Chelsea Transfer News: Conte Makes Approach For £35m Spanish Defender

Chelsea have made an approach to Athletic Bilbao defender Oscar De Marcos to try and persuade the £35m-rated star to make a move to Stamford Bridge

The summer transfer window is closed for another year but it’s now time to look back on those deals that didn’t go through and those that are being lined-up for the future. Today, Chelsea are linked with Oscar De Marcos…

Chelsea have made an approach to Athletic Bilbao defender Oscar De Marcos to try and persuade the £35m-rated star to make a move to Stamford Bridge, according to the Daily Star.

De Marcos has been with Bilbao since joining from Alaves in 2009 and has been a key first team player for the La Liga outfit over the past seven years, making 288 appearances in all competitions for the club so far.

It appears the 27-year-old has attracted interest from Chelsea as the Daily Star are citing reports coming from Spain that claim Antonio Conte made contact with the right-back 10 days ago to discuss a potential move to west London.

The newspaper suggests that Conte made it clear he’s willing to hand De Marcos a lucrative four-year deal worth double his existing salary if he was to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

However, it’s not going to be easy for Chelsea to sign the Spanish under-23 international as the Daily Star say his contract still has three years left to run so Bilbao are under no immediate pressure to sell while his buyout clause is set at a hefty £35m.

Even if the Blues could agree a fee with the Spaniard’s, they may have their work cut out persuading De Marcos to leave as he has previously indicated he has no interest in leaving Bilbao any time soon.

De Marcos is previously quoted by the Daily Star as saying:

“It’s impossible. I would not go,”

“The more times you say, it seems to lose credibility – but people who know me know that.”

Conte splashed out big money on signing left-back Marcos Alonso and centre-back David Luiz on deadline day but with Branislav Ivanovic enduring a difficult start to the season, it’s no surprise to hear that Chelsea are looking for a new right-back.

De Marcos would be an excellent addition if they could manage to lure him to London but it looks as though any potential deal is still a long way from completion and the Blues have several hurdles to overcome if they want to land the Spaniard.
