Arsenal will make a late move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani as Arsene Wenger tries to strengthen his forward options before the window slams shut on Tuesday, according to the Daily Star.

The boss has been widely tipped to bring in another striker this summer but so far we’ve been frustrated in our attempts to land reported target Karim Benzema from Real Madrid.

It appears Wenger is now ready to widen his search for a new No.9 and the Daily Star claim the Gunners boss will launch a big-money bid for Edinson Cavani over the next 48 hours.

The newspaper doesn’t give any indication as to how much we’re prepared to pay for the Uruguayan international but you’d expect it would take an offer in excess of £40m to persuade PSG to even consider selling at this late stage of the summer.

Cavani only moved to Paris two years ago but has been forced to spent much of his time on the wing with Zlatan Ibrahimovic preferred through the middle and it’s led to speculation that the 28-year-old may be keen on a move away this summer.

It remains to be seen whether we’ll be able to strike a deal with the Ligue 1 champions but obviously Cavani would be an exciting addition if we were successful in luring him to the Emirates before Tuesday’s 6pm deadline.

Despite not always playing in a his preferred central role, the former Napoli hitman still managed to score 31 goals in 53 games last season to help PSG land the domestic treble so he’d certainly bring a much-needed goal threat to our squad.

I’d still personally prefer to see us sign Benzema as I think he’d be the perfect striker to lead our attack but it looks like that deal is growing increasingly unlikely and Cavani would be a more than adequate alternative.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the next couple of days but time is running out and I fear any talk of a title push will be over if we fail to bring in a top class forward before the window closes.
