

Despite not always being a regular, he’s still managed to score 98 goals in 318 games for Barcelona and he’s capable of playing anywhere across the front three, so his versatility would come in very useful.

We’ll have to see how things develop but it looks like the next 24-48 hours could prove crucial, so we should know a lot more by the end of the week.
