Arsenal have missed out on the signing of Jamie Vardy after Leicester City confirmed that the striker has agreed terms over a new four-year contract extension.

Vardy’s future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks after the Mirror reported at the start of June that Arsenal had agreed to trigger the striker’s £20m buyout clause.

It looked as though the 29-year-old was heading for the Emirates after the Daily Mail then reported that Vardy had agreed personal terms over a three-year contract worth £120,000-a-week following talks with Arsene Wenger.

However, the striker flew-out to France with the England squad ahead of Euro 2016 having failed to complete his proposed move to Arsenal after Leicester made a late play to block the deal by offering the player a new and improved four-year contract to remain at the Kind Power.

Vardy has been mulling over his future while away with the England squad but it appears he’s now decided to snub Arsenal’s advances after Leicester released a statement on Lcfc.com confirming that the striker has agreed to sign a new four-year extension with the Foxes:

Leicester City have today (Thursday) agreed with the representatives of Jamie Vardy to extend the England international’s contract with the Premier League champions for a further four years.

Both parties hope that this announcement will end recent speculation regarding Jamie’s future and confirm his long term commitment to Leicester City Football Club.

Jamie will continue to focus all of his efforts on trying to achieve success with the England team at the European Championships in France.

There will be no further comment from either the Club or the player on this matter until the conclusion of the tournament.

Vardy caught Wenger’s attention after scoring 24 goals to help fire Leicester to the Premier League title last season but there has always been a concern that he wouldn’t suit our style of play.

The Foxes success was built on sitting back and hitting teams on the break which allowed Vardy to utilise his pace, but Arsenal are a possession-based side that usually has to try and break down teams who have 10-men behind the ball.

I was always concerned that he wouldn’t be as effective in this system and we saw glimpses of this during England’s recent draw with Slovakia when Vardy barely touched the ball as the Three Lions struggled to break down a stubborn defence.

Perhaps Arsene was looking to alter our style of play to get the best out of Vardy but it’s all irrelevant now as he’s staying at Leicester and the key is that the boss has a back-up plan in place as we desperately need to bring in another striker this summer.
