Chelsea Ready To Meet £36m Buyout Clause As Conte Plots 5th Summer Signing

Chelsea are prepared to meet a £36m buyout clause in Sergi Roberto’s Barcelona contract as Antonio Conte closes-in on his fifth major signing of the summer

Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea are linked with Sergi Roberto…

Chelsea are prepared to meet a £36m buyout clause in Sergi Roberto’s Barcelona contract as Antonio Conte closes-in on his fifth major signing of the summer, according to Calciomercato.

Conte has already been extremely busy in the transfer market having snapped-up goalkeeper Willy Caballero, centre-back Antonio Rudiger, midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and striker Alvaro Morata.

However, the Blues boss is still looking to further strengthen his squad as he knows he needs reinforcements if they are to compete on all fronts next season ahead of Chelsea’s return to the Champions League.

A new defender to compete with Victor Moses in the right wing-back role is required and Roberto has now emerged as a serious target for the Premier League champions.

Calciomercato are citing a Spanish journalist Jose Luis Carazo who claims Chelsea have set their sights on signing Roberto after he was made available for transfer this summer.

The 25-year-old has been with Barcelona his entire career having progressed through their famous La Masia youth academy and he’s racked up over 150 appearances for the first team.

However, his future at the Nou Camp is now in serious doubt following the arrival of Nelson Semedo from Benfica and it seems the Catalans are now ready to cash-in on the Spanish international.

Calciomercato claim Chelsea are prepared to trigger a £36m buyout clause that’s written in to Roberto’s contract so Conte must be serious about luring the player to Stamford Bridge.

Roberto has been deployed at right-back in recent years but he’s also more than comfortable playing in central midfield so his versatility is sure to have appealed to Chelsea.

We’ll have to wait and see whether the Blues do end up formalising their interest and meeting his clause but I think Roberto would be an excellent signing if the west Londoners prise him away from Barca this summer.
