Manchester United are ready to try and hijack Chelsea’s move for John Stones by tempting Everton with a swap deal involving out-of-favour defender Jonny Evans, according to ESPN.

Stone’s has seen his future at Goodison Park called into question this summer with Chelsea trying desperately to lure the talented centre-back to West London.

The Guardian claimed last week that Jose Mourinho is lining-up a third bid after seeing his previous £20m and £26m offers rejected by the Toffees – who are understood to be holding out for closer to £34m [via the Mirror].

Chelsea’s aggressive approach has angered Roberto Martinez as the Everton boss has recently slammed the Premier League champions for trying to unsettle his player with their public pursuit.

It seems Manchester United could now be ready to take advantage of the growing hostility between the two clubs as ESPN claim that the Red Devils are set to tempt Everton with a player-plus-cash swap deal involving Jonny Evans.

The report suggests that Martinez has held a long-standing interest in the Northern Irish international so Everton could very-well be tempted to do business with United if the money was right as they would be getting a ready-made replacement as part of the deal.

Evans has fallen out-of-favour under Louis van Gaal and the 27-year-old would most likely jump at the chance of a fresh start at a club where he’ll be guaranteed more regular first team football.

This news will come as a major blow to Chelsea as they appeared to be in pole position to sign Stones this summer, but with United able to offer Evans as part of the deal, the Manchester giants could arguably have put themselves in the driving seat.

Everton have clearly been riled by Chelsea’s attempts to sign Stones this summer while they have a much better relationship with United having done plenty of business with them in the past, so this is also something that could sway things in van Gaal’s favour.

We’ll have to wait and see whether United do end up tabling a formal swap deal offer but if they do it looks as though they and Chelsea will be going head-to-head over Stone’s signature during the closing stages of the window.

The 21-year-old has become one of the most highly-rated defenders in British football since joining Everton two years ago and I think he’d be an excellent signing for either club as he’s destined to develop into one of the best centre-backs in England.

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see where the youngster is playing come the start of September….
